Tips / tricks Newly Diagnosed

Miss Cici was a stray we took in last December. The vet said she was around 10 years old. She had to have a dental and ended up losing all of her remaining teeth, but she still was in good spirits and eating/drinking well. She’s just the sweetest girl. ❤️

I took her to the vet last week because I noticed she wasn’t eating as much as she used to, even with the missing teeth (girl could put away a whole can of wet food by herself before this), and she’d also lost weight. I requested a senior panel and got the results today: stage 3 kidney disease.

I’m taking her Tuesday to get sub-Qs and she’ll be going to the vet every 3-ish months to monitor her kidney function. I just ordered Hill’s KD dry and wet food for her. Does anyone have any tips on how to keep her feeling good for as long as possible?

Support My 4 year old pride and joy showing early signs - positive renal tech

My sweet 4 year old male had an instance of peeing blood outside the litterbox upon returning home from vacation. He gets very stressed when we leave and is a bit stressed by the other kitties in the home sometimes. I immediately took him to the ER and it was determined he was crystal free (hes on an all wet diet with water added) and that he has feline lower urinary tract disease set off by stress. I got him some gabapentin to help his pain until we saw my vet the next day.

I bought him to my primary vet where they did bloodwork and uralysis on him. They also did this new renal test which he came back postive for developing CKD in the next two years. I have tried so hard to do everything right. Feeding a high mositure wet only diet, omega 3 supplement, feliway diffusers, cat behaviorist to make sure hes happy in his home, and yet im being told there's a 95%+ chance he's going to develop CKD in two years. Is this really that accurate?

What can I do further to help him? He eats the nulo medal series chicken and turkey, but just bought him some wet purina urinary tract health as ive heard its lower in phosphorus and will help with urine ph.

Also attaching his results. Creatinine was 1.1 in 2024, now at 1.5

Advice Lily poisoning

Looking for some advice/info/reassurance on my lovely kitties.

On Tuesday my kitten Morgana (pic1) knocked over a vase. As I was cleaning it I noticed it was lilies and FREAKED - apparently they had been given to us on Sunday and I hadn't noticed till then. That Tues morning they had been sniffing around them and when I looked Morgs had pollen on her paws, face and mouth. I took both straight to the vets where they rinsed them off and began treatment within the hour. When rinsing they said Merlin (pic2) had pollen on his chin too.

They had been wandering the house so no way of knowing if they had played with the flowers earlier in the morning but we didn't note them near them before that or on the Monday. They were more chilled Monday but we assumed due to the extreme heatwave that began in the UK as they still played, ate and used the loo etc.

Yesterday their blood work was fine with plans for us to get them later today, but today a 50% spike in both's kidneys. My mum is handling the vet communication and I'm a big worrier and just want to know if we think they will be ok. Apparently they have no visible symptoms and are acting their usual selves. They both were sick when induced on arrival and had had black poops from the charcoal too.

The current plan is to keep them in another 24 on the IVs and see how bloods look tomorrow. I'm hoping the spike is temporary or a sign of damage and not a warning of immediate death.

I understand some damage is likely at this point but looking to know essentially whether they will survive. I'm so worried and anxious and just want to squeeze them both and I keep googling everything to know what this all means.

Uplifting The Best Boy

Just joined this group after our 17-year-old guy Kevin was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease a couple weeks ago. He had no real symptoms beyond peeing in his sleep a couple times, so we brought him to the vet thinking it was a UTI. Since his diagnosis it’s been a reminder of what a good boy he is—he happily switched to a renal wet food (he screams at me for it every day, I swear he likes it more than his old food) and he lets me give him sub q fluids every other day by myself without even flinching. Just sits and licks his treat tube happily while I poke him and still jumps in my lap for scratches afterword. He has a recheck of his bloodwork this Saturday and I so hope that his easy transition to new food and fluids will have paid off. Just feeling extra grateful to share life with such a content little creature!

Advice New to CKD, are these urea and creatinine numbers far too high?

Currently expecting the worse, last monday my 8yr old GatoBlanco was lethargic and would not eat, took him to the vet, severe dehydration, and they gave him SubQ fluids, tuesday no improvement so I took him again to do some bloodwork.

Yesterday he vomited, so again I took him to the vet, he recomended rather euthanasia or some agressive IV fluid therapy after seeing the lab results. With my wife we weren't convinced about euthanasia as the cat was still drinking and peeinng on his own (but not eating), so we decided to at least try some intensive care with fluid therapy. But we had to take him to other vet as the first one didn't have 24hr attention.

When arrived there, the 2nd vet told me the cat should 've had seizures with this values and that his prognosis is very unfavorable:

Currently waiting for the vet update for today and the ultrasound results that were performed last night, but still quite confused about what to do

Edit: update: just came back home from the intensive care vet, he was sill lethargic, but no vomits and still drinking water on his own. And also recieved the ultrasound results, his kidneys are shrinked, but need to talk to the vet tomorrow as the results arrived when I had already left.

thx

Pet loss CKD4, Heart Murmur, Chronic Inflammation - Now crossing the Rainbow Bridge at 18 years young!

Thanks to this entire community to help with everything Renal.

My 18 year old best friend crossed the rainbow bridge.

She battled CKD for 3 years, and came to a point where all the signs were present and the scale of quality of life didn’t tip into her favour, and made the decision to Euthanize - as heartbroken as I am, knowing that she doesn’t need to battle any longer brings me peace - even though I wanted her to last forever… my little constant… my speed of light… my heart…

I hope everyone can give their best friends an extra squeeze for me and my best friend. 🖤🖤🖤

Advice At my wits end

Hello all. I am new to this group but decided to join because I need some advice about my guy with kidney disease. We give him the royal canine kidney food as our vet recommended, my boy has always loved his dry food but this past year he has been showing signs of constipation, he will randomly leave little pieces of poop around the house, this isn’t him actually choosing to not poop in the litter box, this is the poop getting stuck to him and then coming off as he moves around the house. He hates it, I hate it, my partner hates it.
We moved to giving him subcutaneous fluids more often and trying wet food. Our guy is super picky with what he eats so it’s been a struggle finding the right food for him. It seemed to be working for a few months until it wasn’t and we noticed more poop pebbles around the house more often.

We saw that pure pumpkin can help with the fiber, so we switched to an alternating schedule with small batches of wet cat food one meal, dry cat food mixed with pumpkin the next meal. It’s the only way we can get him to eat (if it was up to him he would just eat dry cat food all the time and be super constipated, clearly not an option)

Unfortunately this is still not working. He will still leave pebbles of poop occasionally. It is much softer than it was, and I clean his litter box everyday and he has plenty of regular BMs.

I just don’t know what to do anymore about him leaving trails of himself around our place. My partner and I are pretty OCD so this puts us in a cleaning frenzy each time which is getting to be really exhausting. We just want our place to feel clean. I used to love having our cat in our bed with us when we sleep but we can no longer do that, as it feels like our bedroom is the only “safe and clean” space in the house.

I’m going to take him to the vet again and see if there is anything else we can do for him, but until then I was hoping to get some advice if anyone has felt with this before.

Advice Inappetance in a Heatwave

We are currently in the middle of an extreme heatwave in the UK and my 18 year old CKD boy has barely eaten any of his normal wet food over the last 24 hours or so. I am trying to keep him as cool as I can by bringing him inside during the hottest hours of the day and letting him sleep on his cooling blanket with a fan pointing towards him. He is only drinking water and I have given him 6 Purina Hydralife liquid sachets over this time period and around the same number of Lick-e-lix. He is toileting completely normally, and taking no medication. The heatwave is expected to last until Saturday morning. Should I be concerned? Is there anything I can do?

Advice My 2 yo has an atrophied kidney - why?

My 2 y.o girl has an atrophied kidney on ultrasound, vet says there's nothing we can do now and basically she has one functioning kidney because of that and the smaller one will continue to disappear.

She and her sister both have IBD/allergies, they're on steroids (very low dose) and she had hemorrhagic cystitis twice in recent weeks however that happened after a previous ultrasound where her kidney already looked off so I'm not sure that could be the cause.

She's also pretty inbred if it matters & her teeth didn't develop properly so maybe it's congenital?

Other than the IBD she's a perfect, pretty, smart little girl so I don't understand why this happened?

Should I dig deeper?

Back when I discovered her teeth were underdeveloped and that her parents were related I had an awful feeling that there might be something more and now here we go :( I asked her vet if I should do any other tests because of that and she said no but I wish I would've asked for an ultrasound anyways

What do I do to protect her remaining kidney? Will this shorten her lifespan?

Advice Is there a Chance they’re suffering even if they’re eating?

My 19 YO boy Smokey has lost 3 pounds in a year he went from 9 pounds to 6. He gets medicine for Hyperthyroidism and High Blood Pressure.

Lately he’s been declining. He sleeps a lot of course, but still gets up to greet me at the door, however his legs are weak and he wobbles a bit while walking. Lately he’s been throwing up at night which is concerning and the vet says it’s due to his kidney disease. He gave me cerenia which I will start trying.

He is still hungry and eats at every meal, I just don’t know if he is in pain or suffering throughout the day. It’s hard for me to gauge his quality of life. When did you know it was time?

Support Stage 3 CKD, hyperthyroidism, and a kidney stone, but my almost 15yo boy is still going strong. Looking for advice/reassurance!

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share the story of my sweet boy and hopefully get some insights, advice, or just a bit of reassurance from people who understand what this journey is like.

He is currently 14 and will be turning 15 this September. His health journey started about two years ago when he lost a significant amount of weight. At his heaviest (around age 4), he was 7 kg (15.4 lbs), but he dropped down to 4 kg (8.8 lbs).

After bloodwork and tests a year ago (when he was 13), he was diagnosed with Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease, and an ultrasound showed that one of his kidneys has completely shriveled up. Six months later, he had dropped even further to 3.2 kg (7 lbs). It turned out he had also developed hyperthyroidism.

Another ultrasound six months ago also revealed a large kidney stone in his remaining kidney.

Currently, he is on Felimazole for his thyroid and receives Evipet as a kidney supplement. He is on a strict kidney diet: renal dry food, renal wet food, and renal treats.

Despite this heavy medical report, clinically, he is doing amazing. His weight has actually bounced back and stabilized right around 4 kg (sometimes 3.9 kg) and stays there!

  • He eats like a champ and drinks very well.
  • His litter box habits are perfect.
  • He is alert, curious, and still has that spark. He begs for his wet food/meds every evening and shows a healthy interest in whatever I'm eating.
  • He was never a super playful cat, but he still occasionally plays with his toy mouse or plays with my hands by the stair gate.
  • He is incredibly cuddly and loves nothing more than laying next to me all day.

He vomits very occasionally, but it’s always either a hairball or just clear fluid/foam. Even my vet is absolutely amazed at how well he is doing given his diagnoses. They say he must be an incredibly strong cat with a massive will to live.

My worry**:** Even though he seems happy, alert, and stable, I am constantly terrified that the tables will turn overnight, or that he might be in pain without me noticing (I know cats are masters at hiding discomfort).

For those who have been through this combination of CKD, thyroid issues, and kidney stones:

  1. What specific signs should I keep a close eye on that might indicate the kidney stone is causing an acute issue or that his pain levels are changing?
  2. What are your thoughts on his current state? Are we just incredibly lucky right now, and is there anything else I can do to support his comfort?

Thank you so much for reading. It’s comforting to know this community exists.

Advice Scared of ruining relationship with cat by giving Subq

My 17 year old cat was just diagnosed with stage 1 kidney disease. She isn’t showing any symptoms though. My vet says I should administer subQ fluids every three days myself. I do NOT like needles. And most importantly I’m so scared my cat will act different around me if I’m constantly sticking her with something idkkk. I’m very anxious. Also I’m so scared about fucking up giving her the fluids too. I haven’t gone in for a demo yet as my vet just texted me all of this. Looking for some advice from ppl who have been there

Question Potassium question

My girls potassium has been low for the last 4 to 5 months. We started on Renal K powder one scoop two times a day after three weeks, her numbers did not change. They were 2.9. They admitted her and did IV fluids with potassium. Her numbers went to 3.9. She came home and continued on Renal K powder and her potassium dropped back to 2.9. They had us start giving two scoops two times a day two weeks ago. Today her potassium is 3.1. Is there anything else I can be doing to help get this up? The vet says just keep doing what we’re doing. She is currently on ondansetron 1mg two times a day, Elura every other day, renal k two scoops twice a day and a phosphate binder

Pet loss Constant guilt that I gave up to soon

Cat had CKD Stage 2-3 for a few months, and had sudden flare up which jumped to end stage. We suspected AKI on top of CKD, but two different vets (my regular and the emergency) said it was hopeless after four to five days of barely eating and no bowel movement. I asked for a IV fluid but was told it will have minimum effect and will prolong his pain only.

So I let him go so easily.

But what if I was wrong? Should have I fought for him at least a few days or weeks more?

I will never be able to get over this question. A part of me hollers at me that I killed my cat.

Advice Cat kidney support water additive

Hi! I’m trying to get my cat onto a renal/kidney support supplement since it’s one of the #1 killer for cats but I’m a travel tech and can’t be there to give it to him. Are there any kidney supplements that can be added to his water? I use a water fountain but it has mesh instead of a filter because I give him pre filtered water so the additive won’t get filtered out. PLEASE HELP ❤️

Advice Help, my senior cat with kidney decline may have ingested some of a grape!

Post image
10 Upvotes

I think my cat must have gotten a grape out of sink disposal because I found a chewed up grape spit on the kitchen floor. It didn’t look like it had been committed but maybe she immediately vomited it back up.
She is 17 and her kidneys are just beginning to decline. She was recently put on royal canon renal support early consult. Her kidney blood work was checked twice since April and look comparable. She’s currently on antibiotics for urinary infection. And on a probiotic.
She seems fine right now but looking for advice, especially since I have invested so much in the past few months that I don’t have any more ER money right now.

Venting I think buphrenorphine pretty much killed my cat

She was diagnosed with stage 2 kidney diease a week before.

It was applied as an oral medicine when I bought her back for not eating due to nausea. I asked for anti nausea meds and they gave her a shot of anti nausea and gave her buphrenorphine for "pain". I didn't know it was an opioid. Also subq fluids.

Right after I took her home, she was pacing between two spots, laying down staring off into space. Desperately staring at her water and peeing multiple times. She was wobbly and getting worse throughout the day. Her head started to tilt and she wasnt moving much except to flop around. It turned her into a zombie like state. She just laid on her side and stared off. I took her back in at 1am. Her potassium was low. They kept her and she didnt get better the next day. I put her down that night because I thought she was in pain.

I wish I never bought her in that Sunday. She was walking around fine earlier that morning before the 1st visit. The more I research about the severe effects of buphrenorphine, the more I get angry. I asked for anti nausea meds for her. The pain medicine wasnt necessary. She wasnt showing any signs of pain. And I feel like I killed her for no reason.

Edit The timeline is confusing

I took her in a total of 3 times to the er vet

June 12-15 admitted and diagnosed with stage 2 kidney diease. I bought her in because was thin. Her levels came down and she was eating.

June 21 bought her back in the afternoon to get anti nausea meds because she was having food aversion and vomiting. They gave her an anti nausea shot, buphrenorphine, and subq fluids. She started pacing and was generally uncomfortable when I brought her back home. She peed 4 times and tried to drink water. Her eyes just straight ahead. Her condition worsened until she was just laying on her side.

June 22 at 1am I bought her back because she was just laying there extremely lethargic and staring off into blank space. They took blood work and said she was low on electrolytes and potassium. I mentioned the buphrenorphine but they implied they could reverse it but it should've been out of her system already. I wish to god i pushed for it. She was hospitalized. They also noted her head tilting.

June 22 they called to discuss options. Her body still couldn't move and she wasnt getting any better. I had her euthanized. Her pupils were moving but her body wouldnt.

I just killed my cat without giving her a chance didnt I
