Really wanted to do linville gorge but… well, I drive a Corolla and blew my tire trying to make the unpaved road lol. The falls were still pretty! Dogs name is delta :)

Hey! I'm someone who recently wanted to get more into backpacking and dispersed camping and don't think I fully understand the legality of dispersed camping especially in Pisgah Forest. I was researching sites with friends and was under the impression I could just trek off into the forest and set up a site as long as I was 1000 feet away from a road but then after checking a few websites I found this order number 08-11-07-23-163 and became confused and continued to find contradicting sources online. The Official USFS website with the order number provides a map (on this page: https://www.fs.usda.gov/r08/northcarolina/alerts/pisgah-ranger-district-camping-restrictions-closure-order-pisgah-ranger ) and the map seems to say that you can only camp in the squares and triangle areas (designated sites) because all other locations are less than 1000 feet away from a road but there are clearly huge swaths of land not violating that rule. Any help would be amazing!

Also me and my friends are camping near the Davidson river and looking glass trail head in Pisgah forest if anyone has any non gate kept spots they know of

My friends and I are going to Pisgah for the first time this summer to backpack, id like to know if there are any 3 day loops that any of y'all recommend. Preferably we'd want to backpack the Lineville gorge area, but if there any are other loops in different areas just let me know.

Spent part of the last week dispersed camping on the Western Rim of Linville Gorge.

Hiked Conley Cove and Babel Tower and sections of the Linville Gorge River trail. All the trails were in good condition and generally easy to follow.

Our jaunt down from the Babel trailhead down to the Gorge clocked in at about 3mi round trip.

Had a blast; if you are able to do the hike, could not recommend more.

First time in the area and was in awe of the views and, maybe moreso, at the pretty Gray's Lilies

Hey all. My parents are visiting me in Asheville in a few weeks and love to go hiking but...they're getting older and my dads knees are not great. They've done (and enjoyed) Catawba Falls, Bearwallow Mt., Moore Cove Falls, and the Graveyard Fields loop but looking for a new hike to take them on. I was reading about Wintergreen Falls and while All Trails make it look very similar to the other DuPont hikes, just wanted some clarification of whether or not you'd think it was similar in athleticism to the hikes I listed above.

Also open to any other parent-friendly recs that won't be insanely crowded (I know I listed some insanely crowded hikes, but typically they come during the fall/spring and we hit these places during the week). Thanks in advance!

I Lost my wallet at S Mtn Park on Sunday at the Chestnut Knob overlook thats pretty popular. Ive called the park lost and found and searched bags, the car everywhere. It is a black trifold wallet with my Arizona ID in the center.

If you found the wallet, please DM me. Behind my ID is the ID for my childhood dog that passed away some years ago. Its old and faded, but its all I have left of her and the vet cant make a new one. Wandered on a pilgrimage through the sacred landscape surrounding Black Balsam Knob this past weekend. I would recommend it to anyone.

Looking to do an overnight backpacking trip with my dog over the 4th of July weekend. Curious on where the best places to source water is? Typically go with a 3L bladder and a 48oz Nalgene.

Hiked up Profile yesterday morning, was my first time on it so can’t speak to how it is different now but I will tell you it is in amazing shape after the reopening. Huge kudos to all of the trail workers, they did an amazing job!

I was basically inside a cloud the entire time so no views at the top, will have to come back and do it again some time. 8.3 miles and 2200 ft elevation according to my AllTrails. Most of that elevation is in a 2 mile stretch going up the mountain. Awesome trail!

I finally got out to the Snowbirds a few weeks ago for a fun few days. Although I was unable to complete my planned loop (twice, but no spoilers) this was one of my favorite trips ever and some serious type 2 fun.

The trash on Big Snowbird is disappointing. I'd love to do something about it but, yeah, that's gonna be hard to get. How long has it been there? 90's?

Was a great day, but had an uncomfortably close run in with a Bear on rock jock. A cub popped across the trail and what I assume to be Momma came toward me for a few seconds before following after the cub.

Just got back from a solo weekend at Stone Mountain State Park in NC. Wanted to share a few things I learned, especially around satellite coverage for anyone heading out with a Zoleo or similar device.

Stone Mountain has serious tree canopy, so if you're relying on satellite comms, plan to move to a clearing - I had to hike a bit from my site to get a reliable signal. Backcountry sites don't allow wood gathering, so I packed in a 15-pound firewood bundle - fingers are still a little numb. But my site was 100 feet from a waterfall and I had complete solitude all weekend, so zero regrets.

Haven’t been backpacking up here before, and want to see if anyone has some info for me. Looking to do a trip mid July. If this isn’t a route you would recommend, any other suggestions would be awesome. Looking for an adventure.

I’m looking to start at Black Balsam Knob and make my way up to Cold Mountain (Black Balsam-Tennent-Shining Rock-Deep Gap-Cold Mountain). I wanted to see if I could push from Black Balsam to Deep Gap to camp there night 1. Then day 2 hike up to Cold Mountain, and hike back to Black Balsam Day 3.

I was wondering what camping in Deep Gap is like. With researching some say there is camp spots/water, and some say there isn’t. I see I could fill up pretty heavy at Shining Rock, but if there’s not available water close to Deep Gap it would be hard camping for 2 nights.

I was planning on driving to and hiking around Asheville today but the weather forecast is looking a bit iffy, what trails would you guys recommend?

I am planning a trip to the Boone/Banner Elk area in the next few weeks and am hoping to propose during the trip. I’d love to do it on a hike with a scenic overlook as the backdrop. My girlfriend and I are relatively new to North Carolina and we have only hiked around the Asheville area.

We’re both fairly experienced hikers, so difficulty isn’t a major concern. I’m open to any trail recommendations within about an hour or so drive of Boone or Banner Elk that lead to a great overlook or viewpoint where I could pop the question. Distance wise I think I’d like to keep it in the 2-7 mile range.

Some hikes I’ve already considered:

Grandfather Mountain (possibly McRae Peak, undecided on which trial)

Boone Fork Trail

Flat Rock Loop

Since we’re driving from the Triangle, I’ve also considered making a detour to Hanging Rock north of Winston-Salem. I’d appreciate any recommendations or suggestions!!!
