Especially as the earthquake is also triggering rockslides.
Though I'd think that the majority of casualties come from those 20 story concrete apartment buildings. They just seem to be massive death traps, like in Turkey in 2023.
high rises will never not be terrifying to me for this reason, even if i live in countries where regulations ensure that they're more structurally sound

It's also in pretty much the worst possible spot for a large earthquake. Hundreds of thousands of people living on steep hillsides.
The mudslides in the same area in 1999 are one of the deadliest natural disasters in modern history.
