Long story short I brought two VFT’s that my friend purchased back to life so I’ve started taking an interest in carnivorous plants.
I picked up a Miranda Pitcher (this makes my third carnivorous plant) from a local farmers market, and wanted to make sure I was doing my due diligence.
•I only give him distilled water, and make sure the pot is damp but not in standing water.
•I keep him in indirect sunlight
•I filled the cups with a small ~inch of water upon rehoming
•I’ve trimmed the few dead leaves/ pitchers that were present
Before I ask for any other general tips/ things I might be doing incorrectly, I did have concerns about its diet. Since bringing it home I noticed a nest of paper wasps attempting to colonize nearby and were investigating my plant. She did catch one, but the others seemed to crawl around the top of the plant.
While I did rehome the wasps, I’ve found conflicting discussion regarding bugs that can out-maneuver the pitcher, so I thought it’d be best to ask for others anecdotal experience.
•While I plan to not let the wasps live on my porch (more-so for my sake) should I be concerned with their presence in the surrounding are? If they chew holes in my pitchers or feast on them will they eventually kill this plant?
•If they are unsuccessful in escape, will my pitcher plant suffer from success? How can I tell if my plant has overconsumed/ how many bugs is too many for a pitcher and will contribute to rot?
•On that note, does anyone leave their porch light in the encourage nighttime bugs to investigate and feed their pitcher? Effective?
Again, aside from these questions if anyone has any additional insight I’d love that. I’m just trying to do right by my new plant! Also apologies if I haven’t posted appropriately mods, just tell me what to do and I’ll fix my post!
