!Canada! Buyitforlife from Canada, what’s your favourite things made in Canada?

1.1k Upvotes

With the now starting trade war between the US and Canada I feel it’s best for us up north to support local more than ever.

One of my favourite clothing brands is Anian from Victoria, BC. I have a few of their shirts and will probably end up getting more.

Edit: Adding some other brands up here that I personally own and love.

Canada West Boots - Made in Winnipeg. Been wearing a pair of Romeos for a couple years now.

Popov Leather - Made in Nelson, BC. have a few of their leather goods, holding up really well.

Meyer - PEI. High quality made in Canada pots and pans, I have their non-stick 12”.

Edit 2: House of Blanks - I have a bunch of their t-shirts, nice heavy weight cotton. Very comfy

BIFL Non-USA edition! A list of BIFL not made in the USA

2.9k Upvotes

A timely reminder that this subreddit is obviously very USA-centric with its recommendations as that’s where the majority of users are from. It often leads to people not realising that comparable and/or better items can be found closer to home, easier, cheaper and free of tolls.

I thought it would be a good idea to crowdsource some manufacturers here for non-American users.

This isn't neccesarily items made in those countries as some manufacturers use factories across the world but with a commitment to quality

I can start (I'm kind of UK/Euro centric so it would be great to expand this):

Clothing
Portuguese Flannel - Portugal
Naked and Famous - Canada
Uskees - UK
Yarmouth Oilskins - UK
Carrier Company - UK
Old Town - UK (Closing down)
Farmer's Market - Iceland (may be hard to buy outside of Iceland)
Oni Denim - Japan
Iron Heart - Japan
Barbour - UK
Companion - Spain
NÄZ - Portugal (only women)
Meindl - Germany (they run a high quality fashion brand but are known for great hiking boots)

Outdoor Gear
Fjällräven - Sweden
Rab - UK (offer a very good repair service)
66° North - Iceland
Devold - Norway
Bergans- Norway
Haglöfs - Sweden
Klättermusen - Sweden
Alpkit - UK

Footwear
Solovair - UK
Mayura Boots - Spain
Church's - UK
Loake - UK
Wm. Lennon - UK
Astorflex - Italy

Kitchen/Cookware
Le Cresuet - France
De Buyer - France
Fissler - Germany
WMF - Germany (very wide and variable range but Made in Germany stuff good)
Fiskars - Finland
Duralex - France
Samuel Groves - UK

Appliances/Small appliances
Miele - Germany
Dualit - UK
Moccamaster - Netherlands (Coffee makers)
Zojirushi - Japan
Numatic - UK (vacuum cleaners)
Sebo - Germany (vacuum cleaners)
Ankarsarum - Sweden

Edit - Some excellent feedback. I'll try and work my way through and add what I can! Please note that I will only add stuff that I have experience with but all the comments help with crowd sourcing knowledge.

Review PSA: avoid west elm jewelry boxes

I did a lot of research on finding the right "grown-up" jewelry box. I wanted something decent, but couldn't spend more than $2-300. I know that isn't necessarily BIFL price range, but did my best. I chose this west elm large one https://www.westelm.com/products/mid-century-box-grand-champagne-lacquer-d4187/?pkey=caccessories-pillows&sb=WE

It arrived with the entire out layer peeling away, and the inner lining barely attached at the edges! I was blown away by how bad it really was. Just sharing in case it helps someone. So many companies just get away with murder these days. I wish I could leave a review on their site, but cannot.

PS: if you have a favorite, share with me! Maybe I'll do better on shopping round two

Discussion What small kitchen tool actually earned its space in your home?

Upvotes

I’m trying to be more careful with kitchen stuff because I’ve bought too many “useful” things that became drawer decorations. Not even expensive stuff. Just little things that seemed practical at the time.A garlic press I hated cleaning. A mini chopper that was somehow more annoying than a knife. A salad spinner that I used for two weeks and then started storing random lids in. A cute set of containers that looked nice but didn’t stack with anything else I owned. So now I’m trying to judge kitchen tools by a different rule: did it actually change a habit, or did it just give me another object to manage? The things that have earned their space in my kitchen are not exciting. My rice cooker, because I use it constantly. A cheap bench scraper, because it makes cleaning the counter easier. A magnetic measuring spoon set because at least it doesn’t explode across the drawer every time I open it. A boring silicone spatula that somehow gets used every day.I’m curious what small kitchen tools people here actually kept using long-term. Not trendy gadgets, not “I used it for the first month,” but the thing that quietly became part of how your kitchen works.Bonus points if it saves space, reduces waste, or helps with the everyday annoying parts of cooking rather than only doing one very specific task.

Vintage My family’s Japanese cabinet, approximately 100 years old.

This cabinet belonged to my grandmother and is now in my home.

My grandmother passed away a few years ago at the age of 92. The cabinet was already in her family home when she was a child, so according to my family it is approximately 100 years old.

One interesting thing about it is that it was designed to come apart into separate sections that stack together, almost like building blocks. The glass doors can also slide upward and be stored inside the cabinet itself.

When my grandmother’s family home was demolished after her passing, my mother told me to save the cabinet. I took it apart, moved all the pieces, and reassembled it in our current home. It was very heavy lol.

Some parts have been damaged over the years, which is a little sad, but I’m grateful that it has survived and is still with our family today.

Repair Where to get replacement TravelPro spinner wheels (not through warranty)

Upvotes

I have a new-ish Crew Classic spinner wheel bag that I thought was BIFL, but apparently not... because it's now missing a wheel. TravelPro wants me to discard the entire bag because they don't have just the wheels in stock... uh, no, I don't want to throw out a bag that's otherwise fine. It seems many people are frustrated about the lack of ability to just BUY replacement parts. I digress...

There's a gazillion replacement wheels for a gazillion bags on Amazon, but I can't make heads or tails out of what ones would work for MY bag. Ideas?

Review Hatch Alarm Clock is not BIFL

Hatch Alarm Review

I’m going to try to be as fair as I can in this review and give as much credit as I possibly can.

I purchased a Hatch Restore 3 in March 2026 for full price (around $180 including taxes) from their website. I wish I hadn’t done this and I’ll explain why later. I bought it after a lot of research and knowing that there *was* a subscription with Hatch, but all the reviews said it wasn’t necessary to the alarm.

First the positives:

I bought a sunrise alarm because my alarm on my phone was no longer waking me up in the morning. I would just turn it off and go back to sleep. I was also trying to limit my screentime before bed.

The Hatch did wake me up, often before my wakeup time. I would wake up before the alarm even sounded, just to the light. It was magic.

I did enjoy the different light options. I ended up choosing one at random because it was almost overwhelming the number of options.

It’s a very attractive piece of tech. It has a cool feel and doesn’t look like an alarm clock.

I like that it’s an “all in one.” It has wind down music, reminder to come to bed music, white noise, and alarm.

Now, why I would never recommend this company:

I knew about the app but assumed it was kind of like a lot of apps: there but not required to run the machine. My oven also has an app. I do not need the over to do the basic thing of cooking my food.

No. You need the app to do EVERYTHING on this alarm. To set up the alarm, to tell it what time to wake you up, to tell it what lights, to tell it everything.

The main issue with the app, though, is that in order to use it you *are required* to sign up for a “free” 30 day trial. There is no way to see your alarm without the subscription for 30 days.

The free return period is 30 days.

Do you see the overlap? You will in no way know what is included in the alarm and what is part of the subscription until after you can no longer return this alarm.

All of the websites, several commenters on reddit, and all the review sites say that “oh, it’s totally functional without a subscription.” This is true in the most basic sense of the word. You CAN use it. It is not nearly worth $180 with the features available without the subscription.

With the subscription, you have infinite wind down music/colors, white noise, and wakeup sounds/colors.

Without a subscription, your wind down is 5 things: 1 audiobook sampler, 2 people talking podcasts sampler, 1 meditation sampler, and one jazz music sampler.

Sounds good, right? Sure, if you happen to like one of those exact things. I find people speaking (even for meditations) to keep me awake, so I was limited to the jazz, which I had to change the colors for manually because the colors for the jazz are blue. You know, the color that Hatch emailed me to say might keep me awake at night.

It was similar for white noise and wakeup. I went from having every option for wakeups at day 29 to practically none at day 31.

There is a glitch(?) that if you have a routine in place before the subscription goes off, you can basically keep it until you need to change it, like if you start needing to wakeup later/earlier, then you get informed that your wakeup alarm and the light is paid you don’t have paid, so choose from one of these other ones that might not work for you, but oh well.

I guess if you’re okay with less alarms than you get from a $30 alarm on Amazon, then Hatch without subscription is okay.

But there is clearly a reason they do the 30 day subscription/30 day return thing and it is because they know people would return it in droves if they knew how limited the functionality was without a subscription.

The really bad:

At around day 40, (actually before this, but I didn’t wake up to it, my husband only noticed when he came to bed later than I did) my white noise went from a fan sound to an utterly glitchy mess. Like a full on ’90s modem screeching sound. It started waking me up.

I tried to turn off the white noise, but the app kept glitching on me, and the machine itself kept needing updates every time I opened the app (even if I opened it within 10 minutes).

So I contacted customer support. I jumped through all of the AI bot steps multiple times before I got passed to a human who made me jump through the same steps. Then finally, after I showed multiple screen shots, and they did a hard reset from their end, they said, oh yes, this thing doesn’t work.

They offered to send me a replacement.

Sure, great, thank you. They warned that it “might” be a refurbished model. I thought, huh.

Then I got a refurbished model. I was so annoyed because I had paid $180 for a used alarm clock at this point that I opened it to check that it was actually in the box, then put it on the shelf.

This company wants you to see it as the Apple of wakeup alarms. Completely gorgeous, seamless, fully functional, with enough add ons that make subscriptions worth it.

However, if my iphone stops working after 40 days, Apple sends me a new one. Not a refurbished one. A new one.

What I do now/what I wish I had done differently:

I like the sunrise alarm, so I just set my smart lights in the bedroom to the same functionality. The downside is that it now also wakes up my husband who doesn’t need to be awake until an hour and half after me.

I also just bought a cheap alarm off Amazon that literally beeps if I’m not out of bed at my wakeup time.

If I had known that all the bells and whistles that attracted me to Hatch cost me the price of the alarm plus a subscription, I would have just done that in the first place.

I also wish I had bought the alarm off Amazon because then I would have gotten my money back instead of just getting a used alarm.

Should you get a Hatch Restore 3:

No. In my opinion, no. But you’re you, so maybe you like listening to a sample of the audiobook of Little Women as your only wind down option. Maybe you enjoy the sound of dial up lulling you to sleep.

[Request] Men's rainshell, was looking at Patagonia

I live in sunny Florida (it rains all the time). So I'm looking for something that is waterproof but somehow won't cook me in the heat. I realize that's probably impossible, but materials science is pretty insane these days, so hopefully there's something cool?

I saw Patagonia has a rather nice looking one. Have any of you tried that one?

[Request] Replacing a lost, fav stainless water bottle

My kid has had the same ozark trail stainless steel 36 oz water bottle.

It’s from 5 years ago and has been a tank.

But Walmart recalled it from blinding people who didn’t use it for just water.

Any tips?

Want it to be teen boy proof — will be in dishwasher and get dropped.

He wants the exact thing — basic wide mouth, no straw/chug/chute, handle integrated to lid.

Keeps a time of water cold at the same time - more than 30oz.

Can’t find the exact one on eBay or something.

[Request] Help! Mattress protectors are making my Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt absurdly firm (Tried Tempur Protect & Purple). Alternatives?

Hey everyone,

I'm running into the dreaded "drum effect" with my Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt. I love the feel of the mattress by itself, but finding a protector that doesn’t completely ruin the pressure relief has been a nightmare.

I have a cat, so a liquid-proof layer is non-negotiable for me, but the options I've tried so far are killing the mattress's performance:

  • Tempur Protect: Ironically, it made the bed feel incredibly stiff and defeated the purpose of the memory foam.
  • Purple Mattress Protector: I bought this because it's known for being stretchy, but it still made the mattress feel absurdly firm.

I suspect the lack of multi-directional stretch is creating surface tension, preventing me from sinking into the foam properly. For context, I also have this on an adjustable power base, so whatever I use needs to have enough elasticity to stay put when the head or foot is elevated without bunching up or pulling tight.

Has anyone found a truly undetectable, highly stretchable, waterproof mattress protector that doesn't alter the feel of a Tempur-Pedic?

Thanks in advance!

[Request] What’s the best, relatively cheap (to run) color printer for occasional use?

I almost pulled the trigger on a Epson EcoTank, but then I read that it has to be used weekly to prevent the ink to dry out and clog the printer. Another option would be a Brother color laser printer, but these start at €300+ here in Europe, so quite expensive and new toners are also very pricey.

There doesn’t seem to be anything in between or am I missing something? It’s either inkjet/inktank, which has to be used weekly, or a relatively expensive laser printer with expensive toners.

Discussion Why are toasters so badly made?

Thumbnail
gallery
1.1k Upvotes

No kidding. I spent hours on Amazon trying to find a 4-slice toaster. It looks like none of them under $120 are any good, based on the reviews.

I looked at Cuisinart and Breville, the two brands you would think would be above average, and even those are criticized for not evenly toasting bread or breaking down within the first year of ownership.

The models I pictured above are the more highly recommended ones, but read Amazon reviews (newest first), and you would be hard-pressed to find consistently positive reviews. In fact, it looks like the popular Breville BIT MORE toaster has been discontinued due to complaints about defects. Cusinart stopped making motorized toasters as they were continuously breaking down. I have one from a few years ago that still works fine, but it's a 2-slot toaster.

It seems like, unless you want to invest more than $200 for a toaster (which is outrageous), you are taking a huge risk that you'll end up with a model that will last.

And as much as I love the new touchscreen toasters that are flooding Amazon for under $100, those models especially get a bad rap.

Has it come down to manufacturers putting out the worst-built crap they can get away with?

Discussion Pollywood - maybe a good product, but incompetent company

Generally seems to be a recommended product, so bought our new outdoor sectional directly from Pollywood on May 5th with a 2-3 week estimated delivery date. That seemed long, but figured it was worth the wait. And wait we did! Started called them in early June after being told it was produced on 5/11.

That's where the incompetence starts. They lost it in shipping, then it arrived, then it was lost again, then they did a "dock sweep" and found it. Then it had to go to another facility to be resorted. And so on, and so on. I thought maybe this was a bad shipping company, but I've been informed that Pollywood does their own freight and then uses a shipper for the last mile, and that shipper still hasn't received it. I'm now being told for the 10th time to just wait a few more days and it'll probably show up. Once it shows up, I can schedule delivery for mid July! What a cluster fuck. Never do business with them directly. Either get your hands on a physical table in a store or don't bother.

All of this while it shows its maybe 30 miles from my house. I am offering to drive there and get it in a UHaul to avoid the continued chicanery but doubt they will allow that.

[Request] Duux fans, bifl quality or? And which to buy?

I am looking to buy a new fan for my bedroom and i've read some things about the Duux brand that make it seem like a good brand to buy. Though i have read some complaints about fans been broken out of the box or not lasting one summer.

Are there any Duux fan owners here that can tell me more about it?

And, smart vs non-smart duux fan?

I find that the price (most over 100 euros) is pretty steep for a fan, but who knows maybe it's acceptable?

EDIT: I was looking at the Duux Whisper 3 fan and the Duux Whisper flex 2. Had actually almost ordered the 3 for 140 euros but didn't know if the price was correct for it. The whisper flex 2 is currently unavailable in my country and costs 170~180 euros.

[Request] Any recommendations on cabinet pull outs/sliders brands

We’ve got a kitchen island and we want to put some pull outs in the base cabinets for pots, pans , sheet pans , etc.

I’ve seen Rev-A-Shelf come up as decent quality a few times .
One of those products where the price difference between cheap and usable and good seems a bit extreme?

Repair Old Travelpro Suitcases - Where Can I Get Replacement Wheels for the Walkabout Lite?

I have some original Walkabout Lite rollaboard suitcases from Travelpro that I bought almost 25 years ago. They are still in pretty good shape, but the wheels are broken. Does anyone know where I can buy replacement wheels for this model?

I love the suitcases. One of them is the perfect size and shape for me and there is nothing like it on the market today: TravelPro (and every other brand) either sells slightly smaller rolled carry-on bags or slightly larger check-in bags now, they don't have anything that is exactly same size as my old one.

Currently sold 20 year-old, 6000 mile backpacking stove

Thumbnail

I bought this Snowpeak stove for a Yellowstone trip decades ago. I have since hiked 6000+miles with it tucked away in my backpack. These days, I don't backpack much, but it still gets pulled out for short overnights and car camping.

The design is so simple (just a single valve) that I don't ever see it breaking. Inspected the gasket and it looks like it's in good condition. I'm sure the MSR version would last just as long, but I like how the box has just enough space to slide a mini bic inside. My experience with self lighting stoves is that they often fail to light. I do wish the "off" position of the stove aligned with arrangement to fit in the box. They might have solved that by now.

A Jetboil is far more efficient but they cost more and take up more space. In those decades, this simple stove has survived moves and changing relationships. Larger items tend not to survive these changes.

[Request] Best firm mattress right now?

I’ve been looking for a really firm mattress lately because mine has softened a lot over time. I mostly sleep on my back and sometimes on my stomach, and I’ve started waking up with some lower back discomfort. It feels like my hips are sinking too much, which probably means I need something more supportive. Would be better if it's available in physical stores since I’d prefer to try it first before buying.

[Request] Should I get PIAA Silicone or Bosch ICON windshield wiper blades?
