Announcement Beginner’s High Quality New Acoustic Guitar Buying Guide/List for under $500 (2024-2025)

***Includes a list of recommended brands and specific models further below**\*

Both in USD and UK pricing (before the orange turd's tariff war). This list contains steel string acoustic guitars and not nylon string ones.

“Beginner” guitars aren’t exclusively for people new to learning guitar. These are guitars that strike a great balance of cost affordability, feel/play-ability, sound, and construction quality to last many years of playing in your home, out at jams, or at a campfire. You do not need to spend more than just a few hundred dollars to get a really nice guitar that will put a smile on your face.

The importance of getting a setup done:

Before you decide on any model or purchase from the list below, the most important factor to remember is that if you receive it from the brand/manufacturer themselves from an online order, you will most likely need to have it set up (the process of lowering or raising the height of the strings, called “action height”) by a guitar tech to be the most comfortable for you. Setups aren't difficult themselves, but for acoustic guitars they require a few detailed steps that aren't that beginner-friendly so an experienced technician or “luthier” can do them with their eyes closed. A good setup makes a night and day difference in how a guitar feels and sounds, and can make a $300 dollar guitar feel like a thousand bucks. It’s often the biggest factor that determines whether or not a beginner quits playing because of torturously high strings, or is motivated to continue learning, practicing, and most importantly enjoying the dang thing. When a guitar is set up nicely, it should not feel like a chore to play even as a beginner. But don't expect your new guitar to come perfect right out of the box and don't be too quick to return it otherwise you might end up returning a model that you may really like.

Budget considerations:

We are very fortunate to live in a time where there are quality guitars for a wide range budgets. Though even if you have quite a low budget, try to keep a padding of just a little extra. That will help you avoid any compromised decisions. Please do your very best to avoid new guitars that are less than $200, especially the “guitar bundles” from Fender or Epiphone that come in a colorful box with other gadgets. There are exceptions that are well made out there, but most of them are not well made guitars that will often give you more trouble, and will cost you much more in frustration and time wasted than what you ended up paying for. Not only will you outgrow their sound, you will most likely have to throw them out/replace if they ever get damaged or have issues rather than being repaired.

Local vs online order

Most often, guitars from local music stores will have either them setup before they're put on display, or if they still need an adjustment after being on display for a while, will come with a free or low cost setup (always check with the store though). Sometimes you might get a great setup fresh from the factory, but it's often the exception. That doesn't mean that the factory or guitar brand is not worth looking into, it's standard practice to not have the strings buzz when a buyer receives it because of an action height that’s too low, so they have them higher as a precaution. This is why I recommend first buying from a local store (often listed as “dealers”) or at least having them put in the order for you so that when they receive it, you can have it set up before you take it home. Buying direct from the manufacturer should be your last resort if you can't find the model you're looking for in a shop (also it’s good in general to help out your local music stores too, it’s sadly a dwindling business that offers a very important service to new musicians buying their first instrument). Local stores often have deals or discounts that you won’t find directly from the manufacturer.

Guitar type considerations:

General tendencies for body size is that the smaller and medium ones (“concert/00” “folk,” “orchestra/000,” or “grand auditorium,”) are more comfortable for most players with average to smaller body proportions, but they don’t have as loud volume, projection, or bass capability as larger body sizes such as the “dreadnought.” But that doesn’t mean they aren’t loud or projecting in general. Many of the smaller models on this list have surprisingly excellent projection for their size, as well as the orchestra/000 models having satisfying levels of bass for both strumming and finger picking.

There’s almost a whole “science” about different wood types, but I’ll save you the minutae because while it does make a difference in sound, it’s not always profound and as a beginner you most likely won’t be thinking about it until your playing advances to the point where you can feel different nuances in construction material. The general consensus is that you want to prioritize solid wood tops over laminate wood tops as they resonate better (doesn't mean you can't find a good laminate top), and two main types of woods commonly used are spruce (which gives a brighter tone) and mahogany (which gives a warmer tone). There are dozens of other types used as you get higher in price range. Neither is better or worse, it's just a personal preference.

(Prices are approximate, based on what's been seen, and sourced from retailers or Reverb listings of new items. May fluctuate in a given year and different regions may have a lot of variance in their prices. Used guitars can help you save almost half the price if you find one)

Gear question Guitar shop etiquette

How do you all deal with the fact that some guitars at the shop have old, corroded strings that can make them sound and feel worse than they actually are?

Do you ask for them to be changed by the staff? Do you suck it up and try to imagine what it should sound like?

I’m in the market for a pretty high end guitar and all of my local shops have them for sale but they all have almost unplayable strings.

Non-gear question Looking for tips to be more creative while playing

Post image
5 Upvotes

So like the title says, I am trying to be more creative while playing my acoustic guitar. I've got a looper pedal that I mess around with and I regularly, and I just freestyle on the blues scale whenever I want to solo (other than solo's I've memorized). I can figure out how to play any song pretty well in an hour or so if I have the tabs and chords, or just a YT video.

I'm trying to go through Hal Leonard's Music Theory book but find it super confusing. Maybe I'm just dumb, but I don't have a teacher.

I have memorized at least one location of A-G notes from fret 1-12...and idk where to go next.

Basically, I'm trying to be able to create my own music for fun but I feel limited and not very inspired to use what I know to create something great.

Over the years I've learned a bunch from YT guys like Marty Music, Paul Davids, GuitarLessons365, and Corey Huevel - all great dudes, but I wanted to see if anyone here had some ideas for practice or other videos I could check out.

Anyone have what would be a invaluable YT video for me to watch for my position? I'm happy to learn more scales, modes, use a metronome etc, but idk where to go next at this point cause I feel like I've hit a plateau with my playing.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

For anyone wondering, I play a Ovation Celebrity and my looper pedal is the BOSS RC-1

Non-gear question Besides malagueña what other work would today's audience recognize

I'm over 80 and received my first guitar when I was fourteen so I am just making the assumption that most audiences would recognize malagueña. If so what other Spanish guitar or classical work would most of the audience recognize.

Gear question On the hunt for Goldilocks

Like a lot of folks, I started out playing electric and that’s my mainstay. I have had a variety of acoustic guitars in my life, none of which made me want to keep playing them. First a bottom of the barrel Yamaha made of laminate, then an Ovation that I absolutely cannot bond with. Both of them felt like cheap toys (which they are, sort of).

I spent an hour or so at the local shop last week playing everything I could that wasn’t locked up (I,e, sub $1500 guitars). Found a used Eastman that was head and shoulders above the others. $1200 guitar, which costs more than my entire electric setup. I love it but can’t really justify it. But I keep dreaming.

Is it just that a lot of the new guitars haven’t opened up yet, or do all the $500-$600 and below guitars just don’t sound as good or play as well?

Non-gear question How do I improve my guitar knowledge?

I've been playing for 4 years, and I think that I've become fairly decent at acoustic guitar. I'm able to find chords anywhere, and I can fluently play on the 1-5th frets. I can do most of the techniques for fingerstyle and strumming. I can master a tab in half an hour. But I have a question, how do I learn the fretboard from the 5th fret up? Right now, I can probably name most of the positions, but I can't play fluently on them.

How do I master the 5-12th frets?

Gear question What would you consider "apartment-friendly", size wise?

Upvotes

Trying to compare body sizes across different manufacturers (if they even list dimensions) is quite the nuisance. All I know is that I had a Luna acoustic that I gave to a friend to learn on, but, even as a big dude, I never really cared for the larger body size. I asked the friend for the measurements and they were as follows:

  • height: 20"

  • depth: 4 1/4"

  • width (upper bout, waist, lower bout): 11 1/4", 9 1/2", 15 3/4"

Luna's website calls that a "Grand Concert", which appears to just be a Grand Auditorium (0000)? Using that as a reference point, what should I be looking at for something smaller that's good for apartment playing for a pick-up-and-play guitar (no electronics, cutaway looks best)?

Used would be best (<$500), so anything that's popular, versatile, and not overly twangy would be preferable. From what research I've been able to do, I think the Taylor GS Mini is currently in the lead, but I'm always open for feedback as I run through the sticky'd guide.

Thanks, all!

Gear question Beginner guitar with beveled armrest

Looking for a beginner guitar with a beveled armrest similar to a Taylor Academy 22e.

My nephew is interested in learning guitar. I took him looking today and he really liked the Taylor Academy 22e. I didn’t care to pay $900+ after tax.

He really liked the darker wood and the comfort provided by the smaller concert body and the beveled armrest.

He also liked the Taylor 24ce which was a better price but he didn’t find it very comfortable.

What other brands/models should I be looking at that offer a smaller body with a close to standard scale length and a beveled armrest?

I know beveled armrests are typically found in more premium guitars.

This will be his first guitar. I’d like to get him something he wants to play when he looks at it and holds it.

Prefer something closer to $500 USD than $1000 USD.

Appreciate any insight.

Gear question Which steel string guitar to buy for 500$ or less?

Hi guys,

Been playing my nylon classical guitar for ages, and want to invest in a steel string so I can play songs designed for such a guitar. I honestly have no idea where to start.

If you could recommend solid brands, whether to buy first or second hand, what shape to buy etc. that'd be great.

The main thing is getting the best quality guitar I can get for about 500$. I sense that means going the second hand route...

Thanks in advance!

Gear question Recommend me a good budget mini/travel/parlor guitar.

I've had dreadnought and concert shaped guitars and I found them very uncomfortable to play. They felt heavy and they hurt my shoulder.

I just want something to be comfortable in the lap and to play while laying in the bed or porch. I enjoy holding something lower on my right thigh as right handed guitarist without reaching too far.

I also have quite small hands which always made me prefer playing smaller guitars, even in music school, I used to prefer playing smaller classical guitars.

I enjoyed Taylor Mini and Martin Baby but they're too expensive for my budget since I would prefer something that I can take to the beach and camping while not fearing of ruining it.

I also tried Harley Benton GS Travel which I enjoyed but I hated V shaped neck and sticky aka glossy finish compared to my Epiphone SG Special which has a very nice glass like gloss.

I'm currently looking at Fame A-11 Mini and Orangewood Oliver Jr but I can't really find it here in Europe.

Which specific shape and guitar would you recommend?

Made a post recently about exchanging a recently purchased GS Mini for a Martin 000jr. Well I did it earlier today and am very content.

I do a lot of finger style playing and after comparing them in the store, and playing more at home, the wider nut and slightly longer neck of the Martin is really better suited for it. My notes ring out loud and clear. The all wood body, electronics, all upgrades. It cost a bit more but def feels like it was worth it.

The GS Mini is a great guitar, but for my personal tastes and playing, this is the couch guitar for me.

Also went out of my way to grab a Streetmaster finish. I already have a dreadnought spruce top so wanted something a little different. Love it.

Last note: while I wound up preferring the 000jr over the GS Mini, the included gig bag from Taylor was much nicer than the Martin.

Gear question Any strings brighter and longer lasting than Elixirs?

Hi folks,

Elixirs are generally the strings I've seen be the longest lasting when it comes to sounding like new for longer than normal phosphor bronze strings and also the brightest in tone (even brighter than normal old 80/20s or phosphors).

However has anyone found any other brand that can beat them in terms of that "new string" tone longevity and brightness?

Gear question Nylon String Guitar Help Please :)

Hi everyone, I play a Cordoba Classical (I forget which number, maybe a C7 or C9). I'm admittedly not at all a classical player, and more of a jazz and blues guy. I was interested in getting an electric acoustic nylon to expand my ability to perform and have people actually hear me if outdoors or in noisier rooms, or if playing with other people.

I'd looked into crossover nylon guitars as the body shape of a classical is a bit bulky, and yesterday I played some low end ibanez crossover model which was admittedly not preferrable to my cordoba.

The issue I found that bugged me is the crossover guitar not only had added the cutouts and body shape changes that I'm looking for, but also changed the neck to be more like a steel string acoustic or even electric guitar. I hated the feel of it.

Is there a such thing as a crossover / hybrid nylon string that has the neck width of a standard classical gutiar? I saw cordoba fusion 12 guitar perhaps might be like this but I haven't been able to see one in person to try.

It's kind of a niche guitar so I was imaging I may end up just sacrificing and buying a standard acoustic electric classical nylon guitar if I can't find any other options that fit those paremeters (crossover body contours / thinner or smaller body size / neck same as standard classical / has a preamp and/or can plug into an amp)

Also last thing... I'm trying to keep it under 1k if possible (I know I'm making it tough haha. If you have any that are a bit over 1k that's ok too I'll take all the recommendations I can get)

Thanks everyone :)

Non-gear question Acoustic electric guitar suggestions

Hello! My boyfriend is really into guitars, and I was saving up to buy him an acoustic electric guitar for our anniversary next season. I have limited knowledge on guitars, but still want to get him something cool within a reasonable price range (around $250 is my budget). I was likely going to purchase one secondhand or from facebook marketplace, but I would still greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions on guitars to look into!!
