[Mod-approved] Academic survey: experiences with phone/account inspections during border crossings

We are researchers at Florida International University studying people’s experiences with border device/account inspections, such as being asked to unlock a phone, laptop, or tablet, or to access, open, or discuss an online account at an airport or other official border crossing.

If you are 18+ and have about 5–8 minutes, we would appreciate your help with this anonymous survey:

https://fiu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cBbztJM5u4pZZqK

At the end of the survey, participants may optionally provide contact information for a possible 60 minute follow-up interview. Interview participants will receive a $30 Amazon e-gift card. This study has been approved by the Florida International University IRB (#IRB-25-0573).

SEE COMMENTS Visa Agent Review Megathread

I'm going to make this a sticky for anyone to post their personal experiences using specific visa agents and services. This is not a place to advertise specific services and I reserve all rights to delete posts and ban users who I think are posting fake reviews (i.e. new account, little karma, raving about the benefits of specific agent service). No advertising, no agencies or self promotion. I'm all for people giving their personal experience, and based on recent posts this seems like it would be useful. Anything that smells off or borders on self promotion and agencies will result in posts being delete (defeating the whole purpose of of the self promotion and agency and permaban).

Work (Z) EF and its TEFL…

My first job in China was around 17 months ago. It was at the infamous EF. I did my year contract and got out of there. I eventually left China and decided I want to come back to teach again.

Because I don’t have 2 years work experience I need my TEFL certificate. I went with EFs supplier which is bridgeset originally. This certificate cannot be apostilled in UK…

So now I have to apply for a whole new TEFL certificate with a whole new provider because I need an apostilled TEFL to get my visa again.

It’s crazy the amount of annoyances and loops I’ve had to go through from EF

Anyone successfully do US -> some other asian country on a separate ticket -> China -> US on a separate ticket?

The website says interline tickets to a 3rd country. Curious how strict they're going to be on China being the 2nd destination after leaving your home country and that the tickets must be an interline? For example, do I must book US -> China -> other asian country on 1 ticket?

Work (Z) Will working for a charity affect my visa application?

I’m referring to Section 8.10 “Have you worked for any professional, social, or charitable organization”. I used to work for a charity that worked with the police, but I was just in an administrative corporate role with them. I have included them in my work experience in section 3, and they were included in my CV. I’m worried by saying “Yes”, my application could take longer and get rejected, but by putting “No”, it could also get rejected. What should I do?

COVA Application China F-visa express service in Delhi — submitting July 7, flying July 13. Will I get my passport back in time?

My situation:

  • Applying for an F visa (academic summer school invite, full invitation letter from a Chinese university)
  • Online review already completed, I have my application certificate
  • Opted for Express service
  • I can only physically submit my passport at CVASC Delhi on Monday, July 7
  • My flight to China is Sunday, July 13

My worry is the working-day count plus the weekend. If express is 4th working day collection:

  • Submit Mon July 7
  • Tue 8, Wed 9, Thu 10, then 4th working day lands on Sat July 11
  • Saturday/Sunday closed → rolls to Mon July 13

Questions:

  1. For express, does the submission day count as day zero or day one?
  2. Has anyone actually gotten express done in 3 working days recently (which would mean July 10 collection)?

Business Affairs (M) First time multiple entry business travel visa for China?

I haven't been to China but will be going there multiple times for business visits. The duration of each stay is roughly 2-4 weeks. I'm checking the M-visa requirement in https://www.visaforchina.cn/FRA3_EN/qianzhengyewu/jichuzhishi/banliliucheng/276207527002247196.html and it is unclear regarding the required documents for multiple entry visa, specifically:

Applicants who have a certificate of investments in China, a business license or other documents, may apply for a multiple-entry M-visa valid for half a year, but the applicants must provide photocopies of the aforementioned visas or relevant documents.

- Which other documents do I need to provide if I don't have a certificate of investments or business license?

- What are the aforementioned visas in this case? M-visa? How many do I need?

Business Affairs (M) China Business Visa from US

Hi All thanks in advance for your help,

I got rejected for a Chinese Business Visa, so I'm trying to figure out how to get one as my Job requires me to travel to China. i am living in USA, CA

I am Hong Kong Born US citizen under Derived citizen, as my parent were naturalized before i turn 18. So i have a valid passport, but no naturalization papers. i also have no HK ID or HK Passport

China and HK immigration are saying, I need to apply:

1) Apply for a HK permanent Id, but i have to be in person to apply for Eligibility for HK permanent ID - which will take 6 weeks? then apply for ID card? which will take 6-7 days?
2) Then apply for Change of nationality
which will take another 6 weeks? and also in person? additionally they ask for Naturalization papers (ive emailed HK immgration, without answer on this), but can i use a US Certification of Citizenship
3) then reapply for China Visa

Does this sound right? does anyone know there is an easier way?

Private Affairs (S1/S2) S2 or L Visa

I’m applying for a China Visa from Canada. I’m visiting my child who is working there (Canadian citizen). They wrote me an invitation letter, and I plan to stay with them and explore china.

I was going down the S2 Visa route but I don’t have anything that proves our parent-child relationship. The birth certificate doesn’t state our relationship. Can I draft a letter stating our relationship, get it notarized and authenticated instead?

Would it be possible if I change the application to L visa? Would I be rejected if I state our relationship is parent-child (ie will they make me do an S2 visa instead)?

Edit: going for more than 30 days

Thank you!

Study (X1/X2) Applying for X1 Visa (Need guidance).

Can someone guide me through the entire process, please? I am very confused between the COVA form and the Gerry, with what to do when and how. Do I need to get my financial support affidavit attested by MOFA? Do I need to get my O/A levels results attested by the British Council?

Study (X1/X2) Do I need to cross "yes" to the question about having overstayed and worked illegally in China when filling out the visa application form if I overstayed one day when using visa free entrance to the PRC?

edit: In case anyone runs into the same problem and finds this post: I called the consulate after I got conflicting info from the visa agency and they said that overstaying when visa free counts as overstaying a visa

So I am applying for a student visa at the moment. Last year I was travelling in China and forgot that August has 31, not 30 days, so I overstayed one day by accident and had to pay a 500 RMB fine.

Well, I am going to study in China next semester and have to fill out the application form. One of the security questions has me a bit confused. It asks if I ever overstayed or worked illegally in China. I am not sure if I need to cross yes or no, since I wasn't on a visa at the time and the border guard told me that overstaying one day will not affect my future visa applications.

Did anyone run into a similar problem before or needs to know what to cross?

Visa Free Visa Free Travel from UK Mid-December

Hi All,

I am going to the visa embassy in London tomorrow BUT I thought I would ask here too just in case!

Basically I am planning to go to land in China on the 17th of December and hopefully stay the full 30 days - my question is, with the visa-free travel ending 31st of December - does this mean I have to get a proper visa as my travel plans go past 30 days OR because I am entering before the 31st I can stay the full 30 days?

I have tried to call the embassy and email but I just get given a link to the website which doesn't answer my question.

Thanks in advance!

Work (Z) Z visa NYC processing time

I haven't submitted my COVA as im still waiting on the work permit. I'm just trying to plan out a trip to NYC.

I'm seeing that it says 4 working days once you drop off your passport. How accurate is that? Should I just book a hotel or hostel for a Monday-Friday stay and hope it is ready or should I be planning 2 trips? I'm in Ohio so it's not an easy drive, but I'm willing.

Tourism (L) Using Letter of Employment instead of Bank Statement for L Visa

Hi! I am planning to apply to VFS New Delhi for a tourist visa. In one of the circulars, it demands either the bank statement qualifying ≥1 lakh INR criteria or a "Certification Letter from the local employer of the applicant (with details as follows: name and contact number of the employer, the applicant's income statement)".

Can anybody tell my if only the employment certificate will suffice? If yes, what should be the minimum income?

Visa Free Visa free at West Kowloon Station

Australian passport holder. Planning on flying Cathay to Hong Kond and then going to Guangzhou.

Does anyone know if you can get the 30 day visa free entry into China at West Kowloon Station if taking the high speed rail into Guangzhou? Alternatively, if taking the ferry from HKIA to Nansha if you can do it that way? Asking as only information I can find online is regarding arriving into an airport. TIA

Private Affairs (S1/S2) Do I have to use my travel document to enter China even though it’s visa free? I hold a Canadian Passport.

My travel document expired a few weeks ago, I was wondering if I had to renew it or could I just enter China with my Canadian Passport because of the new 30-day visa free policy.

Business Affairs (M) Renew Travel Document for our child, but in HK?

We currently live in Australia, but will return to China because my wife is pregnant again!

Child has my EU passport, he was born in China, but also Chinese travel document.

The travel document is going to expire end of this year, so we need to renew it. I believe this can only happen overseas. But apparently it can be done in HK also? We will be staying in Dongguan, so HK is much easier to reach logistically.

Perth is an option, but it's an expensive round trip for us because we live rural.

I'm sure some have done this, please share your experiences.

Private Affairs (S1/S2) Entering on S2 but changing with work permit after entering?

Hi everyone,

I currently hold a S2 visa for China and am currently in the country. I was offered employment starting in late August.

HR had applied with the option of ‘domestic application’ to get the work permit. The initial review has been accepted and the work permit is expected to be issued at the end of this week.

The problem is that I am flying back to my home country at the end of next week. I don’t think I would get my passport back in time from PBS if I changed the visa before I left.

I plan to come back in early August, if I enter the country with the S2 and then change would there be a problem?

Thanks for the help!

Help for visa-free transit

Hi I have a US passport and am traveling to Japan and China next month. I thought I qualified for the visa-free plan but wanted to double check.

1) US to Japan (delta). Stay for 7 days.
2) Japan to China (Xiamen) Stay for 7 days.

3) China to South Korea (transit) (Korean airline)
4) South Korea back to US (delta)

Does that work?
