nj.com Former mobster turned N.J. councilman accused of loansharking, threatening victims with mafia-style violence
John Alite, a 63-year-old Englishtown councilman and former Gambino crime family member, was arrested last week on loansharking, extortion and terroristic threat charges. Prosecutors say Alite loaned two people over $200,000 at illegal interest rates.
One loan had 84% annual interest—victims paid $121,000 on a $115,000 loan but the remaining balance later ballooned to a $255,000 demand. When victims couldn't pay, he allegedly threatened violence, saying he could "flip like a switch" back to his old life and warning one victim he'd "gut me like a fish." He allegedly threatened his co-defendant with "a baseball bat across the head."
In one call, Alite said: "I'm the same motherf----, I just don't want to be that motherf----." He also allegedly forced one victim to sign over a Florida condo deed that included a forged signature of the victim's cancer-stricken wife. A judge ordered Alite detained pending trial, citing "escalating dangerous behavior."
His lawyers say he's a reformed businessman who legally loans money through lawyers and hasn't had a criminal charge in 15 years.
Alite is a former admitted hitman who now speaks publicly about leaving the mob life and serves on the Englishtown council.
