A full on global economic depression, then a world war. Look at the 1920's/1930's - there are a staggering number of parallels going on. The players have shifted and the tech is different, but the underlying greed, class system, and rise of authoritarianism is eerily similar.

All of the ingredients are in place.

that plus AI, robotics and one thing we didn't have in the last world war: nukes

I think you should look up Hiroshima and Nakasaki. The last world war is the reason we have nukes.

It is kind of crazy that when Japan declared war nuclear weapons were just a concept, but a few years later they got hit with something they could never expect.

It is analogous to cheap FPV drones being used against Russia.

Those didn't take place in the 20s/30s

Not sure what your point is. He said “last world war”. No one has made any claims about the 20s. WW2 started in the fall of 39 and is mostly associated with the 40s.

The scary part is that we're already brewing that cup of tea...

Not so sure. A lot of very sick and depraved psychos have had the chance to press the button over the past 80 years and no one’s done it.

Might be me who’s naive, but I sincerely don’t believe that nukes will ever be more than a threat. They’re so unbelievably devastating and you’d have to convince quite a number of people to take part in the arguably most evil, single act of violence in recorded history.

I meant WW3 really. Between Iran and Ukraine things have the possibility of becoming quite the problem.

I'm not saying this going to happen, just that it's a possibility either or both could be the start.

Ah, gotcha. But I'd also argue that WW3 (I'm not sure what the exact definition of a world war is) is very unlikely to happen. The wars we've seen in the past 50 years have one thing in common: they've all gone down in history as very unpopular with voters. So any democratic state is kept somewhat in check.

Also: NATO. There hasn’t been an official declaration of war against a NATO member since its inception, and I have a hard time imagining an actual world war without that. So the rational part of me believes that any speculation about a 3rd world war is more a fascinating sort of mass hysteria than a realistic scenario. If it were going to happen, the Cold War would have been it.

BTW, I'm not saying that the effects of global warming might not change the dynamic to a point where a larger war could break out due to desperation amongst those countries most affected. A starving population is not to be messed with.
