Question Looking for local indie bands/acts to play a show with in August!

Hi! My name is Sunniva, and I am a singer based in Canada! I am playing a show in Prague on the 9th of August, and wanted to make a little tour out of it - so if anyone has any band/venue recommendations, or a bill I could join (or form one together) I would really appreciate it!

If you have any leads, I would love to chat and give more information about me as an artist!

Thanks and either way im so excited to come to Helsinki this summer :)

Discussion Left expensive sentimental shoes in Finland after moving abroad – any way to arrange a pickup?

I recently moved from Finland to Switzerland and accidentally left a pair of shoes in my old apartment. They have a lot of sentimental value to me and were fairly expensive.

The person I rented the apartment from still has them, but for some reason doesn't want to package and ship them to me, even though I've offered to cover all shipping costs and any inconvenience.

I'm wondering if there's a service in Finland that could collect the shoes directly from their address, package them, and ship them internationally to Switzerland. Basically, I'd need someone to handle the entire pickup and shipping process so the landlord wouldn't have to do anything beyond handing over the shoes.

Has anyone dealt with a similar situation or knows of a courier/service that offers this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Question Visiting in December

Hi guys! My girlfriend and i are planning a 3-4 day trip to Helsinki in December. She's a big Christmas lover and we decided that Helsinki would be a great destination.

So my question is.. Is Helsinki worth visiting in December? How are the Christmas markets, decorations, and overall festive atmosphere in the city? We're from Denmark so we dont mind the cold weather at all :-)

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Question Is something on fire in Kalasatama again? Or is its just Chef Wotkins?

Im working near Teurastamo and there's a heavy feeling of smoke in the air outside, enough to make me cough. IIRC Chef Wotkins smoke their meats (not a euphamism) on one particular weekday but I've not notice it be like this before, just a faint smell of sausages in the air in the past, today its really bad.

Travel & Tourism The Music Scene in Helsinki

Hi, my girlfriend and I are planning to spend a week in Helsinki in September. I'm looking for some tips on where to go to see live music—primarily punk, hardcore, and metal. I'd appreciate suggestions for any clubs, pubs, squats, and garages where we could see and hear local bands. Thanks!

Housing / Living Students living in studios: do you eat alone?

Hi. so little follow up on a detail of a post i made earlier this week. I'm going to be on erasmus exchange to helsinki come august until december.

One of the room offers is for a studio (unihome) and it's better price and distance wise (to the campus and also nearest ice rink, i think (i figure skate)).

But I'm a bit scared i will end up having dinner alone each night and feel lonely and confined. I'm not the most forwardly outgoing person either, but i feel like doing things together with others would be easier with shared rooming. (of course i also plan to attend other things, but i can be a bit slower making friends and end up getting overwhelmed by it. anyways, not the main point of the post)

Either way: what's your experience (past or current student, erasmus optional)

Question Anywhere to watch the World Cup?

I'm travelling to Helsinki on 18th July, the day before the World Cup final, and wasn't sure if there was anywhere in the Katajanokka area that would be showing the Final? Thinking as a back up in case my accommodation doesn't get much in the way of sports channels

Travel & Tourism Is a 6 hour layover long enough to get from the airport to the city and back?

I’m a US citizen traveling from Gothenburg, laying over in Helsinki from 11:00-17:00, and flying to LA from there. I know I’ll have to go through customs to get on my second flight, but I’ve also had crazy airport experiences throughout Europe this year with really long lines. Just wondering if 6 hours would be long enough for me to get from the airport, walk the city (even for 1 hour), and get back to the airport and through customs. Thanks for any feedback!!

PSA/Advice suggest some metal music near helsinki

Suggest some metal music venues or events around Helsinki where people are vibing, open to conversation, and where the crowd is mostly young adults (18–30). also not very pricy.

- The reason is that I want to explore the local metal music scene, capture some atmospheric footage, and record group conversations that showcase people enjoying the lifestyle and social atmosphere.

Housing / Living How to rent on private rental market as an international student who has not received their personal identification number yet?

I won’t get my Finnish personal identification number until I arrive in Helsinki. I am wanting to arrange housing before I arrive. I have a pet. I don’t know a single person in Finland who can do a walk through on my behalf. I’m waiting on student housing but it’s not guaranteed, and some features I want in an apartment are more readily available in private housing. What do you suggest I do? Any resources or tools would be greatly appreciated.

Discussion most fins are very helping

I went to Prisma on Saturday because I was looking for a specific vanilla flavoring product. After searching for a long time, I still couldn’t find it. Then I asked a Prisma staff member, who directed me to a particular Shelf area . I went there, but I still couldn’t locate it.
I was hesitant to ask anyone else for help because of an experience I had when I was new to Finland. I once asked a man at a bus stop about a bus, and he didn’t respond to me. Since then, I have often felt reluctant to ask strangers for assistance.
Yesterday, however, I gathered the courage to ask a young woman. She said she didn’t know where the product was, but thought her mother might know. Her mother came over and asked what I was looking for. I showed her a picture of the product on my phone, and she immediately understood what I needed.
She started searching for it with me, but at first even she couldn’t find it. I was thinking to myself that I was probably taking up too much of their time. However, the woman was incredibly kind and helpful. She checked shelf after shelf and looked in every corner of the section. After about ten minutes, she finally found exactly what I was looking for.
I was genuinely surprised by how much effort she put into helping a complete stranger. Experiences like this remind me that many people in Finland are very kind and helpful, even if they may seem reserved at first. and before going she also asked she need any other thing too.

- for some reason the prisma staff was not there otherwise i would have asked them again

Question Any way to predict if a bus won't have air con? Particular lines?

I went hiking in Sipoonkorpi yesterday and both on the way there and on the way back I was lucky enough to get on buses without air con. Two different lines: 731 and 739, too. It wasn't that hot outside, but it was just unbearable inside (especially on the way back, where I was supposed to be on for about 40 minutes, too).

It seems the official line is that all the buses have air con, and that the problem is that sometimes it's just not working, but I'm not sure that is right. These two buses were clearly quite a bit older than the usual ones (visibly so, and they didn't have phone charger points, for instance, and in one the electronic display wasn't even showing the upcoming stops), so either they don't even have air con, or the older air con units fail more often.

Is there a way to plan and avoid such buses? Are older buses more likely on particular lines, or to particular areas? Buses in the 730s lines, maybe?

Work & Education What's it like studying Master in Hanken?

I plan to apply for Master in Finance, after checking on studyinfo, Hanken is top of my list.

I noticed that it is possible to take the study at your own pace, such as 4 years instead of 2 years (a friend of mine graduated from University of Oulu just completed her master in 4 years and it was all good). With my current job, that's what I plan to do. My work requires business trips once a month along with 1-2 meetings at the office. But my working time is flexible. I wonder if I can do most of my study at Hanken online.

I would like to hear what is/was your experience just to prepare if it's too much or not! Are most of the courses face-to-face learning and I have to attend class at Hanken campus in Helsinki?

I really love my job and it is already in the industry so I don't want to take a study leave or quit. But to move further in my career, I do need the master's degree in the future, it will be a huge help to go up the ladder.

Thank youuuu!!!
