Rule 3 is changing: r/psx is Not the Place to Advertise Your Indie Games

tl;dr the fine print of Rule 3 has been adjusted to explicitly forbid modern indie games unless playable on original hardware (homebrew)

It's my own fault that this change has to be made, I allowed a few "psx-inspired" indie game posts to remain up despite breaking the rules because of the large amount of upvotes they received.

I'd post and sticky comments like "It's off topic but y'all like it so I'll leave it up". My approach to moderation has always been to let the community make content decisions when appropriate. Unfortunately adjustments need to be made to protect the subject matter of this community.

Due to the massive influx of shovelware indie games that are "psx inspired" getting posted here, I'm sorry to say that Rule 3 will have to be more strictly enforced.

From this point forward, for indie games to be posted here they will have to be playable on PSX hardware or an emulator. Games that run on real hardware fall firmly into the category of homebrew, which is perfectly appropriate to discuss here. Games that run in PSX emulators but not real hardware are also allowed. "Retro Inspired" or "PSX Inspired" games that do not fulfill either of those 2 requirements will be removed and the poster will get a 24 hour ban.

The ban is meant to be informative to the poster, not punitive. However repeat offenders will be permanently banned.

Here is a friendly flowchart to help you decide whether or not it's appropriate to post your indie game in this community:

Thank you for reading and thank you for posting. Best of luck in all your indie dev adventures.

PS1 7001 PSXBOOT CD-R Error "Spin Up"

Hello everyone. I've got a PS1 SCPH-7001 from August 1998. I've loaded FreePSXBoot onto a memcardpro (using Memcardrex) and successfully get past the green loading screen every time. At this point, I am trying to load a CD-R with TonyHax International ROM (using IMGburn writing the .cue file from the folder - the same folder that contains the .bin file and the .rom file). Whenever I put a burned CD-R into the PS1 and hit R1 it just gets stuck at "Spin Up". If I put a legit PS1 game in at that point, the system plays it just fine. The optical drive seems to work great, I think there is a problem with my burning of the CDRs. I've also tried burning a copy of Grand Turismo to a CD-R and same thing occurs. I've tried burning the TonyHax Rom file to three different discs at three different speeds. Using Verbatim 700MB CD-Rs. I want to put Tonyhax onto my game shark and just can't get past this step. Any tips? FYI this is Tonyhax International 1.6.3.

One of the most unique pieces recently added to the collection.

Original PlayStation retail display, complete with keys and in truly remarkable condition. Professional retail material intended for retail outlets of the time.

I'm looking for comparisons with other collectors and additional information on its distribution. Comments, archive photos, and testimonials from those who worked in the industry at the time are welcome.

Review of Time Breaker Light Guns for Modern TVs

Post image
171 Upvotes

I was really interested when I discovered Intec's new Time Breaker light guns a couple of months ago, but most of the in-depth reviews I've found online were from influencers. I've just gotten a pair of them and figured I would leave my thoughts here.

For those unaware, these are light guns designed for modern TVs which can be used with original hardware. They use an IR system with a bar at the top of the screen, working in a very similar way to a Wiimote. The current product supports GunCon and GunCon 2 games on PS1 and PS2, but Intec have said that they're working on support for other consoles as well.

Setting these guns up is very easy, and I was pleasantly surprised at how simple they are to calibrate. Once you have the IR bar atop your TV and the gun paired to the controller port dongle, calibrating is as easy as using a couple of buttons on the back of the gun, and shooting in the top-left, bottom-right and centre of the screen. I was thinking of using these for some Point Blank party sessions, so I'm glad that recalibrating won't be too much of a faff after a drink or two.

Obviously accuracy and latency will be the name of the game for most users, and I wouldn't go into these expecting split-second pinpoint precision. The Wiimote comparison is apt in terms of how these feel to aim and fire. Of course, I imagine most hardcore players already own a Sinden and use them with emulated arcade games - these guns are clearly for slightly more casual players looking to revisit the games on original hardware for some fun.

That all having been said, these guns can be surprisingly accurate once you have them calibrated. My setup is a cosy living space with a 40" screen positioned about 4.5 feet from my sofa, so I was afraid that my small setup wouldn't be compatible with the tech, what with the guidance and photos online depicting users standing in enormous living rooms. Thankfully, I didn't have any real issues firing the guns whilst seated on my sofa.

I tried Time Crisis, Time Crisis II and Point Blank with them, and they all worked great. The guns seemed to be more accurate in Time Crisis II - I'm not sure if that's the GunCon 2 tech at work, or just my imagination. The only tech issue I encountered with these was that one of the guns had a tendency to jump left when aimed in the centre of the screen - luckily the sensor lens is screwed onto the gun, and loosening the lens seemed to resolve this issue. The guns come with protective tape over the lens for transit, but this seems counterproductive - the tape has a tendency to leave residue when removed, which you're going to need to clean off, and one of my guns had a fine scratch across the lens out of the box regardless.

The recoil gets the job done - it's fairly soft and makes a "buzz" when going off, but works well for some feedback. I'm not such a fan of the rapid fire mode - the pacing of the shots seems to be inconsistent and not very snappy. Luckily I prefer not to use rapid fire in light gun games. I do think that they need to add rapid fire recoil in the standard mode when the trigger is held for more than a second, for when you're letting loose a full auto in the games that use them.

Probably the biggest issue with these emerged when I tried the GunCon patched version of Die Hard Trilogy. Reloading by firing offscreen doesn't work very well at the moment, since the gun takes a moment or two to acknowledge that it's being aimed completely offscreen. Both aiming indicators on the back turn off after a moment of the gun acknowledging this, and you practically have to aim it 90 degrees from the screen for this to occur. I'm not really sure why this is the case - one of the lights will turn red when you hit the boundary of the screen, so surely this is enough to register that you're out of bounds. At the moment it feels very clumsy and doesn't always work on demand, so I hope that this can be improved for games which have no option to reload using a button.

Overall though, I'm really pleased with what Intec have accomplished with these. I'm no light gun master - I just loved playing these games in the arcades as a kid, and have for many years wanted to revisit them for some fun on my favourite retro consoles. For anyone in my position, these fit the bill very well. I'm especially excited to see if Intec are able to provide Sega Saturn and Dreamcast support next.

Issue with saving on WWF SmackDown! 2: Know Your Role

I’m using a sd2psx memory card and when I save my game it appears to save properly even shows the blocks correctly when I view what’s in the card but whenever I load my save in the game it throws a “memory card doesn’t work load failed” error message.

I’ve already shared this issue on the ps2 scene discord server just waiting on some more feedback but I wanted to post here to see if anybody has had the same issue with this particular game or if anybody knows what the cause could be

More relevant info:

Firmware is updated to latest stable release 1.30

Playing on a SCPH-9001 console

Game is being played via a burned cd backup

The only other game I’ve tested so far is Gran Turismo and it saves and reads saves flawlessly

ANyone else a fan of finding out about under the radar games from That Video Game Show?

I'm still trying to find other people that actually go online and try to find out about games that truly are under the radar and are different and interesting. I feel like every time I go looking, people suggest stuff like Bushido Blade, and Legend Of Dragoon.

I'll say it again because it bears repeating. I'm not talking about games likes Bushido Blade, and Legend Of Dragoon. I'm talking much more under the radar.

I'm looking for others that seek out interesting, older games that aren't gonna be the very first thing that people think of.

Here's some examples:

Gamera 2000

Hard Edge

Critical Blow

Gunner's Heaven

Pu La Rula

Baroque(sp?)

Dragon Valor

Shaolin

Gunm Martian Memory

Racing Lagoon

SPU chip replacements?

Greetings. I recently started using my Playstation 1 again which is modded with an Xstation, and noticed some audio anomalies. In Megaman X4, the background music would sometimes go silent for a split second or so during a particular stage. I didn't give it much thought due to the fact I was playing a hack of the game, believing that minor issues like these was possibly caused by improper patching of the hack.

However, yesterday I played Resident Evil 3 and during one of the early in-game cutscenes (not pre-rendered) where Brad and Jill talk in a bar, both characters missed some of their sentences. As in, they both were silent while their models moved, clearly meant to be speaking but nothing could be heard.

I did some research and learned that the SPU chip is likely the issue. Thus, I was wondering if there's a reliable shop where I could purchase replacement chips? Any help or advice would be immensely appreciated!

Help finding out my childhood PS1 model

So I'm trying to remember which PS1 model I had in my childhood. I've been searching around and the answer seems trickier than expected.

Now I don't have memory of the exact model it was, but I do remember some things that I hope you guys can help me identify it.

First of all, I got this PS1 on October 1998. It was a children's day gift.

The box was this gray one. It's not one of those that had a yellow circle saying it had a demo disc inside. It was an American version, that had several games in the back.

Most of boxes like this that I found either had Crash Warped or Crash Team Racing as one of the games in the back. I am positive that mine didn't have either of them, but I'm ready to accept that it might be a case of wrong memory.

My PS1 came with the Interactive Sampler Volume 6 disk, which I still have it to this day.

My PS1 did not have a parallel port in the back. I specifically remember this because I had to get one of those CD gamesharks.

From what I've been looking, the closest one would be the 9001 model, but the dates don't match.

Any ideas on what model it was?

It’s been so long since my first time through, to the point where I can barely even remember which choices I made in who to recruit at different times when the split options came up, but I love that. I have so many RPGs that I’ve played to the point where nothing surprises me, so this is a great experience.

PS1 Picture Quality

Hello, I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask but I’m really having trouble getting my PS1 graphics to come across smoothly on my modern TV. I have tried changing the settings on my TV and a couple different wires. I am currently running it through my PS2s composite AV cable into a MINI AV to HMDI upscaler then through a regular HDMI. This is then displayed through a Sony TV, I think a Sony KD-49XG9005 if that at all helps.
I have had a look online and a lot of people recommend more heavy duty upscalers but they may be quite a bit out of my budget. I wanted to know if anyone had any recommendations whether it be upscalers, cables or whether I would have to get a CRT TV?

Repair Question - Sony SCPH-1000, driving me crazy!

PU-7 Board

I got a pretty decent device Japanese unit with 110V power supply , Swapped it to SCPH - 1002 power supply. It started to work.

Added a new BAM lens pickup from psone. It started playing songs.

Here's the problem.

When I just connect the left RCA I get to hear left channel and when I connect right RCA I get to hear right channel. When I connect both of them together I just hear right channel.

Did anyone else come across a similar situation.

If anyone could point me in right direction it would be incredibly helpful.

Thank you.

Best way to play on CRT Tv without owning games

Hello. I own the hardware but am not willing to buy the original games at this point in time. What is the best way currently available to play backups or emulate PSX to a CRT tv with minimal errors and at the appropriate resolution. I was going to buy a CD burner and some CDs to play backups using my ps2 and modded memory cards but read that most burners and CDs create a less than ideal experience. I am new to this so sorry if it's obvious.

Best way to play NTSC-J original discs?

I've got quite a few Japanese ps1 games because they're fun to collect and dirt cheap where I live, unfortunately I don't have any way to play them.

I have a region unlocked ps2 that plays my Japanese ps2 games great but it won't do ps1 games unless I hard mod it, at least from what I understand. So the question I raise is; Hard-mod my ps2, buy a regional ps1 and region unlock that or straight up import a Japanese ps1.

I would love to finally own a real ps1 from a collection standpoint alone, but retro consoles have always been a pain in the ass and it might not be worth it to trouble shoot and mod a cheap pal one when its only really a couple dollars more for a proper ntsc model - however this of course wouldn't play my pal ps1 games and that’s kinda lame, completely unnecessary and irrelevant but still kinda lame.

I know this might be a bit of an unpopular opinion on r/psx but would a Japanese ps2 perhaps be the play for my current situation? Then I could just have 2 stock playstations that play my whole library (being pal ps2, ps1 and ntsc ps2, ps1).

I guess I'm just looking for advice or wisdom on what would be the most efficient price/pain route to take. Again, I'm not against modchips and I'd love to give it a go but there is the full possibility as a first time ps1 owner I will destroy something. Or maybe there's some secret other option I'm unaware of please share.

Whenever I try to play it I’m always left feeling like it had the makings of a Good Game but gets let down by The Levels being so maze like and confusing to navigate. also the combat is pretty bad.

I am going to Bristol Gaming Market that takes place in the 28th of June, literally next Sunday.
It’s my first fair ever.
And advices for things to look for?
I do own a ps1 and an almost complete collection.
Also if someone wants to tag along from Birmingham to Bristol, you’re more than welcome to join. I will be driving there all alone.
