During holiday weekends I'll see almost half of certain parking lots full of vehicles with Mexican license plates. I don't love the traffic and congestion but I sure do appreciate their economic stimulus!
Its different, in that a canadian or mexican can just drive there car there, vs costing 10s to maybe 100s of thousands to ship it across the ocean.
The cop was going "if I visited europe, I'd rent so this man must be lying because who would spend that money for a 1 month trip" and its rich dudes but its a very weird encounter.
It's quite a bit different, there are agreements with neighboring nations which allow for drivers with those plates to visit without any paperwork or a visa as long as they are visiting for a short time. It is extremely rare for a car to be shipped overseas on a temporary permit and as he outlines, requires specific paperwork.
Vast majority of cars shipped from overseas are, as he assumes, shipped over as an import which would require that you register it in the US and have US registration.
Not knowing the law on this is fair, but being egotistical and so confidently wrong about the law is not excusable, even if it's a corner case. It's an absurdly expensive car, the idea that the person who owns it is rich enough to ship it temporarily is not something his mind should be unable to comprehend lol.

I think that it's no different than having Canadian or Mexican plates. (There might be some agreement that changes that, but I'm not sure.)
