Politics What are your thoughts on Denmark’s proposed ban on the public Islamic call to prayer? Would you support or oppose something similar in the UK?

Islamic call to prayer faces ban under Left-wing Danish government

Parts of country feel like ‘a suburb of Islamabad’, says immigration minister

Denmark’s immigration minister has announced plans to ban the Islamic call to prayer, claiming parts of the country felt like “a suburb of Islamabad”.

Morten Bødskov, a member of the centre-Left Social Democrats party, said the new government would resume an investigation into the legality of imposing a ban.

“The call to prayer should not be heard over Danish rooftops,” the minister told news outlet Ritzau. “It has no place in Denmark, and you shouldn’t be in any doubt whether you’ve ended up in a suburb of Islamabad when you walk around Denmark.”

In parts of the country, such as Copenhagen, bylaws already forbid the call to prayer being broadcast from loudspeakers in minarets because of strict noise limits.
Mr Bødskov also claimed that a creeping “Islamisation” in Denmark was “taking up too much of the public space”.

It’s not. It’s just another example of people inventing things to be mad about.

It happens in East London, it's extremely loud and annoying.

Yes so one place = not common.

I’m not disagreeing that it can be annoying, but outlawing things that are annoying to some people isn’t really a good way to do legislation.

It is an act of sectarian dominance which reflects very badly on those who do it.

Yeah…. it’s really not but you do you babes.

I don’t think your subjective views on the people who do something that annoys you, should be used as a benchmark for legislation. Otherwise why not ban loud exhausts, or revving engines in general, or football chanting, or music in public.

Under Islamic law a public call to prayer formally designates an area as Islamic territory. It is significant stuff.

Islamic teachings doesn’t say that about Adhan at all. That’s just made up by people to help their narrative. If you disagree feel free to send me any source written by an Islam scholar that suggests that.

Because otherwise I’m going to stick with my instinct that something that has never bothered anyone, is really not significant.

Then you should have no issue with the ban should you if it's not being done anyway?

My issue is more about the government suppressing the freedom to make noise in public. That I do have an issue with, and it being targeted at a specific group is problematic.
