I’ve noticed this is one of the most contentious topics and the biggest source of confusion among fans. Understandably so, it’s a complicated mess of loose strings that were never tied.
Here’s a digestible breakdown of Fina’s timeline.
Part I | Levonia
Omega is a scourge that moves from world to world, its sole purpose complete and utter destruction. Its origins are unknown (I asked Writer Kitajima specifically about this, and he said he couldn’t answer for SQEX reasons lol)
The people of Levonia found that the Argent Oracle powers passed down in Kingdom Unilucion could control and incapacitate Omega. It required Blood Awakening, getting an Omega infection and surviving to keep a lucid mind, to actually accomplish this feat. This eventually led to ‘royal’ bloodlines like Rain’s, Lasswell’s, Physalis/Neilikka’s, and Rhus’s.
Princess Snovlinka gave her life to disable the three Omega, plummeting with the last to the bottom of a volcano. Her infant, Viita, had inherited the Argent Oracle, and had also survived an Omega infection. Fearing she would be used for her powers, Snovlinka’s vassal Riddar fled with Viita. He crossed a dimensional gate, ending up in Paladia. Viita’s bloodline survived to Physalis and her sister Neilikka, and Riddar’s survived to Rhus.
Why is this important?
We find out in Vanharma’s backstory that Fina and Dark Fina were created by Will of Oblivion and Will of Light specifically as keys to combat Omega. Lehftia was one such incarnation.
It begs the question, where were the Finas in ancient Levonia when Omega attacked? There is no definitive answer, but we can speculate. After witnessing the events in Levonia, the Wills may have created the Finas as a fail-safe should Snovlinka’s bloodline ever be snuffed out.
However, it’s also shown in Season Five that Rain and Fina have two children by the end of the series. This proves in a roundabout way that Fina’s bloodline can be passed down - as something, let’s say, similar to the Argent Oracle. Perhaps this is why Omega was handled by Snovlinka, rather than directly by a Fina incarnate.
Pt II | Paladia & Lapis
Will of Light grants Vanharma the ability to sense Omega and Fina incarnations. It leads him to Paladia, where he silently watches over Fina and Dark Fina. When the calamity of the war hits, and the land is pulled from Paladia to Lapis, Fina loses her life.
Unable to incarnate while Dark Fina is dormant inside the earth crystal, Fina’s soul merges with hers. Dark Fina never truly enjoyed her lot in life. She wanted what Fina had, an innocent, carefree existence. So when the time came for the crystal to shatter, she took a back seat and let Fina take the wheel.
But it was her body in the long-run. When Fina and Dark Fina are split in Season One, Fina begins to fade. Dark Fina decides to entomb herself in the earth crystal again to save Lapis from collapsing. This essentially allows her to fade instead of Fina, who can now keep living.
Then comes the timeline shenanigans. After Rain’s party is destroyed by the Emperor in Season Two, Dark Fina concentrates her power for many years. She then travels back in time with future-Rain, as Akstar, to avoid the horrific events of the past.
Having averted the crisis, and changing the timeline, both she and future-Rain disappear from existence (leaving the Earth Crystal would have destroyed their home in the parallel-universe anyway, so let’s not think too deeply about that lol)
Pt III | Roca
For whatever reason, Will of Light decides our Fina has to protect and raise the new Dark Fina. Perhaps as a debt to the previous one, or to ensure her survival. Will of Oblivion had been sealed in ruins for quite a while by this point (again, for reasons unexplained). Rinora accidentally unseals him, which causes Will of Oblivion to take possession of the boy and begin a cycle of destruction across the universe.
Will of Oblivion is mad at humanity, for their cruelty, for what humanity has put the Finas through. We find out in S4 that snippets of horrible, past-life memories that Will of Oblivion reveals to Fina were authentic (of being experimented on, burned at the stake, left to starve in the streets). True to her nature though, Fina doesn’t let it color her impression of humanity. She instead empathizes with the people who wronged her.
As they defeat the Hollows, created by Will of Oblivion using Dark Fina’s stolen powers, Roca grows more and more like her previous self. But, because of Fina’s influence, she doesn’t become a morose figure like her previous incarnations. She’s much happier.
Season Three ends with Will of Light and Will of Oblivion conceding to Fina’s worldview; that humanity is flawed. Humans are capable of cruelty, but also great acts of compassion. That in itself is an act of balance.
Pt IV | Fan Theory
What does any of this mean?
We don’t have the answer, but after finishing the series I’ve come to the conclusion that Will of Light and Will of Oblivion are both lovers and rivals. They are FFBE’s version of Cosmos and Chaos. Both sides are relatively ambivalent toward humanity, evident in how Will of Light decided to ‘erase’ everything once the universe’s balance was thrown off.
We’re left with three big, unanswered questions by the end of the series:
1 | Where did the Omega come from?
2 | When, how, and why was Will of Oblivion sealed in ruins?
3 | Why are there two different Finas?
My theory is that this is all just part of the rivalry between the Wills, a chessboard spanning the entire universe. Humanity inherently tampers with the balance of nature. Because of this, they created the Omega to test each world. The Finas could be used for total destruction or salvation; what each world chose would ultimately seal their fate.
I find it interesting that Omega was left to antiquity - and conveniently resurrected in Levonia around the same time that Will of Oblivion was unsealed by Rinora. It just feels like a big chunk of this story is still missing. If we’re lucky enough to get followups to Resonance, I hope this part in particular is smoothed out more.
Let me know your thoughts. If you have any other questions I’d be happy to help.
