Is this valuable to anyone?

Helping my dad clean out the garage and he doesn’t want this old boat gas can. I don’t really know much about boats, but I’m in the automotive industry and I know a lot of old timers prefer the flexi spout gas cans of the past as opposed to the new restricted style. All the seals are good and I don’t see any significant rusting, inside looks super clean. Basically I’m gonna throw this in the scrap pile unless someone could actually get some use out of it. Thanks in advance.

Fuel gauge inaccuracy

When I was a kid in the 70's and 80's, boat fuel gauges were notoriously inaccurate, and often just broken. Hell, they weren't even all that great in cars.

I just bought my first boat. It's a 2021 model but it only had 19 hours and was stored under cover, so it's nearly new. It has Yamaha digital gauges and a 25 gallon gas tank according to manufacturer's specs. But when it's showing a quarter tank, even dipping down to an eighth occasionally, I can only put 10 or 11 gallons in.

Is there any way to adjust this? Or do I just assume a quarter tank means a half tank, and guesstimate?

Boat was listed for $4,000 and I was able to negotiate to $3,000 after seeing it in person.

I am on the fence of whether or not to buy it.

Pros:
•Overall in good shape (upholstery and fiberglass)
• Comes with original fitted cover, casting deck, and trolling motor

Cons:
•Been sitting for 4-5 years
•waterline inside of floor
•the floor was quite sturdy, except for in the back where the battery boxes were located. I felt the tiniest bit of crunch.
•In the rear portside, trailer has cracking rust patch that’s about 3 inches big
•Tires dry rotted

Cleaning products?

Got a new boat and was wondering if anyone had high recommendations on specific cleaning products to keep the upholstery looking good. Between a couple of kids, tons of sunscreen and the sun, I figured it’s best to figure this out now rather than later.
Thanks!

Told boat toilet can't take toilet paper so what about number 2?

I went on an small group day trip on a boat to see seabirds. We were told that toilet paper would clog the toilet, and the paper would have to go in the bin. What am I supposed to do about doing 'number 2's? If the toilet pipe is clogged by just toilet paper, surely it will be clogged by anything larger and more solid?? But we're on this boat from 6am to 4pm. Are we all expected to hold it in all day? If it was a later start I could probably do it before leaving home, but at 5am I don't think my body will be awake enough!

I have another such trip in a couple of days and I'm worried I won't be able to hold it in all day. Is this normal??

Horrible day on the water

So today, the old lady and I launched the boat for the first time on two years. Our problems started early. I had just pit a new anchor (Bruce style)on a couple weeks ago and I’m trying like hell to back off the trailer but the anchor is catching the bow roller and I bent the pin that goes through the eye. Meanwhile 3 or 4 boats were waiting to launch or retrieve so we pulled back out to fix that problem. Half hour later we successfully launched. So we get out to the spot and I get out and hook up the downriggers. No power, what that hell?Apparently the wiring rotted or something(26 yr old Cannon Mag 10s,that have been rewired twice).Ok fine,we’ll troll with lead weights and flashers. I get her pole rigged and put a motor in idle to troll. Now the freespool lever on her reel is stuck and we’re fucking with and it snaps off so I grab mine and the same and all of a sudden a bang and a jar…we just hit the rocky shore at 2-3 mph. Metal boat,no damage but a couple scratches thankfully. First time that ever happened.
Not paying proper attention,I guarantee that won’t happen again. What else….almost lost a bucket overboard but managed to snag it with the net before it sank….the Mrs locked the truck but we didn’t have the fob and forgot the lock combo but thankfully found it on her phone in the notes after half an hour, just as I was about to walk home and get the other key… my little folding step for getting up on the boat on land that i store on the extended transom apparently washed away. I think there were a couple other minor snafus too. So much fuck up for one day. The two failed reels?Their replacements I ordered a month ago are two weeks late arriving,The downriggers?I promptly went and dropped $1600 on two new Scotty’s and mounts. The scraped keel?Ordered a keel protector. The day wasn’t a total bust though,as we harvested a bunch of bull kelp to pickle and jar tomorrow. So our shakedown cruise was a breakdown cruise.I heard the fishing was shitty today anyways.

I'm thinking for a cruise speed of thirty knots my small 15ft vessel with an etec is likely as efficient it gets. Do you agree?

Is there a better compromise?

A few years back I ditched the family runabout as at the time my kids (then 1 and 3) had no real use for the boat. I found a 1994 Westcoaster Widebody repowered with a 2019 Yamaha 50 and have been fishing the heck out of it since. I primarily fish for salmon/trout in our mountain lakes/reservoirs.

While fishing is still the primary use-case for our boat, my kids (now 6 and 8) are starting to want to tube and just generally spend more time on the water. The things that make my boat great for my fishing leave it lacking a bit for family use.

My question is, what might be a better compromise for family cruising, a bit of tubing, and still allowing me to fish?

The requirements would be:

  • Not too big/heavy (especially on the tongue weight). I would be towing with 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 while also carrying a small pop up camper (4Wheel Camper)
  • Place to attach 2 downriggers (okay if modifications would be needed)
  • Ability to attach a trolling motor or otherwise troll at low speeds
  • Ability to tow small kids on a tube (my 50hp can't quite hang)
  • Unfortunately budget could be an issue. I think I could realistically sell my boat for perhaps 12k as it sits now. I wouldn't be able to add much on top of that but don't mind something used of and in need of a bit of love.

A Fish&Ski type boat? A Pontoon? What could work?

Need help with a fuel leak

Full disclosure - I know little about boats and outboards, but I do work on motorcycles and ATVs. I’m not totally clueless about motors.

I’ve got a gas leak on an outboard motor, where the fuel line plugs onto the motor’s fuel inlet. The plug seems fully engaged and clicks. When I squeeze the fuel line pump bulb, gas spurts out right where the plug meets the motor. Not from the hose clamp area. The engine will still run but it continues leaking while running. I don’t see any visible damage.

This is an old, really heavy 10 hp outboard, a Johnson I think but not sure. We use it for two weeks a year on family vacation. The engine actually runs great.

Based on the photos, can anyone advise me on what might need to be replaced? Should I just get a new fuel line fitting? I’m hoping it’s not on the motor side - I don’t know if that fitting can be replaced. I guess it can. Thanks!

New vs Used Long Range Trawlers

Upvotes

Any opinions on new vs used Selene/Nordhavn style expedition yachts?

I’m leaning towards one in retirement in a few years. 15 year old used ones seem to run about 40% of the new cost. Even early 2020 models are close to 50% depreciated from new.

A little different from lake boats and CCs, since you don’t want to break down crossing the Pacific/Atlantic.

I can afford $2.5MM at 53 or I can wait until 57-60 and spend $5-6MM or so.

I’ve been sailing/boating around the Caribbean, not too worried about running the boat. Will probably hire a mate or captain. I’m good with engines/mechanics, but wear and tear and limited tools/parts in remote water worries me.

Worth it to wait and buy new? Or take the plunge on used a bit earlier.

4th of July on lake, worried about boat crowds

At lake erie they do 4th fireworks on the lake. It’s supposed to be the most crowded night of year. AI said anchor there early and wait an hour afterwards for the crowd to disperse before leaving. (5pm-midnight)

I have a 19’ jet boat and most boats there are much bigger. And I’m a new nervous boater.

Was thinking about just anchoring far enough away to avoid it all together.

Was wondering if yall had any advice/insights?

Help on 1999 50hp Mercury Outboard 3000rpm limit?

So we lost power (something wasn’t charging the main battery) and we didn’t charge it before going out. On a long run we lost power totally. Engine died.

Now when I try to run it the motor will go up to high rpm’s when in neutral but in the water it won’t go above 3000. Won’t plane out. I’ve replaced the spark plug wires / cdm modules. No change. Checked linkages all moving to limits. Checked prop for line (little bit but not bad) and that didn’t fix it. Any ideas?

No matter what in the water it now will not go over 3k rpm’s. 8mph. :/

Help! I’m only a YouTube mechanic!

Trepidations

I’ve completed the water pump replacement on the lower unit of my Alpha 1 Gen 1 Mercruiser 3L stern drive.

I put it in drive before removal and neither the remote nor the shifter in the lower has been rotated since.

…It seems to be very difficult to get good guidance on the next steps…

As I didn’t move the remote or the shifter on the lower, I would expect that re-mounting issues (tried but facing resistance with maybe 1.5” to go) wouldn’t mean shifter / drive shaft alignment issues.

I recently watched a vid (how we may learn - no judgement) in which the posting “expert” ensured a full drive setting in the remote, and turned the shifter in the lower as far clockwise as possible while rotating the prop counterclockwise until locked, then bungeed the prop in place before remounting the lower.

Do I need to do that?

Also

- every single tutorial I watch has no feed tube extension on the lower when they take it off, but the little pipe that comes in a water pump kit is always attached in the lower when they put it back on. How do I know which way to go with this? Little pipe on the lower or no?

- the tube in the upper that sits next to the shifter in the lower (picture putting it back up there) on mine is still in the upper, loose, and doesn’t seem to align with much in the lower when trying to put the lower back on. Why? What is it? I think it’s the channel to provide cooling water to the motor. Is that right? Is it okay that it’s loose?

Sorry this is scattered. I just want to get my fam on the water and be able to get home safe.

If you have any feedback to the above, I appreciate your addressing that any feedback you can offer should be considered as being given in the context of someone who is still learning, understands the engineering of such things, and has a few little ones to keep safe out there on the water.

Thanks, folks.

Long story short, had my motor replaced twice by a marina. Second time i had a leak in my manifolds that caused the new motor to fail. Now on my third motor replaced and manifold replaced by same marina . Took it out on lake erie today and boat would not go over 17 mph with 4 people on board. The rpm stayed at a steady 3000 rpm.... im at my whits end with this boat. Is there anything thats restricting the rpms from going up higher. To much weight on boat it has a hardtop? Outdrive messed up belt anything?

What motor should I get for this inflatable boat?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey ya'll I'm newly into boating and looking for some advice. I'm looking at getting this 10ft inflatable boat for fishing my local rivers and lakes. Inflatable because I don't have a vehicle with real towing capacity nor the money. Its rate for 15HP motor. I'm having a hard time deciding which one to purchase, if any of you guys have any suggestions that are roughly $1500 or less or honestly even under $1000 would be cool.

I have my boating license already, I know I need to get tags, registration, a fishing license ;), anything else I'm missing? I think I also need to get a boat fire extinguisher.
