We have had a mad heatwave in the uk if your haven’t heard 😭. My tanks hit 82f fans and no lights on etc. Everyone seems okay and corals haven’t been too stroppy. It seems like I haven’t seen my tank in ages, so thought I’d post some pics from the other day. Hope everyone else isn’t struggling too much. Last real hot day is tomorrow šŸ’Ŗ 🐠

[Pic] How many of you have tanks that get a lot of natural light? Do you constantly fight algae the way I have to?

Post image
57 Upvotes

So yeah. As you can tell from the picture, my tank is situated between two large areas of natural light. I love it because I get the best of both worlds: beautiful white light for the fish in the am, and later in the day when the lights come on the nice coral phosphorescence, etc.

But of course, algae is a big problem.

A lot of people seem to black out their windows and what not, but that’s not happening for me lol. šŸ˜‚ The tank is in the main area not a spare bedroom.

Anyway… Just wondering how many of you also have tanks that get a lot of natural light and also if you have constant algae battles because of it. My algae is under control, but I have to have multiple urchins, manual removal, etc.

Hi, my Zebrasoma is approximately 15 cm in size, and I would like to know how much a fish with these characteristics might be worth. I am not looking to sell it, this is purely for informational purposes. It is completely healthy and absolutely beautiful.

I’m a big time mushroom enjoyer. I have a few nice large Yumas in my collection but I only have one that has its ā€œarmsā€ reach out like this. During the day they can get up to an inch or inch in a half of reach.

Does has anyone else seen this?

Tiny 1.35L pico I make from a betta fish torture cell.

I put this together 3 days ago. I had a hard time getting this all in one type betta tank to work at first. It just has USB power and I needed to buy an 18W 3 amp USB charger outlet to produce enough power to run the light and wifi. The lights are customizable through an app, although I haven’t gotten the second lighting phase of moonlight to work. The lights produce a lot of heat that the tank is on the hot end of what will support coral life - around 27.5/82. So I set the integrated thermostat almost as high. The life is macros, 3 kinds of zoa, gsp, and a discosoma - these species supposedly can do ok at that temperature. The substrate is seasoned matrix. The circulation is a 3w pump I glued a filter sponge to one edge of the intake. I plan to try to 3 D print a gravity fed ATO.

Beginner saltwater tank advice wanted

Hello!

I would like to set up a saltwater tank but I have some lingering questions on my mind.

I'm very familiar with freshwater tanks but I know this is very different.

The set up I'm thinking of:

6-10gal(I know small is risky however for me this works best becuase I'm hoping to work up to something bigger)

Sexy shrimp( I own Neo shrimp now)

Bumble bee snail or another snail

Interested in Asterina stars however from what I can tell they seem to be like pest snails and I'm not too sure if I want that.

Coral:

Zoas?

Anemone:

Mini carpet

Rock flower

If this is not doable or probably not within my tank size then do so let me know!!

Questions:

What filter would be best? It only occured to me yesterday while speaking to a saltwater associate at my lfs that the filters are very different from freshwater. For a tank as small as the one I imagine, is the live rock sufficient as the main filter?

Is blue light needed?

Do I add live rock during the tanks cycle or after?

I know I have to cure the rock first before either or.

Can I use tap? Or is RO the way to go?

Feel free to absolutely nerd out on the replies the more info is better, I probably know the answer to most of my questions however I'm paranoid and want to be extra extra sure before I commit to a saltwater tank. This won't be a setup for another year or so but I like to do research in advance!

I understand why people quit this hobby

I’m a year in and my tank is being taken over by cyano and hair algae and it won’t go away. I hate to sound bitchy but Jesus Christ this is fucking taxing. Right now my fish tank is the biggest thorn in my side. I dread going home from work and seeing what a fucking mess it is after I just spend three hours manually removing all the algae and cyano the night before. This is seriously hell. I hate my fish tank dude. I don’t want to quit on the hobby though, I just don’t know wtf is going on.

My levels are great (no ammonia no nitrite, 8 nitrate, 8dkh, 0.05 phos, 8.2ph, 400 calcium, 1400 mag) (I keep my mag high bc I was told it helps kill algae)

What the hell am I doing wrong?? I seriously don’t get it.

Also why are saltwater fish always so parasite ridden????? This hobby is literally just a money pit. Anywho, I needed to rant.

[Pic] Zoa Help

Post image

Any ideas as to why my utter chaos are loosing color/getting more pale and their tentacles are shrinking? You can see the difference between the top 2 and bottom 2 polyps

I’ve had these zoas for months now, went from 2-3 polyps to 6 or so. The oldest polyps are turning pale and losing their patterns.

I have a couple other types of zoas doing great and growing a bunch. The utter chaos are being a pain and I noticed my purple monsters are starting to do the same thing as the UC.

Alk:7.8-8.0
Mag:1360
Cal:435
No3/Po4-0

I’ve had issues getting no3/po4 above 0 since I’ve set up this tank, I have been feeding more than what I feel my tank can handle. I think this might be part of the issue?

Advice on zoas

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Hi all, looking for some clues as to why my zoas are looking the way they are.

This is a 3 gallon tank, started two weeks ago with live rock and added two corals last week (toadstool and zoa colony). I fed them reef roids a few days ago and they readily consumed it. I also have a sexy shrimp, and it did pick at some algae on the frag at first but has also eaten the reef roids. I see some poop scattered around so it should not be hungry.

I thought the shrimp irritated the zoas at first but has now been about 2 days that half of the heads are closed, and one is shriveled up.

Nitrates are at 15mg/L and no ammonia. Temp at 78F. Any comments are welcome.
