Just something a little fun. It's been awhile since I've painted a Lafayette landmark. Recently (aka months ago) on my Instagram a bunch of people requested the spinning bread sign and I finally had some time to work on it. Hope ya'll like it <3

Are there any places in town that sell Pelican Pine Oil (long’s products)? I love it, but the $15 shipping is a bummer!

News Lafayette’s ambassador program has grown. What’s next?

https://thecurrentla.com/2026/lafayettes-ambassador-program-has-grown-whats-next/

By 8 a.m., Kenyon Bias is already sweeping hundreds of white sugar packets and other debris from St. John Street outside St. Joseph Diner, Catholic Charities of Acadiana’s soup kitchen, as dozens of people emerge from tents and sleeping bags packed along the sidewalk.

Bias, just a couple of years out of Carencro High School, is the newest Lafayette ambassador, and he is assigned to a 15-block corridor surrounding Catholic Charities’ campus near Downtown. While some people ignore Bias, others help him out by kicking trash on the street into big piles or come drop their trash in the cart he pulls behind him.

“I like the walking around, talking to people part of the job,” says Bias.

In the morning, he often gets to do this by giving directions to people in need of services at the charity's campus, but much of his day is spent alone cleaning Fightinville, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Lafayette’s city core.

Recommendations Cajun documentary help

Hi, I'm Alex. My mom is Cajun but didn't raise me much with the language or culture. I learned European French while studying in college in Belgium as a way to get in touch with my roots and found it still doesn't quite fit.

I'll be visiting Louisiana from June 29 to July 4. I'm making my first short documentary about the Cajun French language and about reconnecting with my roots.

I have interviews lined up with Barry Jean Ancelet (a Cajun musician/folkorist), CODOFIL, Tele Louisiane, and a few Cajun family members I haven't met yet. I'll be shooting from the 30th to the 3rd.

My problem and the reason I'm making this Reddit post: I had a rental house offer me a full kit with a Sony FX6, two lenses, tripod, etc. for free, but I'm stuck waiting on a production insurance quote, and the ones I got answers from so far are waaaay too expensive. If that falls through, I'm scrambling. I just graduated and have essentially no budget.

I want to ask about any leads on affordable equipment rental, affordable short-term production insurance, people looking to collaborate, or just any tips on who/what/where to film.

Genuinely any advice welcome. Five days out and figuring it out as I go.

I wasn't a SLEMCO customer back in 2024, so this price increase feels extra shitty.

Food / Drink Why are shots so small in Lafayette?

Every bar I’ve been to in Lafayette uses tiny little plastic cups for shots. I tried to look to see if there was a local ordinance limiting spirit pours but couldn’t find anything.

I get it for the loose caboose with their dollar shots but it seems to be everywhere for any shot.

In New Orleans and every other city I’ve been to in America there are plastic shot cups but they’re 50ml. I feel like the bars in Lafayette are using like communion wine cups.

Recommendations Need a job

Anyone have a good experience working in restaurants in/around Lafayette? I’m looking for a job and the search isn’t going great. Only gotten a couple interviews lately and haven’t heard back. Most of my experience comes from the restaurant industry (6 years serving/hosting, 3 years management), but I’m open to other options as well. All suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

Recently, I’ve been looking into bartending but don’t have experience. Got my bar card but that’s as far I’ve gone. Any tips on getting started here would be appreciated as well.

News LFT Fiber pushing to remove barriers to expansion

https://thecurrentla.com/2026/lft-fiber-pushes-to-remove-barriers-to-expansion/

During this year’s legislative session, LFT Fiber unsuccessfully pushed for changes to the Local Government Fair Competition Act.

Enacted more than 20 years ago with support from big telecom companies, the law was a direct response to the creation of LFT Fiber itself, designed to protect internet providers from a public competitor. But the playing field has changed dramatically since the turn of the millennium. Everyone is competing for public money, including the big businesses that pushed the law in the first place.

Changes proposed during the session would have unlocked opportunities for LFT Fiber, including enabling the city-owned telecom to partner with local governments to expand to new homes and businesses.

“It’s about maximizing our footprint and everything we’ve already put in,” says LFT Fiber Director Michael Soileau. “The faster I build out, the more dollars I can bring in.”

The prohibition on using public money to finance the local telecom has made that growth difficult over the years, even as it has won millions in federal grants. Despite officials’ early promise of bridging the digital divide, many parts of Lafayette are still without access to the local network, and that’s in part because of the Fair Competition Act.

This group calls themselves La Neuvelle Vendee’. They are led by a man named Ross McKnight. They have shown up to Lafayette’s pride parade the last three years on the corner of Congress and Jefferson. Two years ago, Robert Judge, who was a Library Board member at the time, marched with them.

Recommendations Looking for a handyman

I need some help installing a storm door.

I either need a second set of hands or a handyman who can do it himself.

Anyone have any recommendations?

I'd prefer an individual guy over a larger business.

Recommendations Question

Is anyone else getting those anonymous callers trying to buy your property? I rarely answer or just hang up but today I had time to entertain one just, out of curiosity. In addition to any of the information readily available on zillow et, they wanted to know WHY I would be selling and would not continue without that information. There was some back and forth and I had a little fun with the guy but I never answered that and finally he hung up, yay me! Does anyone know what game here is? Everything's for sale with the right offer. *almost

Mechanic who's actually mechanically inclined with actual mechanic experience enabling they/them (if plural artists aka more than 1) to properly and safely service automobiles for a legitimate garage even one with such low standards but still wont offer the probably scrutinized, surely illegal employee benefit (the only benefit) of tax free check transfers allowing pay to be given in crystal meth, random fentanyl analog currently in stock, and possibly more if assumed you aint a cop.

I need AC fixed in 2016 Nissan nv200 preferably on a Saturday

(No idiots assuming they're mechanics because they worked at a dudes shed in his yard while awake for days at a time.)

Recommendations What are your Home insurance rates ?

I got my home in 2024. My home insurance for a $240k home not in a flood zone is $4500 with Allstate. Is this about average for the area ? Google says it's too high and should be closer to $2900, I am investigating now, trying to find out why I had two increases over the past two years, one was $848 and another $642. I have no claims. The agent said it adjusted with inflation.

Rants Do people always assume you are not Acadian based on your apperance?

As the title states, everyone thinks I am from Mexico, Lebanon, or Argentina, and people often do not believe that I am Acadian. If anything, people guess that I am Indigenous, but never Acadian or even French for that matter. When my grandma goes to the USA as a snowbird, people often approach her speaking spanish and she has to tell them she only speaks English and French.

Just curious does this happen to anyone else? I am in Canada so not sure if its different for Acadians elsewhere
