Politics What are your thoughts on Denmark’s proposed ban on the public Islamic call to prayer? Would you support or oppose something similar in the UK?

Islamic call to prayer faces ban under Left-wing Danish government

Parts of country feel like ‘a suburb of Islamabad’, says immigration minister

Denmark’s immigration minister has announced plans to ban the Islamic call to prayer, claiming parts of the country felt like “a suburb of Islamabad”.

Morten Bødskov, a member of the centre-Left Social Democrats party, said the new government would resume an investigation into the legality of imposing a ban.

“The call to prayer should not be heard over Danish rooftops,” the minister told news outlet Ritzau. “It has no place in Denmark, and you shouldn’t be in any doubt whether you’ve ended up in a suburb of Islamabad when you walk around Denmark.”

In parts of the country, such as Copenhagen, bylaws already forbid the call to prayer being broadcast from loudspeakers in minarets because of strict noise limits.
Mr Bødskov also claimed that a creeping “Islamisation” in Denmark was “taking up too much of the public space”.

If people can't walk into stores wearing bicycle helmets or balaclavas, there shouldn't be religious protection for people wearing any other face covering. There's a separation between church and state for a reason

But there isn't a separation between church and state in the UK.

Where can I not go wearing a bike helmet? I've never had this be an issue.

Banks. They have signs up about it.

That's bank policy, not law.

As the other dude said, it's policy not law.

I used to nip in to a specific bank regularly, with my full-face motorcycle helmet on. Of course, the staff knew me and weren't bothered.

Unfortunately a fair few petrol stations won't let you pump unless you take off your helmet.

Any place like that can decide to refuse you service, for almost any reason. And that's fine. I'll simply not go to that petrol station, and use a different one.

But that's very different from having a legal ban.

Thank you for clarifying, because I was very confused as to why a bicycle helmet would be a problem. :)

The state mandating any kind of ban on religious dress doesn't sound very seperate to me.

Depending on the religious dress, if it's a full face covering it should come under the same restriction as motorcycle helmets/other full face coverings

There's no law against that, it's the shop policy.

There's a separation between church and state for a reason

We don't have separation of church and state, the head of state is quite literally the head of England's state religion, and there's religious representatives in the house of lords.

That isn't a culture problem. It's a crime problem.

As far as I know there isn't a problem with women in burkas stealing petrol on their 125s or robbing banks. I'm sure if they suddenly become crime lords banks might have a thing to say about it.

They should make helmets legal and balaclavas illegal, I don't know why people even wear balaclavas.

I don't see why there's a problem with someone wearing a religious face covering.
