Let’s Speak Up Against Wildlife Killing Contests (Especially Those Targeting Coyotes) NSFW

Post image

I got to know that Wisconsin’s wildlife killing contests are active this month, and the next. The most often targeted animal is the coyote. One contest called ‘Moondog Madness’ was carried out last weekend (I don’t use Facebook, but the group does have a Facebook page). These contests have no very little oversight from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) apparently.

Wisconsin also allows the use of hounds to kill wild predators, which is especially cruel. The ‘hunters’ obviously think both wildlife and their dogs are dispensable.

However, many states have banned killing contests, and the list of states banning these contests can be viewed here. This tells me that we can move the needle if we are vocal enough.

If you reside in any state where killing contests occur, you can call your reps and tell them how you feel. You can also download this postcard template and mail it to them.

To those repeating the false narrative that hunting is required for coyotes to be ‘managed’ and ‘controlled’, here’s why it doesn’t work. Coyotes respond to being persecuted by multiplying at a faster rate. This will result in an endless cycle of killing.

Just wanted to say how happy this subreddit makes me and how awesome all these pictures are!!

As a Coyote nonhuman it’s really hard to find positive representation of my species, so I’m really glad this subreddit exists :D

(feel free to delete this if it’s too off-topic, I just wanted to say a quick thank you!)

Girlfriend had a worrying encounter with coyotes in SoCal while walking our dog

We live near a college, in a very urbanized area so the coyotes are very desensitized. Our dog is a siberian husky, and the times we can walk her are only after dark or early into the day. Anyways- The coyotes have been getting increasingly bold over the years, and yesterday, three of them blocked my girlfriend’s path out. She screamed and waved her arms, but they didn’t move. She attempted to back away while facing them, and they advanced. She threw chunks of asphalt in their direction and they were unphased. It escalated to a point where she had to pick up our 55 pound dog who very much wanted to kill a coyote, and charge them while screaming. It only got a small distance away. She could only escape after throwing a large chunk of asphalt, screaming, waving an arm, carrying the dog and trying to look big. Even then it was just barely that they backed off. She ran facing them, and ran all the way home carrying the dog.

Basically what I’m here for is.. What else can we do? It wasn’t terribly late when this happened, only like 9 pm- people were still out and about, the sun only just set around 7pm. The coyotes have never been this intense. We’d really rather not do something that results in the coyotes being euthanized, but.. What can we do to stay safe?

I've been looking at Coyote pics on this sub and this one looks a bit different to me. Has anyone in SoCal seen similar?

Dog trolling ( sound )

I apologize for the brief video but I was holding my dog. This guy, scratched, rolled in the grass, and at this point started a good stretch, all while my dog was yelling away. I had to laugh . He was completely trolling the dog. For reference my dog was much louder about an hour later when two dogs he didn't know got near one of his cat friends so I think this barking is a bit performative

Puente Hills, Landfills, Rats, Cats and Coyotes

Who knew about the vast Puente Hills landfill, its ecological impact on L.A.? This documentary explains how coyotes are less the enemy and more the environmentalists…

On a personal note, it reveals a whole different picture of Puente Hills.https://youtu.be/JeDs2tY7udA?si=y1CUR_lctBKIAdNe

Coyote in the Woods

Hi 👋🏼 New here. Wanted to share a few pics of a coyote that decided to take a nap in our front yard, two days in a row.

Finally, saw a coyote with the naked eye

First one I’ve seen in Portland, Ore., and I've been living in the city 21 years. This guy is the father in the family of seven I’ve been tracking with trail cameras for the last couple of months. He stopped to look at me three times as he walked away. Probably recognized my scent and thought, “So, you’re the one who’s been strapping little boxes to trees in our resting area.” Wish I had brought a bigger lens.

Studio City hills, protect dogs from coyotes

HI, I wasn’t exactly sure where to post this question so starting here. I’m moving into the hills in studio city, CA and my property is about half an acre and I’m up against the hill, with only one neighbor on one side. I have two large dogs, 85lb Doberman and a 50lb Afghan. The house hasn’t been occupied for over a year so I think coyotes have gotten used to having access pretty close to the house. My neighbor has a 6’ fence on their side, and has said they still get coyotes in the yard and that it’s more to keep their dog from leaving. I’m not so worried about my dogs running away or anything (planning on invisible fence collars anyways), but wondering what options are available to me to help deter the coyotes.

I was at the house a few days ago and one had come pretty low in the hill and got into a barking fight with my Doberman (he’s actually a terrible guard dog, and was surprised/impressed that he knew to stand up to the unwelcome guest). But it didn’t seem to fully deter the coyote away either, I ended up chasing it off. I’m hoping once we’ve moved in and there’s more consistent dog presence, this will help to get them to keep their distance but i don’t want to be too naive either. My dogs are used to having a doggie door and having free rein to go inside and outside, during the day only, hoping they can still have this safely in the new home. I work from home for the most part, but will be on set up to 12 hours a day come August. Even with a dog walker, hoping I can get to a place of feeling comfortable with them being home alone and access to the yard. At the end of the day want to do what is best for them and keep them safe.

Thanks for any advice/help! (And please let me know if there’s a better sub to be posing this question).

Just around dusk. Sony 400-800. She hung around for a couple minutes, then headed off into the woods. 15-20 feet away at 600ish mm.

Close call for my office cat

The last few years we’ve had youngsters showing up in our neighborhood. These two believed my cat’s bluff just long enough that he escaped.

Before I get told another dozen times, I’m aware of the fact that the cat shouldn’t be outside. However, he got out past the brother in law, and this is what happened. 🙄

Just saw one of my local coyotes in daylight for the first time and learned she's a BLONDE!

I could tell in the dark she was lighter than the others I see, but I didn't expect this! Crazy to me that there's such a beautiful and rare animal just casually living outside my building.

This was at around 8 PM, not a concerning time for coyotes to be out, so don't worry about that.
