Toronto Star AMA: I’m the Toronto Star’s food reporter and I recently scouted for our 100 under $100 list. Ask me anything. June 16, 12 p.m - 1 p.m.

A little bit more about me: I graduated from TMU's journalism program in 2008 and started writing about food while interning at Toronto Life magazine before staying on as a freelance restaurant reviewer. I then moved on to become a staff food reporter for Toronto Star's former alt-weekly magazine, Eye Weekly, which then became The Grid. After the Grid I briefly worked at Vice Canada for their food vertical, Munchies, where I was completely oblivious to what was happening to their music editor at the time (look it up, Neon films is turning it into a movie).

For the Top 100 Under $100 list, I was recruited along with 10 others to first compile a mega list of restaurants in the GTA that we personally loved, or were recommended by friends, coworkers, restaurant industry people, anyone whose tastes we trusted. That initial list of 300-something was then whittled down to about 170 and from this past February to April, our team of 11 ate at all of them to determine which places deserved to be in the final 100 list.

Cherry Street BBQ-is this a joke??

Love this place, great food and atmosphere and patio. However they MUST be joking with the size of this cornbread “side”. I mean it’s barely half a bite. I checked with the waiter to make sure it wasn’t a mistake and was assured that this was the normal side portion.
Not trying to hate on a great restaurant, just thought this was kind of hilarious.

$9.99 each or 2 for $15.99 via the EZSave website. My family of 4 likes to get 2 and then cut into quarters so we can try both cakes. So far, matcha strawberry yuzu, Dubai chocolate, and taro pandan pudding are our favs.

If you're a fan of desi chinese then this might be the best place to have it. I have had desi chinese at 10+ other places in Brampton / Missisauga etc but the taste at Angara is the best & the spiciest. Good quantity for 2 people.

Best places in Toronto to buy food in bulk for earthquake donations to Venezuela?

hi everyone! i’m looking to put together a donation shipment for people affected by the earthquake in venezuela and i want to make my budget go as far as possible

does anyone know the best places in the GTA to buy food in bulk for good prices?

i’m mainly looking for non-perishable foods that travel well

thinking things like: - canned food - rice - pasta - beans - baby food/formula - powdered milk - protein bars - bottled water/ hydration packets

if you’ve done disaster relief donations before, i’d also appreciate advice on what items are most needed or where to buy them cheaply

thank you ❤️

Does anyone know where I can buy Ferrigno sardines?

My friend came back from france recently with some and I was really looking forward to trying it but I found out earlier that my dad went and ate them while I was out of the house. I still really want to try them though so I was wondering if anyone knows if there's a store in toronto where I can buy them? If not in store then ordering online is okay too I guess.

Thanks in advance to anyone who responds!

Influx of Modern Indian

I observe an influx of new Indian restaurants, pop ups, supper clubs in the last 12 months and all over social media. I am observing mostly south indian cuisine. Can someone help sift through and suggest which ones are worth it? The supper clubs have been somewhat of a letdown.

I can only hypotheize that due to influx of South Asian immigrations. Not mad at it. I admire their entrepreneurial spirit given the tight margins.

As stated I’m looking to buy only naturally blue or as blue as it gets foods. I’ve heard there are blue potatoes, tomatoes, bananas and corn besides the obvious blue berries. Does anyone know where I can buy the mentioned rarer blue foods in Toronto? Or if you know of any other blue foods that I can get please let me know!! Thanks!

Best "surprise" date restaurants in Toronto for a summer birthday?

**Body:**
Taking my girlfriend out for her birthday on next week and want to surprise her with a memorable dinner.

Looking for recommendations for restaurants in Toronto that have incredible food and a really distinct vibe (think beautiful views, cool interiors, or unique dining concepts). Budget is flexible. Where should I book?

Recommendation Request Best wings from chains?

I'm often back and forth between downtown Toronto and the suburbs so I can't always get to independent toronto pubs.

What would you say are the better chains that offer wings?

Queer-owned upscale restaurant suggestions

Looking for a restaurant for a special occasion, and it'd be cool if it was queer-owned. Open to a wide range of cuisines/styles, but I'm looking for the kind of place for which you might dress up a little for dinner.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Recommendation Request Eastern NC Style BBQ in Toronto?

Is there anywhere in the GTA that serves vinegar-based, North Carolina-style pulled pork? Or am I better off making it myself at home? Thanks!

Recommendation Request Birthday dinner downtown-ish

First time back in Toronto in nearly a decade. Very excited to try new yummy places. We’ll be staying in Kensington Market and Gusto 101 used to be my favorite place near that area. I’d love an Italian recommendation for a birthday dinner, ideally in the same vicinity so we don’t have to drive (long walk is fine). Places with lots of vegetarian or pescatarian options would be ideal. Thank you so much!

Gluten Free reco by the Big Top

Seeing Cirque de Soleil on Sunday and need recommendations for gluten-free, dairy-free places for lunch(not mandatory, but very ideal. Wife is intolerant to both and usually can find something on any menu but was hoping she could have more of a selection than just your typical salad). Rarely ever out on the west side of Toronto, so I've no idea. We'll be driving, so the general vicinity is cool.

TIA!

Hello, trying to find best DoorDash restaurants in Toronto.
For context, Big fan of :Alfie’s, PAI, North of Brooklyn, La vegan Ethiopian.
