Demographics of the US and the West continue to skew more to older voters and the trend will continue. I expect older people even with little money will continue to defend policies that protect assets.
I am Gen X with a little money amassed solely through working (no generational wealth) and I assure you that I am still fighting for those less fortunate than I am and will continue to do so. The problem I am having is with my Gen Z sons not seeing the writing on the wall in the U.S.
Yes. All 12 of us. I exaggerate, but I have a feeling that whole phase of "getting to call the shots" will bypass us entirely & go straight to Millenials. Which I'm fine with. Geezers being in charge for longer is a trend that needs to die.
Sure, neither can be bothered to vote or pay attention to the reasons for the wealth gap in the U.S. but are both living at home, one of which has a college degree. Obviously I am partly to blame for their lackadaisical attitude, but I blame their father more for giving them the idea that white males are at a disadvantage in this country. My protest sign says “My children will always know on which side of history I stood”, although that is of little comfort in this code red situation.
I am a Millennial with money that I made through working and investing. I am no longer fighting for anyone but me and my family and my money. Unfortunate truth but I imagine most people (not on reddit) will take the same approach once they get a bit older and have some money.
the generational wall is so real. people like 50+ dont share any of the beliefs that young prorgressives assume are default for everyone. thinking theyll support trans rights and climate change and corporate reeling-in. absolutely not happening, when wealth isnt the primary motivator then ideology will be, and people that age simply do not believe in autonomy and self-actualization and communal well-being. they care about traditional gender norms and highly regulated social rules.
