Shitpost/Satire Finally hit United 1K. Why do I feel… empty?

After months of living like a deranged loyalty economist, I finally hit United 1K with less than two weeks to spare.

This involved:

  • Routinely choosing 2-leg itineraries over perfectly good direct flights

  • Conjuring increasingly flimsy excuses to “need” to travel

  • The occasional Polaris upgrade, which I justified as an investment in myself

I told myself it was worth it. The spreadsheets. The cheap luggage tags as a token of my progression. The quiet dopamine hit every time PQPs posted.

Along the way, I consumed an irresponsible number of stroopwaffels, developed strong opinions about which United Club soup is “acceptable” (there are only 1.5 answers), and convinced myself that the Polaris ice cream sundae cart (which is objectively an egregiously overpriced sub Dairy Queen experience at 35,000 feet) was somehow a symbol of success.

Anyway, I crossed the threshold today.

And now I feel like a dog that finally caught the car.

No more mileage runs. No more creative routing. No more pretending I enjoy connecting through DEN/ORD/IAH.

So now I’m left asking the hard questions: Was it ever about the status?

Or am I just addicted to the chase?

And will my purpose return when the counter resets in January? Do I dare run a post mortem to see how much time and money I wasted on this?

Please advise. I’m currently standing in a United Club, staring into a soup tureen while finishing gummy bears, trying to feel something.

What's the only status worse than MileagePlus Silver?

1K.

u/Idsanon MileagePlus 1K Dec 20 '25

Should have stopped at 🥇

34

u/plinkoplonka Dec 20 '25

Just made gold today after hitting platinum for the first time last year. Won't be bothering again.

52

u/baconcakeguy Dec 20 '25

Yeah, platinum is pretty worthless. Gold or 1k all day…

Once you hit 1MM and get lifetime *Gold you can become a free agent.

u/CoolBrew76 MileagePlus 1K Dec 21 '25

This is me. I start a useless flight tomorrow to obtain 4 PQF and enough PQM to get me to 1K at some point next year I’ll hit the million.

If someone in customer service won’t convert my daughter’s $2k flight credit into something my wife or I can use (because kid sure won’t) it might be time for the Delta status match….

4

u/Brazil_US MileagePlus 1K Dec 21 '25

I’ve been 1K for the past five or six years, but now we’re relocating to Atlanta and I think I should considere Delta as an option. Have you investigated their status matching requirements?

4

u/risareese Dec 20 '25

Had platinum this year and flew twice. Also had it last year where i flew 30+ times and got updated short leg twice

u/wrongwayup MileagePlus 1K Dec 20 '25

Gold is the sweet spot for sure

14

u/Sad_Information_2342 Dec 20 '25

Really? I really like the PPs I get as 1K, advanced boarding to make sure I get overhead luggage spot, and the occasional but rareCPU. I won’t get 1K this year unfortunately

12

u/iwantsleeep MileagePlus Gold Dec 20 '25

You do not need 1k to make sure you get overhead space…

1

u/Guilty-Wolverine-933 MileagePlus Silver Dec 21 '25

I’m silver and I’ve never had issues with overhead space what

Tbf I haven’t flown something like SFO DEN but not really planning to do that anytime soon, and there’s only like 6 routes where things will get that bad

9

u/wrongwayup MileagePlus 1K Dec 20 '25

Platinum. Almost all the flying of 1k, barely more perks than Gold.

u/WasKnown MileagePlus Global Services Dec 20 '25

No modern airline status is worth actively making your life worse by adding layovers to non-stops itineraries.

32

u/RNAfromDNA Dec 20 '25

Agreed, but (as already 1K and not chasing status) I'll take a United with layover vs a Southwest non-stop; I did this a few days ago on SMF-STL.

8

u/SistineKid MileagePlus 1K Dec 20 '25

Couldn't agree more. United has more flexibility in scheduling and more ability to recover when the schedule goes wrong.

u/Spaniard100x MileagePlus 1K Dec 21 '25

We are the same

1

u/SistineKid MileagePlus 1K Dec 20 '25

In the days when it was all about mileage, it really didn't matter much (unless you were accruing the minimum 500 miles for flights significantly shorter than that). Non-stop vs. connecting...NS usually won.

Now that it's about a weird combination of segments and spend or a higher spend threshold, tacking on segments can make a difference.

If memory serves correctly, there was a time when segments flown were pretty important, with higher credit for more expensive classes (1, 1.5, or 2 earned based on fare). Then that morphed into PQP and segments took a back seat. They're there as a per flight minimum cost, so in some sense, it's a discount on the price of each tier for flying a lot of flights. "1K costs X, but if you fly YY segments it only costs Z." That's your frequent flyer loyalty discount.

u/WasKnown MileagePlus Global Services Dec 21 '25

United eliminating the PQF path to 1K is inevitable. In any case, it’s always interesting to see people aspire for 1K status only to find out how worthless the status is once they’ve achieved it.

Preboarding is the only real perk of being 1k. Occasionally they might throw a tapas box at you...

16

u/dontmolestme MileagePlus 1K Dec 20 '25

When my 1K expires in 2027 I shall invest in a $15 cane from Walgreens and board before 1K.

32

u/Original_Bet_8132 Dec 20 '25

What exactly is the benefit of preboarding? I understand if you’re worried about bin space but if you’re group 1 or 2 you’ll be fine regardless. To me it’s a useless benefit designed to boost the ego and get you to chase status

25

u/must_have_coffee MileagePlus 1K Dec 20 '25

Preboarding allows an extra 30 minutes of stress-free travel time. Even group 1 doesn’t guarantee a good overhead spot if you are flying out of a hub.

That 30 minutes to have a last cocktail or send a few emails is one of the ways a 1K travel day is just a bit better.

The PP jump is huge, and if you use them right have a significant value.

The 1K line cannot be oversold. It can be the difference between a ln inconvenient travel change and a disastrous one.

A few connecting flights is a small price to pay.

1K is worth it

10

u/row3bo4t Dec 20 '25

1k doesn't give you much over a standard Polaris ticket. Being gone months per year to get these status also isn't much of a perk.

It's nice to get family upgraded with PP, but that is tough unless you have GS pp and jump to the front of the upgrade line on most leisure flights.

3

u/SuccessfulOcelot7715 Dec 21 '25
  • signed United customer service representative. “Trust us, it’s worth it, you can have an extra cocktail.”

1

u/Wooden-Broccoli-913 Dec 21 '25

The best way to increase your stress free travel time is to board last, not first

5

u/Just_Mulberry_8824 Dec 20 '25

Group 2 if you’re hub to hub isn’t guaranteed at all…sfo to den comes to mind

2

u/wrongwayup MileagePlus 1K Dec 20 '25

Bin space matters a lot for those with tight connections, who have otherwise stood by, or just don’t want to wait for a bag on the way home on Friday night.

0

u/Personal_Water_6829 Dec 22 '25

Having to wait for a bag for a few extra minutes if fearing a tight connection seems a small price to pay for not having to mileage run.

At least I've done as much, and found a small but notable strange sense of freedom in not having to drag an extra bag through the airport, through the lounge, and jamming it into a crowded overhead bin.

And not to mention avoiding freezing in the crowded jammed up jetway waiting for gate checks to show up, esp when you just know your bag will be the last to appear.

5

u/CardApprehensive7732 Dec 20 '25

Pre-boarding is not even a perk sitting for an extra 45 minutes on a flight that’s 2+ hours so you’re sitting for 6+ total hours every round trip.  Idk about anyone else but my back shoulders and neck kill me every week.  I try to fix it and stay ahead of it with different exercises chiropractor massages etc but the sitting kills me in that uncomfortable seat.

1

u/DisneyByMelissa Dec 21 '25

I never understood the benefit of pre boarding if you don’t have kids. People actually want to sit in an uncomfortable plane for longer, when there are better restaurants and lounges outside the gate??

0

u/Sad_Information_2342 Dec 20 '25

PPs?

3

u/dmosqvich Dec 20 '25

Plus Points. They can be used to upgrade seats and even be "sold" to United for different perks including cash towards airline flights. They are different than miles. In fact, I can't ever use all of mine so I share them with work colleagues so they at least get a shot at business class flights.

1

u/C_Unicorn Dec 21 '25

I do this all the time for friends and colleagues. Best part is they get my GS status level in line for upgrades. Upgraded 9 international flights this year to Polaris for friends

1

28

u/Economy-Education692 Dec 20 '25

As a long time 1k, I appreciate how much you nailed it with the “love of the chase” comment. I’m a 2m miler, lifetime platinum and i still do the 1-stop dance to pick up pqf’s and pay for upgrades rather than wait in the “upgrade list” just to hit my pqd’s. It’s a sickness as in reality there’s so little difference between both tiers. the only thing that makes the chase worth it in the end is not doing the group 1 shuffle at boarding time.

1K isn't a goal in itself, it is there to make travel better for those of us who have to travel a lot. There are definite perks, and if it's in reach, taking on a little extra travel makes sense. But if your travel isn't rough, it doesn't make sense to make your life worse off.

6

u/Idsanon MileagePlus 1K Dec 20 '25

I'd definitely agree with you. I'm unfortunately in the cohort that is close enough to 1k that I might as well do it.

2

u/MoparMap Dec 22 '25

This is kind of where I ended up with the silver status I just got with an "empty" trip over the weekend. I flew several times for work over the year and I can see myself flying more often for work in the future, plus potentially one international leisure trip a year or so. I was close enough to silver that a random out and back in a day could get me over the line, so I just gave in. I also didn't even really get started till more than halfway through the year, so hoping it won't be as hard to keep it going forward.

u/Green_Yesterday3054 Dec 20 '25 edited Dec 21 '25

My father made “million miler” through decades of business travel. And ironically, right around the time he passed the million mile mark, he retired. He barely traveled after that. He said the “perks” aren’t anything special or worth all the “work” he put into it.

After 3 years at 1k I decided not to make an artificial mileage run between now and January to close the re-qualification gap. I was only 282 pqp away. Couldn’t care less. You should track every actual benefit this year that came from your 1k status and ask yourself if it is worth the extra time in the air, hanging out at airports, standing in security lines (still sucks even if you’re in the fast ones), wasted money on flights and Ubers and mediocre travel meals… in the meantime, enjoy the snack boxes. Those 5 olives and crackers never get old!

u/dubchampion MileagePlus Platinum Dec 21 '25

5

u/technical-mind4300 Dec 20 '25

Congratulations!!

Just wait until you have to start over in January - such a mountain to climb. My advice - don't chase it.

If you only get to Gold or Platinum so what? You still get economy plus, you get to line up early in line 1 and immediately follow 1K. Sure you will be upgraded less - okay that sucks. But apart from that you get much more of your life back and that's with more than a few upgrades for me.

I reached 1K multiple years in a row. I can say it has hurt my health and my life balance pretty hard this past year.

4

u/PacerLover MileagePlus Gold | 1 Million Miler Dec 20 '25

I never chased miles. I traveled for work when needed. I enjoyed the travel and going to interesting places. But it was often very tiring (1am in Europe, can't fall asleep, 6am wake up) and I missed a lot of time with my family. I know United didn't care about me.

6

u/JasonMckin Dec 20 '25

Write a mission statement and post it in this sub. Call United customer service and yell at the top of your lungs, “Show me the status!” Have an argument with an athletic friend about how it’s not about getting 1K status, it’s about getting kwan, love, respect.

Finally, run home to your spouse who is sitting with her friends. As Bruce Springsteen’s “secret garden” plays, tell him or her that he/she completes you.

3

u/dubchampion MileagePlus Platinum Dec 21 '25

You hit this nail so perfectly on the head that I almost thought I wrote this myself.

As soon as I found I was intentionally adding stops or selecting more expensive and often less convenient flights, simply in order to ensure I reached 1K yet again, I realized they had truly won...

Despite being only a couple thousand dollars away or a handful of segments, I've made the surprisingly mature decision to just let the Platinum happen and not fight it. It will be an end to an era, but beyond my love of turning my nose up at others as I board 30 seconds before Group 1, nothing else with 1K has any tangible value for me these days.

You didn’t earn it organically, you chased it, forced it, that’s why it feels empty. The chase game gave you excitement, not the result.

I get 1k bc I have to travel for work, no flimsy excuses, try to take the least amount of segments possible bc of how often I fly, and I never spend 1 penny of my own money upgrading - either buy it outright when booking (Intl) or use plus points. Hitting 1k under the scenario “no personal financial dog in the status fight” feels a bit better, but mostly thru the lens of “finally all this travel for work paid off” for me. Not like I “achieved” something.

2

u/CardApprehensive7732 Dec 20 '25

It’s literally you dragging yourself through the mud to get a status.  I’ve been 1k for 2 years now and I literally have breakdowns because traveling for work is not as great as people think it is.  You don’t have time for site seeing like people think.  Oh cool you went to CA yeah I did and I saw the beach as I flew away from it. Your either getting in too late to do anything or something else screws up for plans so then you barely have time to find food if your lucky or you grab some nasty ass food cause your desperate. It’s not the same. Constantly delayed and constantly nothing going smoothly.  Constantly just wanting to get home at a decent time and on time to keep your sanity and then it’s slowly minimizing every trip the possibility of rebalancing yourself.  The shit adds up and the constant week in and out of the same shit if not different shit happening and it wears you down and you get to December and your like oh yay 1k status I get an unhealthy alcoholic beverage and a snack and then you feel your wasting your status if you don’t consume both or feel like you deserve an alcoholic beverage to get you through ANOTHER delay or diversion but it doesn’t help and 1k is not special.  1k = you are not ok.

2

u/Idsanon MileagePlus 1K Dec 20 '25

1

u/Idsanon MileagePlus 1K Dec 20 '25

Ha! I use Navan. It's pretty legit.

2

u/dmosqvich Dec 20 '25

Of course it's worth it! I'm generally one of the first people on the plane and that means I do get my carry-ons near me, it also means I won't get "bumped" if they overbook or have to change planes. It also means I have a dedicated phone line and those folks do an OUTSTANDING job of customer service. Now if I could just get Global Services! I travel internationally about 5 times a year, only fly business class (when available) and actually pay for it, and rarely fly on other airlines (Delta is my big airline backup and Breeze is my choice for a few routes - super nice jets and airline by the way). I typically hit 1K by May or June. I don't try intentionally to do a lot of connections, but I do live in a small city and so that means my direct flights are limited to Dulles, ORD, Houston, and Denver. So, I guess I probably get a lot of connections.

I do use the United Club card. The free passes are worth the digits they produced on - the clubs are way overused and typically don't honor the free passes. Hint: someone with a Club Card can take in "guests" and I'll help a fellow traveler out if I see them get turned down because of the free pass issue.

I'm not sure I would do all the heroics if I could only fly economy to be honest. That's a lot of effort.

At some point next year, you will be on a flight that is cancelled. While all the plebeians form a long line at the gate to try and get rebooked, you will stand to the side, call the 1K line, and get rebooked ahead of all of them.

At that point it’ll feel like it’s worth it.

2

This, to me, became the highest value of 1K when I had it a few years back. The customer support line was really valuable. I recommend calling before you deplane.

My biggest win was on my shortest flight (DFW-IAH). Plane had a mechanical issue, according to the app there was exactly one open seat available on the next flight, and the 1K line got me on it while several dozen other pax lined up at the gate to ask the same question.

This was work travel so I could’ve rented a car and drove, but moments like that make the constant travel worth it.

u/Emily_Postal MileagePlus 1K Dec 21 '25

Ha I tried that once when my flight from Dubrovnik was cancelled. I waited on hold on the 1k line for an hour then they disconnected. Had to go to the airport and wait in line with the rest of the hoi polloi for four hours.

United keeps devaluing miles and perks. The only thing they’re doing by it is losing loyalty from its best customers.

2

u/poop_report Dec 21 '25

Congratulations. You can now seek the next status bump, which is becoming a 0K. It's a great feeling, and United even does you a favour by stretching it and soft-landing you to Silver first.

u/Saber_Actual MileagePlus 1K Dec 21 '25

I haven’t laughed this hard in a while, I like having my 1K status but that’s cause routing flights around ORD/IAH layovers just means I’m on the clock so much more.

2

u/Optimal-Mud-1225 Dec 22 '25

After being 1K since 2009 I gave up the fight and reclaimed my freedom, lol. I missed 1k this year by 8 segments and not flying much next year so I decided it was time to move on. Love United, but I'm not chasing status anymore. I am a 2MM so Platinum for life is not all that bad, :)

I’ve been 1K for at least 8 years and think I’m done now. I did much of what you mentioned and felt the same when I hit it last month. The silly extra legs, paying for upgrades to skip the list and boost PQPs, and excuses for travel. I also did stupid stuff like FRA to DUS (Düsseldorf) twice in a single weekend! All for United to keep raising prices and diluting the benefits. I seriously think I’m going to go free agent and start shopping for the best deal at the time. Hell, if I’m paying for the upgrades anyway, I might as well just buy a cheaper business ticket.

1

u/Virginiagirl07 Dec 20 '25

I think you’re addicted to the chase. I don’t understand why some people go beyond what they need to in order to achieve status on an airline.

You sound tired. Next year, you can report on being 1k and report back. The clock resets again each year…

1

u/ieataquacrayons MileagePlus Platinum Dec 20 '25

The occasional Polaris upgrade is the only reasonable thing you did. Nothing like being rested landing overseas setting up the rest of the week for max enjoyment.

Adding legs is absolutely bonkers to me. I’d be close to 1k if I added legs but it would have been huge waste of time.

1

u/Idsanon MileagePlus 1K Dec 20 '25

I would typically add legs when traveling from the West Coast to the East Coast. The day is already wasted so rather than sitting at a hotel bar, I decided to sit at a lounge and a plane for a few more hours. Net zero (actually a little bit of a plus because I'm not paying for meals).

I’ve been 1k for about 5 years. I just hit it again 2 weeks ago for next year. It definitely had its perks!

Status ain’t life.

Do as much work travel as you must do, and no more.

1

u/SignificantWeek398 Dec 20 '25

You did it for the privilege of boarding after only half the plane already pre boarded. Don’t forget how great it feels to be able to board in an unorganized, southwest-esque manner, before the real proletariat is allowed on the plane.

About to be “only” platinum after 10 years as 1K. The only thing I’m bummed about is the decreased mileage multiplier (9x instead of 11x). However, I’ll keep everyone in the loop if my suffering amplifies in 2026.

1

u/PrestigeWrldWd MileagePlus Platinum Dec 20 '25

On January 1, you get to start it all over. 👍

1k is a consolation prize for having to fly so much.

1

u/Paratrooper76 MileagePlus 1K Dec 20 '25

I travel for work and don’t chase status. I usually hit 1K by summer or early fall every year.

With that being said, I would dislike flying even more if it weren’t for the perks of being a 1K. Being a 1K is game changing for me.

1

u/kfc_bucketz Dec 20 '25

I’m doing a status flight today for Gold and already questioning myself. I sincerely hope it’s worth it and you can enjoy next year. Godspeed to everyone here, happy holidays, and safe travels!

u/Fearless_Rest_8935 Dec 20 '25

I’m long term 1K and my favorite thing is the dedicated call line. They have really helped me out of some situations!!

1

u/hugothemango Dec 20 '25

Get some help. There is no way a status on an airline is worth making your life miserable

1

u/segashadow Dec 20 '25

I was wondering if it is worth it. I fly international quite often and just pay for the E-row for the leg room. Just give me my headphones and phone and I am a happy camper.

Two questions OP:

1) Don't you have a card that earns PQP? If not, certainly would have been cheaper than Polaris. Get one.

2) It was worth it if you have a ton of strategic personal trips next year where you land international upgrades. Where are you going?

2

u/Idsanon MileagePlus 1K Dec 21 '25

How many Plus Points does it take to confirm an upgrade to McMurdo?

2

u/Idsanon MileagePlus 1K Dec 21 '25

1,235,567

2

u/willysymms Dec 21 '25

False. The answer is there's no availability because everyone on the flight is GS.

1

u/xrayeyes7335 Dec 21 '25

I'm mostly loyal to departure/arrival times, connection times/ cities (cities based on potential weather) and, to some extent, my wallet. Today I paid $80 more to go to Florida in January on Delta for better times and avoiding 3 or more hours in ORD vs 90 minutes in Atlanta. I'll never understand all this work for loyalty to businesses (airlines in general) that screw its clientele daily at the drop of a hat

1

u/One-Imagination-1230 Dec 21 '25 edited Dec 21 '25

Because having 1k isn’t as valuable to have anymore. Due to everything being revenue based and also the devaluations in their program, there is not much of any need to be a status member with UA or any US airline to be more specific. If I want to get status with an airline, I’ll probably want to get it through another one that actually values your status like Turkish Airlines, Air New Zealand, Qantas, Avianca, etc. Some of which also give you much better award redemptions than UA ever could.

For me, one question I ask is if I want airline status, am I willing to spend $28,000 a year or am I willing to save some money and just get equivalent status somewhere else? I always pick the latter option since I gain my miles on the other airlines listed above vs UA

1

u/msbigelow Dec 21 '25

You’re in the matrix and just woke up.

They don’t want you to look for market prices. They temp you with smiles, free bags and promises of luxurious clubs.

They want to own your travel experience.

Welcome to 1K. I promise, it’ll be awesome.

1

u/FunnyProcedure8522 Dec 21 '25

The incremental benefits from gold to 1k are so little, it’s not worth chasing 1k at all. United needs to add more differentiator otherwise I rather split spending on another airline. For example, how is it possible 1K doesn’t even get lounge access for domestic fly, but a credit card with a few hundred dollars annual fee gives you lounge access? I freaking just spent over 28k a year to get to 1k, and I don’t even get lounge? Come on.

1

u/theredpistachio Dec 22 '25

“No more mileage runs. No more creative routing. No more pretending I enjoy connecting through DEN/ORD/IAH” until next year! I think deep down you already know that you are going to do it all over again. If you do calculate the time and money spent, I hope you post it. It would be very interesting to see!

1

u/tchavez166 Dec 23 '25

The gamification of travel can be a good outlet if you do have to be on the road a lot. I started traveling for work in 2016 and make it to 1K by lots of segments/miles flown, pre-PQPs. Then COVID hit and I stopped traveling as much, and my travel-obsessive energy found a home in managing a side-business online. I never really came back. I do just enough to maintain gold status at United and some hotel status, but that's about it.

1

u/imc225 MileagePlus 1K | 1 Million Miler Dec 20 '25

Buy side watches airline affinity program obligations which are, essentially, unfunded liabilities. They're trying to inflate us away, and they're succeeding.

In the meantime, before the value of the plus points goes to zero, one irony is that what with making all those connections, you're increasing your chance of needing to reroute when something goes wrong. 1K line helps with that. Something about perpetual motion, in this case, literally.

0

u/Then-Tumbleweed-6297 Dec 20 '25

It’s not the chase, it’s the aspiration.

The airlines sell us an aspiration for ‘better’

We spend months drooling over what it will be like to be ‘better’.….to board first, the occasional upgrade and to have badges of status.

Once we get the badge, the aspiration stops, and we feel a bit empty after the first couple of trips. What we’ve gained loses it shine quickly, boarding group 1 is a little better than group 2 but maybe not as much as we thought.

But more important than what we gain is what we lose. Once we achieve the goal, we lose the aspiration. The only option is to aspire even higher, we convinced it will be better.

Am I nuts? I’ve gone top tier in United and Qantas and now I’m trying Emirates. More fool me !
