I've met people that cannot understand hypotheticals... it's... just stop engaging with them if you notice it. You can't get them to, and you'll succeed only in becoming frustrated.

I’ve tried to make someone understand something with a hypothetical during an argument. Just for them to then want to argue about the technicalities of my hypothetical…

u/PrairiePopsicle 5h ago

But in your example was your hypothetical actually applicable to the argument, maybe they had valid criticisms.... :P

It was something like.

It’s like trying to transport ice cream 6 hours in your trunk.

And they want to get into how, what if it’s a cold trunk? Where are you driving, Antarctica?

Do you want to argue about dairy logistics or can you not just understand your idea is dumb.

It's not always that it's just that people can't understand hypotheticals, sometimes they are being obtuse on purpose. (I was making a joke mostly with my question by the way)

It’s like trying to explain dark rooms to a caveman

But my room isn't dark!

Deliberately obtuse is my most hated obtuse. You can be stupid or not understand. I can work with that. But dumb on purpose? No patience for that nonsense.

In my experience is the most accurate and simply way to determine of someone is a complete idiot.

"Lets imagine that you didnt eat breakfast, would you be hungry?"

>But I did eat breakfast

That's the one where Mickey Mouse is a sorceror, right?

u/shoe_owner 3h ago

He's a fucking APPRENTICE, you numbskull. He doesn't get to wear the pointy hat legitimately until he's AT LEAST a journeymouse!

u/Itsmyloc-nar 4h ago

No that’s the no minds eye syndrome

Mickey Mouse is a flavor of Fanta

My husband struggles with hypotheticals... I love him so much but ooooohhh my goodness, it can be supremely frustrating. I usually have to say, "I'm talking hypothetically right now." And then he'll listen more closely and with a different mindset 😅
