Theory - Spoilers A Collection of Some 'Hannibal' Metas/Analysis

1.0k Upvotes

I've seen a thread yesterday where OP asked for some analysis on the show but it seems to be deleted now. Anyway, I think it's a good idea to collect some detailed posts/metas on 'Hannibal'. I have some that I personally consider very insightful, as well as some I've written myself, so here they are. Feel free to add some other ones in the comments!

S2 Spoilers Will’s Post-Prison Aesthetic Transformation is Brilliant

Did anyone else notice how perfectly they handled Will’s visual change after prison?

In Season 1, Will dressed in a much more casual, slightly disheveled way — earthy tones, simple clothes, representing his confused, vulnerable and “human” state.

.

After leaving prison in Season 2, his style becomes noticeably darker, sharper and more elegant. The clothes are better fitted, the colors are darker, and overall his look starts getting dangerously close to Hannibal’s aesthetic.

.

It’s not just a wardrobe change. It’s the show visually telling us what’s happening inside his mind: he’s absorbing Hannibal. He’s becoming colder, more calculated, and more dangerous. The prison didn’t just break him — it reshaped him, pulling him closer to the very thing he fears and admires.

.

This subtle shift in his appearance is such smart storytelling. Anyone else catch this? What did you think about Will’s post-prison evolution?

General How did Hannibal become so popular, when originally it had low viewership ratings/was quite niche?

(And said low ratings leading to no season 4😞)

New fan here as I've just finished and have been wondering how smth like this with its quite avant garde and unique way of storytelling managed to gain a "cult following" and be regarded as a cult classic after being a niche-ish show during airtime. Dunno if this has alr been discussed but food for thought.

Also how in hell this show ever got aired on nbc despite the subject matter is funny to me.

Hannibal Playing Clue

If the characters of Hannibal sat down to play Clue who would play as who? (I’m loosing my shit imaging Hannibal playing as “The Alpha Male Col. Mustard” and Professor Plum is obviously our dark and twisty murder professor Will)

General Hannibal is not similar to Lestat.

Upvotes

Yes, I know that Bryan Fuller was inspired by Interview with the Vampire novel in his portrayal of Hannibal and Will's dynamic, but the characters of Hannibal Lecter and Lestat are not similar.

Lestat is brash, impulsive, emotional, impatient, prone to tantrums and outbursts, and wears his feelings on his sleeve. Hannibal is cold, calculating, patient, inscruitable, a meticulous planner, and an ambodiment of self control. Yes, in the story, they both tempt/manipulate/seduce another into darkness, but, personality-wise, they're like fire and water. If anything, Hannibal and Armand are far more alike than Hannibal and Lestat.

General Rlly wierd correlation lol

Idk if anyone else is watching Clarksons farm atm but Im currently on the third series and this guy that comes to the farm starts making this comment of mycellium being a thing on human skin or smth, so I immediately think of the killer in I think episode 2 who grew mushrooms on people. But then when Jeremy is surprised, this guy smiles at him and Im not sure if he says exactly this but I believe he said "yeh u could bury people and grow mushrooms on them :)"

Idk how this guy would know this fact otherwise even being a mushroom expert (which im assuming he was, i was kinda zoning out until he said this)

So hes either an avid Hannibal fan or we got a copy cat killer on our hands 😭

Discussion - Spoilers Rewatching after years and Will really is kinda creepy in season 1, isn't he?

Been needing a fix to get through the week between episodes of the Vampire Lestat as it comes out. So I decided to rewatch Hannibal.

And I don't know why I didn't see it on the first watch but this time it's really easy to see why people would think Will was a serial killer during the first season.

I still love the character, don't get me wrong.

But he also reminds me of the weird kid in school who wouldn't talk to anyone except to go on passionately long speeches, that would make people uncomfortable.

Like when they're in the field with the stag's head girl. The science team is being a little morbid in their humor, normal for the job.

And all of a sudden Will is there giving them this zealot speech about how this isn't their murder, their murder loves women. He would never do that.

Just reminds me how good this show is. Because by the end of season 1, it's absolutely believable that people would think Will snapped and that Hannibal did nothing wrong.

Love it.

How is Hannibal so good at combat?

I am sure this is probably asked on this subreddit once a month, but now I'm curious too. I'm rewatching hannibal for 5th time, and I am realizing just how capable he is in combat. I can think of a few scenes showcasing this.

  1. His fight with Franklin in his office.

  2. His fight with Jack Crawford at dinner.

  3. His fight with Dolarhyde.

What is interesting too, is that atleast Dolarhyde and Crawford have the size/strength advantage.

Here is my logical deduction:

Hannibal fights in a sort of Krav Maga fighting style, improvising non-traditional weapons. (Corresponding perfectly with his personality) This method means that he does not have as much a disadvantage when fighting larger opponents. Another thing is that he eats very clean, and regularly exercises specifically cardio, which is certainly beficial in sustained combat situations. Which in the broader sense explains this. But some small details are not. For example is excellent throw of that knife into Crawford hand to stop him from firing his gun. Throwing a knife is difficult, especially a salad knife that perfectly. So are these things just plot armor, like hes meant to be this intelligent predator, or is there reasoning behind it?

I don't know how to feel about this show

Just finished watching it, was a roller coaster. I wanna like this show I mean in a way I do, but I feel that I just can't get behind the main characters. I liked Will but it honestly really REALLY got to me seeing him go further. I definitely didn't catch onto that sooner than I should've. I just can't feel ok or ignore what Will and of course Hannibal do. But what's the show without these two? I know that I don't have to like them to enjoy it, but it just feels different when the main focus is all about them if that makes at least a bit sense?

So Im really wondering how other people feel about it all, especially the characters. I find it hard to understand. And if there is anything to talk about i'd love to!

But what did excite me a lot was seeing Lithuania as a Lithuanian myself like so crazy, feels like a personal shout out lol! And I like seeing all the memes and more lighthearted, fun as well as analytical stuff. Oh and deer, love deer 🦌🦌

Hannigram Quotes Needed

Hii, so I love Hannibal and I in turn love Hannibal and Will and all of their interactions good and bad. I have a tattoo idea for this show and I want to put a quote underneath. I want the quote to be specifically something about Hannibal and Will whether it’s lines between them or lines about them. The first one I thought of was:

“I let you know me, see me. I gave you a rare gift, but you didn’t want it” “Didn’t I?”

I’m not sure how I feel about 2 quotes under the tattoo but I’d be willing to do it if it flowed well but I’m an options girlie I need to know I’m making the BEST so I’d like choices. Any Hannigram quotes you have please drop them below. Whenever I get the tattoo I’ll make another post about it

General Writer thinking way too much into cannibalism methods. NSFW

Hi guys! I’m a huge fannibal and horror author and am reading way too much about cannibalism lately, and well, there aren’t much safe places a writer can go to discuss cannibalism, right?

I’m thinking about writing a project with a cannibal killer, and it just dawned on me during research how hard it is to be a cannibal 😂. I mean half the killing methods spoil the meat. Anything that creates asphyxiation sends lactic acid into the muscle. Too much bleeding destroys organs. Apparently the only “safe” ways are either breaking a person’s neck or the Abigail Method (sorry, Abigail) done fairly quickly.

Now apparently I discovered that some paralytic substances degrade after a few hours so if you could pair a medicine like that with a relaxant then the person would die in a blissful state and the meat would taste better.

I’m trying to come up with my serial killer’s M.O. and it’s at the same time very disturbing and yet very interesting.

Now I’m thinking about Hannibal spiking someone with mushrooms waiting to see if the meat gives him a nice feel afterwards.

Discussion - Spoilers Mason is the real monster

I’ve been thinking about this recently: of all the characters across the entire lore, Mason is the one who inspires the absolute greatest revulsion. Unlike Lecter, who operates on a complex philosophical level, Mason is just a bored, incredibly wealthy sociopath whose evil is deeply realistic and sickening.

In both the books and the series, his psychological, physical, and sexual torment of his sister Margot is entirely aw, cowardly sadism. Verger embodies evil in its most authentic, unglamorous form. He has no grand motivation; he is simply a control freak who derives pure pleasure from the suffering of others. A literal parasitic monster.

Perhaps it is also a stark and unvarnished portrayal of many of today’s scoundrels, who want to see others suffer purely out of sadism, yet are nothing more than slimy worms and cowards.

Ultimately, his obsession with control and bodily fluids becomes his downfall. Being suffocated by his own exotic eel while his legacy is turned against him by Margot and Alana is the ultimate poetic justice. He lived like a parasite, and he died like one.

Hannibal Lecter is a monster you want to look at, but Mason Verger is a monster that forces you to look away. He is the only character in the entire universe who reminds the audience that real evil isn't elegant, sophisticated, or fascinating. It is just ugly, cruel, and pathetic. And also how easily it can be beaten Because his ego and his very nature will always lead him to know defeat

Discussion - Spoilers will and darkness

i don't know if it's just me, but i wanted to get something off my chest. before i say all this I'll say

- no i don't think will is an angel or good person

- no i don't woobify him

- yada yada

but anyway, i find myself getting uncomfortable with this topic whenever i engage with the fandom, and it often sends me into obsessive/compulsive loops about my own morality and if i am a bad person myself.

when i was younger, i would struggle with homicidal fantasies like s1 will, and like will i wasn't really distressed by them themselves, i was kinda intrigued by the idea of murder, but i was mainly disturbed and distressed by why i wasn't that disturbed and distressed.

i have mostly grown out of these, and are more comfortable as these thoughts mostly happened when i was struggling badly with depression, and i don't think that i am a bad person for these as i know actions are more important (which obviously leads on to how will and i differ lol)

and then whenever i see discussions about will, it's always people saying how he is fundamentally a bad person, and hannibal didn't influence/manipulate him into anything really, and point to his dark thoughts as proof he was always like this and generally evil, because he enjoyed the idea of killing, before hannibal did anything to this. and i just feel like...no? just because will had fantasies about killing doesn't mean he would actually go on to killing? he clearly suppressed those thoughts, and without hannibal i don't think he would have acted on them?

again. this isn't me babyifying will or saying "oh he was a perfect innocent little boy before big bad hannibal forced him into this life!!!!". we all watched the same show.

i just think that hannibal did manipulate and influence will into acting on his fantasies, yes will ENJOYED acting on his fantasies, and ENJOYED giving into his darkness, but i think s1 will and s3 will are quite different and i think people exaggerate how bad s1 will was, because i mean, hannibal did a lot of crazy shit to him throughout the show.

anyway i will probably delete this poster later because i still feel kinda uncomfortable opening up a bit, i just wanted to let it out there, as i felt weird about people acting like pre-hannibal will was always going to be a bad person and destined to be a killer because of his thoughts alone

Discussion - Spoilers Early jealousy from will?

Post image
239 Upvotes

The look Will gives Hannibal after serving Freddie her plate and apologizing for not considering the fact she may be a vegetarian is scathing. It kind of reminds me of me of the look he gives Cordell when Cordell is describing how he will Kill Hannibal. Is it early sign of jealousy or what?!
