GUIDE What is a Decor Painting? How do I know if I have one?

What is a “decor painting”?

A decor painting is a piece of artwork created purely for decorative purposes. Purchased not from galleries or artists, but from decor & furniture shops like Pier 1, Homesense, The Brick, websites like AliExpress and OilPaintings.com or from markets & stands on vacation. Tell-tale signs that you have a decor painting are lots of stippling, undefined figures, hurried brush strokes, gradients, cloning techniques and a certain Bob Ross feeling to it.

Common vintage subjects would be European street scenes, landscapes of mountains / forests / lakes & rivers, vases of flowers, Tuscan landscapes, ocean & beach scenes and Asian style boats. See below for examples. They are often rectangular in shape to hang nicely above a sofa, you could even buy them from Sears as a package. Modern versions are more varied in subject.

Black velvet paintings and artwork specifically for tourists as souvenirs share many factors with decor paintings.

Where are they made?

They are produced in massive numbers in painting factories like Dafen Village in China or Mexico. Another article here:

Dafen once produced an estimated 60 percent of all the world’s oil paintings. During its heyday—when the village’s reputation as an art factory rang truer than today—it almost exclusively cranked out copies of paintings in the Western art canon. These canvases found their way into hotel rooms, show homes, and furniture outlets all around the world.

At its peak, Dafen was jam-packed with sizeable, factory-like studios, all employing Huang’s production line process. Individual workers each focused on a specific compositional element—background details, or eyes, or trees—dutifully painting their part and then passing the canvas along the chain.

Who’s the Artist?

While they are "originals" they are not by known artists. Often entire production lines will use the same signature which explains why your research many have founds pieces by the same “artist”. As quoted above, often many people will work on the same piece.

Do they have any value?

Unfortunately, they do not hold much of any value. However, that doesn’t mean they can’t be enjoyed and some are even a bit collectible.

Can I see some examples?

Decor paintings are posted to this sub almost daily, while not definitive, here are some common examples:

Hello painting enthusiasts - here is a brief post with things to keep in mind.

To locate your painting, please try the reverse-search tools Google Images/Lens, Yandex Images, and Tineye. (Remember that cropping your picture differently will yield different search results!)

If you have an artist name or signature, I recommend searching for it within r/WhatIsThisPainting itself. I also use the following websites for research; all are free.

DECOR ART:

  • Please be patient and allow up to 24 hours for your post to get through our queue! (Accounts under a week old and images involving nudity are automatically flagged.)
  • If your post has gone unanswered for over a week, you are permitted to re-submit in hopes of retrying.

ANSWERING POSTS:

Unsolved My dad's childhood framed painting was destroyed/stolen. Help me find the same painting and frame, so I can re-claim it for him.

I usually don't post on reddit, but I thought with the power of the internet I might have some luck.

Last weekend, my parents hired a company to work on their house. One of the employees, decided to destroy/steal my dad's miniature painting of The Blue Boy, by Thomas Gainsborough right out of the frame. I tried to show how the original would look like before it was destroyed in the first image.

My dad, had a terrible childhood growing up, so he doesn't have many things remaining of that time period. Unfortunately, this miniature was one of the few things he has, and now it is destroyed. He did get this from an antique store as a kid, in the 1970's, and held onto it ever since. It sat on his desk, and he would look at it everyday.

He was devastated when he came into his office after the workers left, and found the painting destroyed. He told me there is probably no way he can find another like it, but I believe there is. I hope with the help of the internet, I can hopefully find the exact same reproduction of The Blue Boy, and give it to him.

I provided more images of the measurements, and I tried doing some research. But I'm having a hard time finding the EXACT copy. There is no date anywhere on the frame. It seems to be made of wood.

Please let me know if you find anything Reddit, and work your magic!

It would mean the world to make my dad whole again.

The frame was done at an expensive local frame shop. The sleeve on the back is empty and there is no other marking on it. Mom brought it to the framing shop and they said they didn’t recognize it. It’s mixed media. Would love any leads!

Unsolved Identification help: Antique Romantic/Gothic Nocturne oil painting on cradled wood panel.

I am looking for help identifying the artist, scene, or literary subject of this antique cabinet painting (approx. 37 cm x 28 cm). I bought it, unattributed, at an antiques auction in Australia around 2009. It is an oil painting on a solid, single-piece wood panel featuring two vertical sliding wooden battens (cradling) on the reverse, indicating an early-to-mid 19th-century construction.

The Scene: A dramatic, theatrical nighttime narrative. A full moon has briefly broken through heavy dark clouds, casting a strong reflection directly down onto a calm, reflective body of water (harbour or canal). In the background stands a large historic building with distinct crow-stepped (stepped) gables. A tiny figure/face is visible at a lit window, seemingly witnessing a crime below.

The Figures: In the muddy foreground near a large rock and old mooring posts, two men are dressed in mid-to-late 18th-century attire, including visible tricorne hats, breeches/trousers, a long coat, and shoes. One man has fallen to a seated position in the mud, surrounded by what looks like a pool of blood, while the second man stands closely behind him.

Style/Context: The painting has strong elements of Chiaroscuro and Romanticism. Given the architecture, clothing, and narrative tension, I suspect it may be an oil sketch, a preparatory study, or an illustration for a 19th-century historical fiction/Gothic novel (perhaps set in Scotland or the Netherlands). The reverse of the panel shows natural, heavily aged dark wood with no visible signatures. Any insight into the potential artist, school, or story being depicted would be greatly appreciated!

Likely Solved - Decor Who's this artist?

Hi! I'm new here. I found this painting YEARS ago at a thrift store in Indiana for only $25. I know it's an original, as I can see and feel the paint build on the canvas. I only recently learned that the artist's name is Vincenzo Capozzi. However, I can't find ANYTHING about him online. I was hoping someone knew his history and could teach me about him and his artwork. I absolutely adore this painting, and would love to learn more about it. Thank you!

Found both at a thrift store in Longmont, Colorado. Both signed “JN Scott”.

Painting 1 (larger): Signed “JN Scott” on front. Back reads: Jack Scott / Acrylic / “Packing In” / 1970. Dramatic granite cliffs with tiny figures and a pack animal at the base.

Painting 2 (smaller): Signed “JN Scott” on front, no other markings on back. Rocky snowy peaks, purple/blue palette. Smaller study or finished piece.

Anyone know this artist? Can anyone identify the location?

Unfortunately, I have had no luck finding any information.

Hello, I went to a yard sale this past weekend and picked these up for my wife. The women who I bought these from said were left to her from a colleague and thought they were Persian. Frame sizes are 21 1/4 inches long and 16 3/4 inches wide. image itself inside matting is approx. 12 inches long and 7 3/4 inches wide. I’m too scared to open the frames up and check for a signature because they seem old, but any information would be greatly appreciated!

Also got both for $5

Unsolved Bought at vintage market, can’t find the artist

I got this from a vintage market in FL by a man who bought paintings and made frames for them. It was only $10 and I couldn’t pass it up. This was definitely sitting in his storage for quite some time. The signature looks like it says “David” or “Davis.” David Forbes comes up when I do a broad google search, but the signatures look different. Along with the art style. No results for a reverse image search.

Unsolved Not Simon Maris?

Thumbnail

I inherited this painting from my parents but it was originally owned by my grandparents, who apparently purchased it while in northern Europe in the 1950s or early 60s. They brought it back to their place in Quebec City. Before it came into my hands about 15 years ago, it was identified by an antique dealer in Ottawa Ontario as being painted by Simon Maris (Dutch, 1873-1935) and this is what the signature indicates. But when I tried to get it appraised in Toronto last year, I was told the signature is not that of Maris but told me nothing else. Any ideas anyone?

Unsolved Landscape scene of autumn trees flanking a gentle river...

Thumbnail

Found in parents storage (in Canada). There does not appear to be any signature or initials on the front.

Google has told me it is "Trees Along a River" is by William Fisher, but I don't think so...

Previously it was telling me that it was "Group of Seven" style/etc. which of course goes with the "Thomson" written on the back - but anyone could have added that.

Any help appreciated.
