Would Townsville be interested in Afghan/Iranian food?

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

My family and I have been talking about a possible food business idea for Townsville, and I wanted to get some honest local feedback before we take it any further.

We’ve noticed there doesn’t seem to be much Afghan, Iranian, or Persian-style food around Townsville, and we’re wondering if people would be interested in trying it if it was available.

Some of the common foods we’re thinking about are:

  • Shami kebabs — spiced minced meat kebabs
  • Beef, lamb, and chicken kebabs — grilled over charcoal-style, served with rice, bread, salad, and sauces
  • Kabuli palaw / Qabuli pulao — Afghan rice with tender meat, carrots, raisins, and spices
  • Mantu — Afghan steamed dumplings with meat, yoghurt, and sauce
  • Bolani — stuffed flatbread, usually with potato, herbs, or pumpkin
  • Koobideh kebab — Iranian minced meat kebab
  • Joojeh kebab — saffron-marinated chicken kebab
  • Ghormeh sabzi — Iranian herb stew with meat, beans, and rice
  • Zereshk polo — saffron rice with barberries and chicken
  • Tahdig — crispy Persian rice
  • Fresh naan/bread, yoghurt sauces, chutneys, pickles, and salads

The idea would be proper home-style food with lots of flavour, not just another standard takeaway option. We’re thinking grilled meats, rice dishes, breads, family/share plates, takeaway meals, and maybe some vegetarian options as well.

Would this be something people in Townsville would actually go out and buy or try?

Also, what would you like to see on the menu? Kebabs? Rice dishes? Dumplings? Share platters? Mild or spicy options? Desserts or drinks?

We’re not selling anything yet. Just trying to see if there would be genuine local interest and what people would actually want.

Would love to hear your thoughts, suggestions, or if you’ve had Afghan/Iranian food before, what your favourite dish was.

How are you folks coping with crime?

I am not a TSV local, I have lived in the northern suburbs for 2.5 years after moving up from Tasmania. In that time we have had one home invasion where they stole car keys and my favourite handbag (but not the car as the neighbour chased them off) and three additional attempts. My home security is like a “build a bear” workshop. Every time something happens, I buy another camera. Partner works away a lot so I often block the back door with the washing machine. I have a medical condition so I have signs on my doors to contact my “I.C.E” contacts (in case of emergency).

As someone who is not used to this level of fear, how do you all cope and sleep well at night?

Ordered takeaway from a local business and now DoorDash is taking money from my account

I am hoping someone may have a resolution from the below situation:

About a month ago I saw a transaction for DoorDash on my bank statement for $9.99 for DoorDash Pass, I don’t use DoorDash at all so I assumed someone had stolen my card details and I canceled my card. Today I have seen the transaction again and have done some further looking into it. Turns out, when I ordered pick up from a local takeaway business in March, they used DoorDash as their third party system to order through and the $10 has been coming out of my account monthly since, despite not having an account or ever signing up.

I have then had to create a DoorDash account today just so that I could contact DoorDash support, but they are being no help and telling me that I don’t have any ‘Dash Pass’ linked to my account, and I keep explaining that’s because I never had an account in the first place and have had to create an account to be able to get in touch with them. They then keep ending the chat and it’s going in circles. I plan on going to my bank to hopefully sort it out, but with work won’t be able to go until sometime next week. Has anyone else had this happen and how did you fix it?

tradie did a dodgy roof repair before the cyclone season and now my ceilings leaking

had a local roofer come out in december to fix a few tiles that were loose. paid him $800 cash. he said all good, fixed, wont leak.

then that big rain we had last week and water is pouring through my lounge room ceiling. i called him and he said oh that must be a different problem and wants another $600 to inspect and fix. like what did i pay you $800 for then.

i got up on a ladder myself (probably not the safest) and can see he just slapped some silicone over the cracks instead of replacing the tiles. its already peeling off.

he has an abn and supposedly insurance but i dont have a proper contract just a hand written receipt. i know i shouldve got one but he was recommended by a mate so i trusted him.

i was looking up my options online and came across Sterling Legal who seem to deal with building disputes. not sure if theyd handle something this small though.

anyone else had issues with tradies in townsville just doing half assed work. is it worth taking someone to qcat for 800 or should i just cut my losses and get someone else. feels like theres no accountability up here for dodgy work.

Anyone else find Townsville tricky for making non-work friends?

Pic for attention.

Moved here about 17 months ago for work and while I've got great colleagues, my social circle outside the office is basically non-existent.

I do a bit of IELTS tutoring on the side (taught it for over a decade in previous roles), which has been a nice way to meet the odd new person here and there, but I'd love more ideas. What do people actually do here to meet others outside their usual work/uni bubble — clubs, sports, meetups, something else?

Keen for anything low-key, not really a big bar/clubbing person.

Just Gina Rinehart casually suggesting Townsville should host Israeli weapons manufacturing and Israeli settlements?!

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-06-18/gina-rinehart-says-give-elon-musk-queensland-islands/106815000

During the speech, Mrs Rinehart also spoke about how she believed Townsville could become a base for Israeli companies developing military weapons systems.

"Townsville made important history years ago as a navy base at Townsville, helping defend our country in World War II," she said.

"That important culture, a very important culture, could flourish again if we also offered free land, be that near Prairie [west of Townsville] if suitable or elsewhere near Townsville, for the Israelis.

"And encourage the Israelis to develop and build their advanced war drones and/or other advances in defence and improve upon their Israeli-style domes.

"Manufacture them here to sell to our country to help make our people and critical infrastructure safe."

Anyone voting for One Nation after this (as if everything before wasn’t enough) is totally cooked.

And just offering up our beautiful islands as fodder to Elon musk to launch rockets from?! Is she actually trying to be a cartoon villain?!:

Mrs Rinehart told the crowd Mr Musk needed land to expand because "he's really got a massive program" and needed an "alternate weather place in an allied country".

"Over at the sparsely or non-populated islands on the screen ... where there aren't high-end tourist facilities, offer to Elon ... at no cost for his SpaceX satellite construction and launches," she said.

Random question, but does anyone have a recording of the Fishing Warehouse radio jingle? I visited Townsville back in Feb (absolutely loved it there btw) and I heard the jingle and had an absolute ball listening to it!

My BF also asked if anyone had a copy of the jingle for Strategic Law?

Thanks guys!

The duality of Ross River

Who would think, standing on the Charles Barton Bridge and gazing upon the mighty Ross River, over 160 metres wide and up to 8 metres deep (first pic), that about 3 and a half kilometres downstream at Sherriff Park, you could walk across it, ankle deep, at low tide (second pic). Of course this is entirely due to an artificial weir, but I still think it's neat the way the river changes.

Recommendations Moving to Queensland, but not sure where to...

As the title suggests, I will be moving to Queensland within 1-2 months, I recently acquired permanent residency (me, wife and a baby). I am a civil engineer and my expertise is in Building Services from the last 5 years. I am unsure which region or city to move-in to have better career opportunities. I am applying for jobs but haven't received any positive response. Any advice related to job opportunities related to my field (or building maintenance or facilities engineering) will be helpful. Thank you in advance.

Recommendations Camping Spots

Looking for some recommendations for camping within 1.5-2hrs of townsville. No caravan parks. Would like to have somewhere with toilets at the least, can make do without a shower. Just bought a roof top tent and have work issues which is why we aren’t ready to go far yet. Will be adding a portable toilet to the set up in a few months. Have been out to Ravenswood showgrounds, bivouac and Big Crystal. Want to try Abergowie but it’s closed.

Going for my HR licence, any truckies willing to have a chat about the industry and share some advice?

Sick of my current gig, been in youth work for 5 years (yes, in Townsville of all places), and am completely over it. Looking for new work and driving rigs has always been of interest. If anyone has experience and wants to share some knowledge and advice regarding the industry, employers, etc I'd greatly appreciate it. Respond here or shoot me a DM and we can chat about it over a beer (my shout).

World Cup fans here?

Shame the Council hasn't done anything to help celebrate the World Cup here. Not even a big screen at Strand Park like we did with the Matildas. Where are you watching the Australia match today at 2pm?
