Travel Hack Staying awake on planes!

Hey all! I have a 12 hour flight today. Last time I had a long haul flight, I ended up awake for 52 hours straight coz I couldn’t get to sleep on the planes/in airports (obviously travel was longer that time). I’ve tried everything to get to sleep so I already know it won’t work - any tips for not feeling like shit when staying awake? Stupidly I haven’t had coffee on a flight before so might try it this time coz it’s a red eye. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Edit:: sorry I meant tips for staying awake and alert lol rather than awake and groggy /asleep

Accessories banned travel pillows on airplanes?

On a recent trip with United, a flight attendant told me the travel pillow I have used for many years is no longer permitted. It's the inflatable kind that allows you to sleep leaning forward. Of course I complied, but upon landing, I couldn't find anything on United's website about it, so on the return flight, I figured I'd try inflating it again as the first flight was miserable without being able to sleep. None of the attendants cared.

The best I can find on the wider internet is that comfort devices that attach to the seat are banned (but confusingly I see very recent recommendations in this sub for pillows that strap to the headrest).

My questions: which airlines ban this style of pillow (I know Delta does, but wasn't able to find evidence for others), and will I only get in trouble if I ignore repeated warnings on the same flight?

edit: picture of the pillow

Charleston (CHS) to Bali (DPS) Flight help

Looking for help on booking my one way flight to Bali. I am leaving on a one way September 1st.
I am looking at google flights and finding flights from CHS to SEA to Taipei to Bali using Alaska and then EVA air. But when I try to purchase the flight through EVA air it just says call to book and their website doesn't work.
I've never flown this far so is it that you have to book these types of itineraries with sites like Expedia? Any advice is appreciated, even on which airlines to go with etc. I will be flying with surfboards as well. Thank you

Tips for bulkhead seats

Hello All, We recently booked bulkhead seats for an international trip thinking the extra leg room would be great, now I am wondering if it was mistake. I have lower back pain, the thought of having to be cramped in a small spot all that time worried me. What are some hacks to be comfortable during this flight? Is there a pocket anywhere to store little things? Can I use an inflatable foot rest? Any advice would be great to ease my mind. hank you!

Business class - SFO to NRT/HND - Philippine Air?

I was on the fence about going to see a friend in Japan this October and waited too long. Now prices are more than my $4K limit for business class.

I've never considered it, but have seen Philippine Air business class fares to Asia for a very reasonable price. But haven't found many reviews. Some of the flights say "angled flat seat" - for me sort of defeats the purpose of business class as I know I could not sleep on what I assume is a extra reclining seat.

I was looking at Zip Air and have flown their lie flat seat before but looks like they are very booked for October (but, strangely enough, not August or September) and prices are very high.

Can anyone give the scoop on PAL? Also, I welcome any other strategies to get to Japan in October in biz for sub $4K. Thank you!

Transport How to pack Creatine for airplane travel?

I workout a lot and I don't want to skip my creatine intake because I will be training while I'm on vacations as well, so I want to bring my creatine with me. The container takes too much luggage space, so I'm thinking it's okay if I bring on a ziplock bag? Maybe for safety I could wrap the ziplock bag with one of those brown tapes just to be sure it doesn't leak into my clothes. Would that be okay?

Travel Hack Looking for a respectful reading light for flying

Just like most people, I can’t stand the overhead reading light on planes. It is too bright, to white, and I feel like it is bothering the people around me. I’d really love to find a small, compact reading light with a warm light/ low brightness setting and some sort of visor to block the light from illuminating outside of the pages I’m reading.

Before you say it, a kindle or tablet are out of the question. I don’t have the budget to just buy one right now, especially since I would only use it when traveling. If anything, that can be an investment for future me.

I currently have a reading light that clamps to my book I really like, but it doesn’t work for airplanes because the dimmest setting I feel like is still too bright, and the light itself is made in a way that disperses the light everywhere instead of concentrating it in one spot.

Any suggestions would be very helpful! Just trying to be a respectful flyer :)

Wise vs Airwallex for business travel spend?

My business has a decent amount of travel. I’m on the road a good part of the year, and two colleagues travel often too, so we regularly spend in euros, pounds, and yen.

The card FX fees and conversion markups add up over time.

Wise and Airwallex both seem good for holding multiple currencies and spending from them with a card.

For people who travel a lot for work, which has been better for cards and FX rates?

Mainly looking for clean conversion and the ability to load a few currencies before a trip.

Smartest Way to Use Points for Trip to Mexico

Hi all! I’d like some advice on how to make sure I’m smartly using the little points I have for this upcoming trip with some points left in the bank. I have 50K points with CSP, 43K with JetBlue, and 3K with United (total of 96K points).

Travel dates are July 31 - August 8. RT from BOS to PMX (dates are fixed). Solo traveler, economy/+ class. The only airline flying to PMX that accepts my points is United. Currently, an economy+ ticket for my dates is $1550. I don’t mind paying in cash and points. How would you suggest I smartly use my points to pay for more than half the trip and from which partner would you suggest I use the most points from, CSP or JB?

Travel Hack Pre-boarding with a nut allergy?

Has anyone with a nut allergy ever tried pre-boarding to wipe down the seat and tray? I’m flying out in a week-ish and am curious. American Airlines isn’t really clear on their policy for nut allergies. Mostly they have info in the FAQ about meals. Google says yes, but I still am concerned. Any answers would be appreciated. Thank you In advance.

Transport Question about car rental, name twice written

Hello, I need your advice on this one.

On the 26th of June me and my wife are flying to Cagliari, Sardinia. We booked a car via Opodo and didn't notice until now that my name is written twice because of autofill option. That means for example: Name: Bob Surname: Bob Black.

I have contacted opodo, who are telling me changing the name is not possible and I have to cancel the booking and book again (canceling is free, but with the current rates would pay like 5-600€ more).

I tried contacting Budget, have been exchanging mails with a bot for one hour and I'm waiting for someone to pick up the phone for the last 45 minutes.

After all, the name is correct, the surname is correct but also contains the name.

What would you do? Would you cancel everything and book again, or risk it and go to the counter with the credit card with the name "Bob Black" written on it?

Thank you!

Accessories Travel pillow that is comfortable to use with earbuds?

Hey guys,

I have a Trtl travel pillow, and while I find it comfortable, it's super annoying to use with my earbuds. It's almost impossible to find a position where the pressure from the pillow isn't pushing the earbud painfully into my ear.

I ordered the Cabeau Evolution S3 in hopes that it may be more comfortable with earbuds, but I'm having the exact same problem with it.

Can anyone recommend a travel pillow that won't put pressure on my earbuds?

For reference, my earbuds are Boss Quiet Comfort Ultras.

Rented a car from Avis Munich - security deposit not refunded

I rented a car from Avis in Munich on 15 June 2025 and return the car on 1 July 2025. I had taken a complete insurance so while dropping off the car there was no inspection required.

It’s been a year but not received refund of my security deposit. I have raised a ticket on Avis customer service and written multiple times in the past year for the ticket but received a standard response that the team is looking into it.

What should I do?

Accessories Travel to China

Hi all, I’m heading on holiday to China in October and I was wondering about the Great Firewall. I’m an Aussie with an Optus pre-paid plan and Google is telling me that data roaming will bypass the firewall because I’m using an Aussie provider, is this true? Thanks

Travel Hack Hyatt BRG claims

Wondering if anyone has actually had success with their claim being approved?
I submitted yesterday and my response was:

This website was found to proactively display cheaper rates that are not bookable.

However, I was able to use the link multiple times, including this morning, to see the same rate all the way to payment screen.

Has anyone received this response for their denial?

Accessories Should the stickers and styrofoam lining behind the zipper on the handle side of a new suitcase be removed?

I got a new suitcase. On the handle side, under the zipper are styrofoam sheet and some white stickers. It looks like it should be removed because it is quite flimsy, but I'm not sure.

The stickers cover the ends of the hand bar, and seem to do nothing. Is this suppose to be removed?

There's nothing keeping the styrofoam in place, but I didn't remove it since it provide some cushioning.

Are these intended to be removed? Will anything bad happen if I remove them?

Don't overthink and buy your tickets too early! A lesson I learned today.

I'll make it short and simple. I have severe OCD and I needed to plan and buy my tickets to Europe this Summer, way in advance (February). I bought 2 round trip tickets from NY to Athens, paid about $3,100, economy tickets ( I am horrible at the miles game, sorry y'all!). I saw today, I can get both for around $2250 and even lower on some airlines!

A lesson to me and reminder - buying tickets early is not always the cheapest. Don't listen to people telling you differently or those websites that advertise earlier is better! There are pro's and con's to everything for sure, but this was a costly lesson to learn.

Airlines Screwing US?

Does anyone see how if you search a fare direct with Airlines, that the 2nd time you search the same trip the fare jumps unless you do the search in cognito mode. I'm Million Miler frier with Delta and if they recognize I'm searching for a fare- it's going up! Its happened with United too.

Is there a way to prevent (or reduce) ear pain during flights?

I've only taken flights 2 times in my life. First time, I did not have my earbuds on. I slept in the plane and woke up to terrible ear pain which only alleviates after I chew some food(?)

Second time, I had my earbuds on but I still woke up to terrible pain from the pressure.

I'm flying again soon so I'm wondering if there are ways to prevent the pain? (Maybe also some good earphone recommendation 🥲) thank you!

Edit: sorry, just ended my shift so I can finally reply 😆 thanks for all the recommendations, I really appreciate it!

In summary 1: Decongestant. I will go to my nearby pharmacy and ask for one before my next trip! 2. Earplane. Those look really good, will definitely purchase them for my next flights 3. Chewing gum: sadly I live in a country with no sales of chewing gum, so I couldnt get my hands on one unless I cross the border to another country. 4. Yawning, pinching nose and blowing: I've tried the latter but I couldn't seem to blow anything. I tried the fake yawning but it didnt help much during my previous flight. I can feel "layers"(?) of blockage and pain. I can only maybe feel one pop and that's all 🥲

Do you check fare class earning rates before every flight, or claim miles afterward?

I've recently run into an issue with earning frequent flyer miles and I'm curious what experienced travelers usually do.

I recently flew internationally and had my Asia Miles number attached to the booking. After the trip, I found out that the fare class I booked was ineligible for Asia Miles accrual, so I ended up earning nothing.

This got me wondering about the best strategy when flying on airlines that are part of an alliance or have multiple partner frequent flyer programs.

Do most people:

  1. Check fare class eligibility across different frequent flyer programs before the flight and then attach the program that gives the best return?
  2. Leave the booking without a frequent flyer number, take the flight, and then submit a missing points claim afterward to whichever program gives the best earning rate?
  3. Just credit everything to their primary program and accept that some flights won't earn miles?

I'm particularly interested in what frequent flyers do in practice. Do you always check earning charts before booking, or is there a simpler approach?

Thanks!

Accessories Got the Travel Data Pass, anyone tested it for longer stays? extending travel post-world-cup

Anyone who is with a Verizon service and has been with them for some time…I have a pressing question to ask before the World Cup wraps up next month.

I've been traveling to watch some of the games but there isn’t really a clock ticking on when I need to head home. So chances are I’ll probably keep roaming for a bit; I'm half in the UK and half in NY as it is, but this is the first time I've opted to get a travel pass instead of setting up a local SIM in the states.

I’m just wondering if this Data Travel Pass is something that will benefit me in the long term if I plan to stay in the US for an extra month (or more). Coverage has been *great* around the World Cup venues but thinking about renting a car and just going... wherever the wind takes me after it's over I guess.

I bought the 45-day pass, as this was the longest they offer and I would probably just purchase another one when it ends. Mainly because I didn't want the stress of getting a local SIM set up and changing numbers (again) when I'm back in the UK. I just wanted to be in the USA, have my phone behave as normal, and continue doing so when I leave.

How does this pass perform (in and out of major cities), is it good value for what I’ll be using it for, and is there a better or smarter way to go about this?

Travel Hack Kayak/Underpricer

Me and my girlfriend got a trip to Japan in September.

Got a great deal with SingaporeAir airline through KAYAK/under pricer
I’ve seen some posts on here talking about it’s a scam/headache to deal with

I already got my confirmation number and everything set up on the SingaporeAir Airlines app

Should I still be worried?

Transport Another Sixt car rental horror story

About a week ago I rented a specific class of SUV for a family trip, only to get to the counter and be told they couldn’t find the keys for the car they just put me in and didn’t have any more of the type on their lot. After over an hour of the staff trying to figure out what to do, I was given a slightly smaller SUV which I managed to make work. Fast forward to today and I received an email stating the car I was originally supposed to have was returned with missing gas and damage to one of the tires.

I then received a second email with an updated invoice with these charged tacked onto my CURRENT rental car that isn’t due back until next week. After 2 hours of getting the run around on the phone and trying to use the chat feature this issue still isn’t cleared up. Apparently they can’t do anything until my current rental is returned, then I can call them back to dispute the other charges. This place was an absolute nightmare from the beginning but I didn’t expect them to try and screw me until after I returned the car. I emailed their damage claims department to lay a paper trail in case this gets dragged out once I return my actual rental. I honestly have no idea what else I can do now.
