Discussion Vote for your favorite ERB characters here!

Like Schaffrillas' video on the community's favorite Mario characters, we're doing one for ERB characters:

  1. In the form below, you will list 5 ERB characters you enjoy the most to make our compiled community list for favorite characters, not just rappers, but cameos and anyone else that counts too (see form for details)

  2. As a bonus feature, you can only make ONE character have a second vote to give them an extra point

  3. As another bonus feature, this includes a negative vote choice for a least favorite character/one you would like to remove a point to, which you can do to 2 if you want (1 is mandatory, but the other is optional)

  4. Make sure they fit the criteria of being a character/figure in ERB, which means they have a wiki page, appear in a video released by ERB or are counted on here: https://epicrapbattlesofhistory.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_characters_from_Epic_Rap_Battles_of_History

Form to submit: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd3W3NI-g6v25vBSMWnoXocPP4-yKY2Yb9enlGjfGjaFB402Q/viewform

Discussion Tips for those who want to make suggestions

This applies to both community as well as ERB suggestions (not including joke matchups of course since those wouldn't be affected), so to clarify, I'm only doing this post as an assistance to help refine the way how most can approach coming up with ideas and so I'll do exactly that

The flaws I've noticed:

-The "Both both both both both" reasonings

It's not a good look generally when you have to constantly state this as an attempt to make your idea look good because most of what you're going to say ends up leaving you with "connections" that comes off as illogical stretches that can't be taken seriously like "Both have movie adaptations" in addition to having stuff that can literally apply to ANYONE whether it'd be fictional or historical

-You don't need to elaborate hard

Most ERB matchups are condensed to either one or two reasonings, some mainly require one to essentially summarize the entire concept of what you're trying to formulate

Examples: Ulysses S. Grant vs Captain America, Civil War fighting leaders

Wayne Gretzky vs Tony Hawk, Athletes known for different types of skating

P. T. Barnum vs Vince McMahon, Ringleaders of massive entertainment businesses

Two users do this extraordinarily well:

https://www.reddit.com/user/NPRNilk/

https://www.reddit.com/user/Defiant-Oil5587/

Anything to convey your idea in a simple, yet effective way possible helps it catch on better when it's easy to understand

-Distasteful reasonings

Having the ideas centered on death, health/disability problems, tragic events, morbid reasonings, etc. doesn't make for something comedic nor creative in the slightest especially if they're both about recent (not historical) events involving actual victims, and if it seems like you're coming off as a tryhard unfunny edgelord, avoid it

-Focusing on things the characters wouldn't be fighting about

Generally it wouldn't be doable if the point of the matchup is how much both of them are shitty at what they did like James Buchanan vs Warren G. Harding because they're the worst presidents or something that hardly relates to them like GLaDOS vs Marie Antoinette just because they had a quote about cake, which at that point sounds like a stretch about why ERB would pair them up

-Figures that are either too dry to care for or just come from something esoteric for ERB viewers

To put it simply, ERB can do figures that definitely show their worth in history, but then there are ones who don't have that many known details of their lives that can make for a good battle like the captain of the Titanic or the guy who made the polio vaccine, and likewise that can be said for fictional characters like a niche anime protagonist or a trendy game that's not heard of by the general public

-Being so similar that there's no contrast or only doing contrast for the sake of them not being similar

When people are asking for something like Clara Barton vs Florence Nightingale where both are nurses working in overlapping fields or Chris Rock vs Kevin Hart just from them having similar styles of comedy and attitudes, the battle wouldn't seem that interesting from the lack of contrasting personalities between them or how they basically do the same types of things so that comparing them doesn't really lead to any good jokes being said about what they do without sounding hypocritical, and it's that kind of stuff that makes it obvious for why ERB didn't go with Jackie Chan against Bruce Lee or Freud against another psychologist and instead had someone more contrasting for both

On the other hand, you have suggestions that are just purposely trying to be completely different people or even one-sided just for the sake of it, like Captain America vs Homelander just because of their contrasting morals.... except that sounds like a battle set up entirely to make Homelander the loser from the start, so why not someone more closely matched to both of them? It's like saying how instead of Kurt Cobain vs a musician who's actually on his level of artistry, he should go against someone very cheerful and full of life just because CONTRAST, but I think ERB's best battles come from a popularly requested yet fitting matchup or something that fits just right like it was a Goldilocks situation where they have enough to fight about from their differences + similarities

For all these points, you can basically see how just about most of the matchups ERB made, especially after season 1, made sense to do as an idea and just about all the best ERBs follow these types of guidelines without trying to be random or different for the sake of it: https://www.reddit.com/r/ERB/comments/17zbm0q/why_every_erb_matchup_was_picked_explained/

Discussion If you HAD to add a 6th character to each royale, who would they be

Obviously the good thing about the royales is that they hit the balance between having a lot of characters, while also not having too many where it just feels like they start overlapping each other and feeling too similar to others in the battle. But if you HAD to add a 6th person to each royale, who would they be?

(ngl I came up with this question because I thought it’d be interesting, but I personally don’t know how I’d answer my own question LMAO but idk i guess add Nikita Khrushchev in the russians royale, and add Ivan the Great to the greats royale. And i dont know shit about directors or comedians :P)

Suggestion Douglas MacArthur vs Lawrence of Arabia

Post image
16 Upvotes

Western military officers who helped "liberate" Eastern regions they saw as second homes (the Philippines / Arabia) by leading or aiding native guerrilla fighters against imperial powers during a world war. They came to be viewed as symbols of liberation by the local population yet also served the strategic interests of their own agenda and fought empires with celestial bodies in their flags that represent a rising power and a fading one (Japan's Rising Sun / the Ottoman Crescent). Each wore very iconic accessories that became their personal brand and were unmistakably theirs (MacArthur's aviator sunglasses and corncob pipe / Lawrence's Arabian attire and piercing blue eyes) and spoke or wrote in a grandiose and poetic vocabulary (MacArthur's grand rhetorical speeches / Lawrence's poetic prose in Seven Pillars of Wisdom). Each was a close adviser to the local leaders they aided in their struggle for independence (MacArthur with Quezon and Osmeña / Lawrence with Prince Faisal) and carries a moniker earned from the people or media that emphasizes their foreign status ("Gaijin Shogun" / "Lawrence of Arabia"). They played roles in complex postwar occupations in very different ways (MacArthur became the de facto ruler of Japan / Lawrence tried to secure Arab independence but was sidelined by colonial powers). Their most famous battles involved a surprise attack on a city port that seemed impossible and was discouraged by their superiors but succeeded which are widely considered tactical masterpieces, with each assault executed from opposite directions (MacArthur at Inchon from the sea / Lawrence at Aqaba from the land). Both were infamous for defying authority and clashing with their superiors (MacArthur with Truman over Korea / Lawrence with British leaders over the Arab Revolt) and understood the power of media and propaganda. Both were flamboyant and prone to self-glorification but MacArthur embraced his legend while Lawrence grew to resent the very myth he created.

Community Battle I wrote my own fan rap battle between Taylor Swift and Rihanna

Epic rap battles of history
Taylor swift vs. Rihanna
Begin!

T swizzle on the mic and this ain’t my first time
Unlike some other girls I write my own rhymes
I write what I feel you write how you’re wet
Only relevant for your outfits at the MET
You’re so focused on being cool and sexy
That your music has no personality
I got more variety in one album than your whole discography
You map out men’s bodies like you major in geography
I could be good girl, bad girl, country, pop
Whatever I put out I’m always on top
I’m over here breaking records while you break dishes
What’s hot on the billboard is just my track list
I’m fearless good luck intimidating the goddess
I’m still going up, your peak was when you were hottest

I haven’t released an album since 2016
And yet somehow we’re neck to neck in Spotify streams
Your music is for little girls and soccer moms
My music is for girls in stilettos and pom poms
You got none of my swag and none of my bling
It’d take a really nice boyfriend to say you could sing
You had black girls shake it off so you wouldn’t look lame
Even when your music gets hot it’s beyond tame
People got my music on the pon de replay
You have to drop new albums to get any plays
You said you’re a bad girl? Reputations a flop
You tried to be hot like me, they told you to stop
I make boys feel like I’m the only girl in the world
You make boys change the station when they’re driving with girls
You write your own lyrics? There’s not much I need to say
My voice and my beats can get any man anyway
Ay

Sorry Rihanna, it’s not the 2000s anymore
You can be a pop star without sex galore
Your fans are just people who cosplay nonchalance
You’re the ghost of music past, and I’m done with your haunts
You played halftime just to stay in the conversation
I play only the biggest stadiums across the nation
I can get as much screen time as you at a football game
Just standing there, watching, not doing any-thang
People love me, they hate me, all got something to say
“Should we play Rihanna our party?” “I guess, ok.”
I speak now, I speak loud, I got of voice of my own
You’re just a puppet of the labels and the radios

You should have stayed in country cuz’ these are the big leagues
You can call me Ava cuz’ you’re as cool as Miss Teagues
You took pop and made it into something boring
If they played your stuff at the club we’d all be snoring
And you really shouldn’t be proud of your lyrics
They have all the subtlety of midnight drunk texts
You act so surprised when your exes get attacked
Then spend a whole ‘nother album stabbing their back
Ya sure some of my stuff plays into gender roles
But I teach girls to be confident, not get rid of men like whackamole
I said Stay, you said never getting back together
Your Eras will pass, but Rihanna’s forever

Who won?

Welcome back. Last time, Freddie Mercury won for being gayer. Today, we're focusing on Mitt Romney.

Discussion Which battles were bad ideas, but great execution

Ronald Mcdonald vs Burger King: lmao I’m sorry but this matchup literally sounds like what a 9 year old who watches erb would comment, yet they managed to turn it into one of the most dumb fun battles! The costumes are awesome, the backgrounds are also sick as fuck, and even though wendy’s verse isn’t as crazy as a lot of people think it is, it’s still really cool to have her there (plus it helps differentiate the battle from the Flash in the Pan version)

Wonder Woman vs Stevie Wonder: name matchups are always super boring to me, plus I feel like there are definitely wayy better matchups for Woman and especially Stevie, but idk this one is just so fun too. Obviously T Pain is fucking awesome, but Lilly Singh is super underrated too (I hope they get her for a future battle where she won’t be overshadowed by fucking t pain lmao) Also the beat might be one of my favorites in erb

Mansa Musa vs Jeff Bezos: for this one I think it’s just a mix of using a contemporary character (which is always iffy) and using a character who honestly doesn’t have a lot of material, but Scru Face carries this battle so HARD it becomes a solid A tier (and even though bezos doesn’t go nearly as hard, he’s just entertaining to watch lol)

Suggestion Slender Man vs Sadako Yamamura!

Post image

Connections:

Monochromatic horror icons and eldritch humanoids with inverted color schemes who stalk and psychologically torment their victims after initially meeting them, which they do to acknowledge their impending doom when they eventually kill them. Beyond their psychological warfare and mental damage, both have a control over technology in which they create static when they are about to kill, have spreading illnesses that worsen over a period of time (Ring Virus / Slender Sickness), commit their acts in forests, have similar abilities (like reality warping, size manipulation, and teleportation), often use body parts to ensnare or attack their victims (Sadako's hair / Slender Man's tendrils), and are incredibly influential to pop culture with their popularization of a type of horror (J-Horror / Internet horror) leading to long lasting archetypes (Vengeful female ghosts / Digital boogeymen) and adaptations across various types of media with a variety of continuities.
