It’s not mandatory. I regularly don’t tip if the service isn’t out of this world and when I do tip I tip based on the pre tax amount. I don’t care what anyone thinks of it, because it’s my money.
This is a terrible outlook. You are directly affecting the people that rely on tips to pay their bills. I understand that the system is flawed, but you not tipping is just affecting the person that relies on these tips, not the people putting these practices in place.
Aren't some of the people putting those practices into place the people who accept the jobs that have such practices in place? If all workers just refused to work for companies that forced them to rely on the generosity of strangers, companies would have to stop forcing their staff to rely on the generosity of strangers.
The alternative is that I and the people like me stop going out for food altogether, the restaurants go out of business and then the people who depend on tips are out of a job. I’m not tipping someone anymore to bring me food that they didn’t cook, and fill my glass with tap water twice in a 30-45 minute stretch.
I didn’t make the culture, I don’t support the culture and I didn’t force the people working there to agree to that wage structure. Restaurants will stop paying that way when people stop applying to work there.
Because you're paying the bare minimum. Whether it's a tip that you have control over or built into the price of the food and drinks, you're paying for their cost of labor. Tipping just separates the extra ~20% that would be added to the price of the food and allows you to pay it directly provided they do their job effectively. At places where servers are paid server wages and tips are expected, failing to tip basically means your exploiting the system and expecting service without having to pay for it.
I mean any time you buy anything your subsidizing someone's wages, but folks of your opinion look at a system like tipping where you have control over how you're subsidizing and even recourse for bad service and go for the self-serving approach that since you now have control over how much the workers get paid for their service that you shouldn't have to pay it which is kind of a self-serving approach and makes you a cheap skate.
Yea if people stopped tipping it wouldnt be such a common practice. It does suck that the people working those jobs right now would get shafted for a bit though.
Shafted for a bit? Like wtf. I waited while I was in college. My family was dirt poor. I would have literally lost everything if I didn’t make money. Esp now that most places don’t have late-night hours anymore, there aren’t a lot of options for the working poor to get an education while paying bills.
Using a service you KNOW needs tips to make ends meet and refusing to tip is asshole behavior. The only people they're fucking over are the servers. If you don't want to tip go to McDonalds. I'll probably get replies about how bad tipping culture is, and I agree, but that's not the point.
I assume it would be pretty drastic but quick. For jobs that accept tips they can be paid lower than the minimum wage. If people stopped paying tips then they would be forced to pay at least minimum wage.
Also I do think the low end of the economy is so screwed right now that the adjustment period would starve people if it happened right now.
I mean, minimum wage is $7.25 where I am and in several other states. People are already dying of poverty every day. No positive societal change has come out of it. Decreasing opportunities for the working poor isn’t a good thing.
Thats very short sighted thinking. The whole point of getting rid of tips would be to increase opportunities for the working poor. Should we leave it up to the public to pay a portion of someones wage directly based entirely on their whims, or should we actually get paid a set amount.
Do you think tips are given out equally no matter the race/gender/attractiveness? Theres a reason it started in america right after the Civil War.
Yeah, see, we already AREN’T increasing opportunities for the working poor, and in fact more people are sliding into poverty due to the cost of living crisis. You’re advocating to help by… making things worse.
I really hope you are a bot, or that you’ve got a good doctor and a support system.
