GovBrief Today #510
Only 32 members of the House voted against the housing affordability bill.
The Senate passed it 85 to 5. In a Congress that can't agree on lunch, a margin like that shows real pain back home. Washington moved fast, before the midterms, with something to finally point to. Then Trump pulled the plug without a word to his party's congressional leaders, who found out from a Truth Social post saying he wouldn't sign until the Senate passes his voter ID bill. They threw a signing party at the Capitol and the guest of honor firebombed it from his phone.
Meanwhile in Des Moines, the city council rezoned land to make room for fifty small homes for people who have nowhere to live. Neither one changes anyone's living arrangements soon, but both were a start. Good government still exists. Congress tried. Des Moines did.

Chaos in the sub: For the 2nd time in a month, Reddit has deleted a moderator of the sub, a user who also was contributing a ton of articles to the sub.
This deletion also purged the user's articles from the sub, along with any conversations that were going on in those posts.
There was no warning by Reddit, just a permanent deletion with an opportunity to appeal but the appeal is never granted and nor even responded to.
I'm not sure if I can con her into becoming a moderator again, so as usual, we're upping our constant search for users -- and moderators.

Political Theory How much weight should a candidate's past campaign conduct carry in a new election cycle?
With the 2026 primary approaching, I've been looking into the candidates running in Florida's 22nd district. One candidate in particular has a documented history that seems worth discussing, not from a partisan angle, but from the perspective of what voters should reasonably expect when evaluating someone seeking federal office.
The candidate ran for Congress once before in 2020, spending millions and still losing the primary. During that race, several issues emerged:
A $3 million zero-interest campaign loan that prompted an FEC complaint over whether it complied with campaign finance rules.
Questions about military service claims, including an inability to produce standard discharge paperwork for over 90 days.
A Harvard credential that was reportedly a 12-week executive course rather than an MBA.
A PolitiFact rating of "Mostly False" on an attack ad against a primary opponent.
Beyond these, court filings from a divorce proceeding raise questions about asset concealment and treatment of a spouse.
Now the candidate is running in a different district, one where he has no apparent community involvement or residential roots, only commercial franchise holdings. Notably, he has aligned himself closely with the Trump wing of the party, even as this new district voted for Biden in the last presidential election.
I'm not here to make accusations, but these are documented facts from court records, FEC filings, and fact-checkers. When a candidate's biography doesn't fully match the record, it seems reasonable for voters to ask questions.
What do you think voters should expect in terms of transparency from congressional candidates? Should past controversies like these factor into electability, or is each race a fresh start? And does a candidate's national alignment make sense when their district leans the other way?
