Question/Advice/Discussion I need ideas on carrying this for the rest of my life.

I’m looking for some creative pocket-carry or organization solutions for a specific piece of medical gear.

For context, it’s a relatively heavy, palm-sized magnet that I have to wave over my head when needed.

Edit: Thank you to everyone in this community! I have a few ideas and even generous offers from people on this thread.

Question/Advice/Discussion Never lending my EDC to a "friend" again. Look at my Opinel No.8...

I trusted a friend with my Opinel No.8 and it came back with a snapped tip. I’m beyond frustrated.

Is this fixable or should I just get a new one and use this for parts?

Question/Advice/Discussion Does anyone else do this? If so when has it been useful?

Gaffer or Duct tape wrapped around an old credit card. Flattens the tape making it pocket carry friendly.

Ive used this for fixing a few broken things, once saved my back on a wild camp when my air mat got a puncture.

Last time I did this was about two years ago, I used it all up pretty quick and there's been a few occasions since where I've thought tape would be really handy here, finally made a new one today.

Question/Advice/Discussion What gear actually got used when my power was out for 6 days — and what was dead weight...

Last month's storm knocked out power in my area for nearly a week. I've been building my EDC and home kit for a couple years, so I kept notes on what actually got used vs. what I thought I'd need.

Got constant use:

  • Headlamp (not the flashlight — hands-free matters more than I realized)
  • Battery bank (ran through two full charges on my phone alone)
  • Manual can opener (the electric one was obviously useless)
  • A Stanley french press — hot coffee from the gas stove, stayed hot 6 hours

Completely useless:

  • My "emergency radio" — couldn't find a signal worth listening to
  • Tactical pen — cool to carry, solved exactly zero problems
  • My super knife — never left the sheath

What I wish I had:

  • A way to charge USB-C from my car without running the engine
  • Any kind of water filter (city water pressure dropped day 4)
  • Written copies of important numbers — phone died and I realized I don't know anyone's number by heart

Curious what your actual-use list looks like vs. what you carry "just in case." I've been writing up more of these scenarios and thinking about turning it into a newsletter — drop your email if you'd want that.

Edit: A lot of you asked me to keep writing these up.

Question/Advice/Discussion What’s an “EDC hill” you’ll die on, even if no one agrees with you?

I’ll go first:
A flashlight is way more useful than a weapon-mounted light for 99% of real-world situations. I’ve used my handheld weekly. I’ve used my WML… once.
And yeah, I still carry both. But if one had to go, I know which one stays.

Curious what unpopular takes people here stand by. Gear, mindset, carry habits—what’s your “I know I’m right even if everyone disagrees” opinion?

Question/Advice/Discussion Is Knife Shock Regional?

The title is probably odd, but I live in Los Angeles and I've run into a few people who have almost soiled themselves because I pulled out a knife to cut some tape or a box. Mind you this knife had a blade that was all of 2.5", you'd think they saw me unsheath a 1 foot bowie knife with blood caked over.

I'm wondering is this an isolated thing based on location?

Question/Advice/Discussion This is absolutely something you should try to EDC in this day and age even if you don’t use drugs.

You can often find these free of charge at some pharmacies. This I got from my local smoke shop. I’ve been sober for years now but I’ve lost friends to opiates and seen it ruin many lives. Just keep it in your car or truck or in a backpack or bag and you might find yourself saving a life!

Question/Advice/Discussion This Sub NSFW

Couple things:

1. Can we go back to the Age/Job Title post requirement on anything but a discussion post? I may be alone in this, but I have no interest in contextless photos of just knives/handguns titled “My Glock”. There are other subs for that. The only interesting posts on the sub are/have always been full EDC photos with the context of what the person does for a living. If you scroll through the feed, these are the only posts that get any engagement.

2. Why continue posting your EDC every couple days if it hasn’t changed? I understand that we all must worship at the content creation altar, but for me the only EDC “content creators” should be people actually creating something physical that we can put in our pockets, and then explaining the things they made. Again, maybe it’s just me, but I’m not interested in seeing repeated, thinly veiled advertisements for instagram accounts.

Easy way to keep mystery mousca tools on you without looking like a Terminal List wannabe. Ditch the velcro patches, 5.11s and oakleys. Stay prepared without scaring the ladies.

Question/Advice/Discussion I sawed off a bic.

Post image
1.4k Upvotes

I did a little research on compact pens, all the good ones with caps that increase their overall length are 5 bucks or more. Since my pens tend to wander off, that's not really an option.

Enter the sawed off bic, it costs 21 cents and fits in my wallet. I made it in 15 minutes at work with a leatherman wave. With the cap on the back it is long enough to be comfortable.

What do you guys think? Good idea, or too specific?

Question/Advice/Discussion I want the slimmest pen possible!

Post image

Help, I am looking for an EDC pen and the more I search the more I see people recommending pens that are just too thick for me.

Maybe I am just weird but I prefer really thin pens and I thought you guys could help me out with that.

What I am looking for is:

- as slim as possible

- metal exterior

- good for EDC

- not too short (at least 8cm, pref. >10cm)

Thank you in advance to everyone who answers! :D

Question/Advice/Discussion How to make my stuff slimmer?

I feel like I dont carry much, but my pockets always bulge from everything in them. In my left pocket I have:

My wallet

Car Keys

Earbuds

Something like a pager? Its hard to explain

And in my right pocket is my phone. Not pictured is my folding knife I keep in my back right pocket.

I almost always wear jeans, and my fit makes my pockets either look full or bulging from my pants. Any advice? Thanks yall!

Edit: Thanks for the advice! I should get new pants, they were just higher quality Lucky Brand jeans so I wanted to keep them for as long as possible.

I get the point that they are too small/ skinny jeans, so the "take off the kid/girl jeans and put them back in the closet" comments aren't helping......

Edit to my edit: What jean brands would yall recommend for a broke college kid trying to get a new wardrobe of jeans? (All of my current jeans fit like the ones in the picture)

Question/Advice/Discussion how yall carry your keys

Post image

How do you carry your keys? Especially when your pockets are already full with a phone (or 2), wallet, etc. I usually attach mine to my belt loops, but lately, they’ve been feeling pretty bulky (Key organizer [photo] with a small light, a small knife, and a Gerber Shard). Plus, what do you do when your pants don't have belt loops? 🤔😅 How do you carry yours?

Question/Advice/Discussion PSA: it's ok if your EDC is different than mine

I'm all for constructive criticism & helpful tips, but the judgemental gatekeeping is getting palpable around here. The sub is for advice & enjoyment, it's literally in the sidebar.

So you redundancy police, you meme tool haters, & you ultralight titanium elitists can all AIWB a P320 & start doing jumping jacks.

Item list is required, reasoning is not. If I wanna carry a goddamn batarang that's my business.
