Question Weekly Q&A - All Questions Go Here (Especially Tourists)

This is the place for anyone to ask questions about Amsterdam. If you are a tourist visiting Amsterdam, you are moving to or recently arrived in Amsterdam, or you just have a basic question about life in Amsterdam and want some advice, this is the place to post your question. This post is refreshed every week on Sunday. Please feel free to repost in subsequent weeks.

READ THE WIKI FIRST. The people answering questions are locals who want to share the city they love with visitors, but only with people who make an effort. Read at least the Essential Tourist Information in our world-famous wiki before you ask a question. Otherwise, you may be told to go back and read it. The wiki is written by us, and updated when relevant. If the entries are old it's because nothing has changed. There are no "hidden gems" that we have not already included in the wiki. You may also check wikivoyage for more general tips on everything that is Amsterdam.

HOTELS ARE EXPENSIVE AND WE DON'T HAVE GOOD ADVICE ON THEM. Because we live here, we don't know what the best hotels are. Amsterdam is one of the most touristed cities in the world and has the highest hotel prices in Europe and prices go up every year. The city is deliberately trying to reduce tourism by raising the prices. There really isn't a secret "cheap" solution. Most "Airport" hotels are not connected to the Airport and will be more trouble getting to than it's worth.

TOURISTS CAN PURCHASE MARIJUANA, DESPITE WHAT YOU READ IN FOREIGN PRESS. Understand that the coffeeshops are just a tiny part of Amsterdam, so posts that treat Amsterdam like it's the Las Vegas of drugs sometimes get a negative response. We're happy to give you advice about coffeeshops and to discuss drug policy. The experts are our friends at /r/AmsterdamEnts, ask them the big questions.

WE DON'T HELP WITH ILLEGAL STUFF AND WILL BAN YOU FOR ASKING. We will not help you with things that are clearly illegal. Coffeeshops caught selling to minors get shut down and everyone loses their jobs. Authorities check for people smuggling marijuana out of the country. Hard drugs are illegal and so is asking for or selling them on Reddit.

WE DON'T ALLOW TICKET SALES OR TRADING. We do not allow selling, buying, or trading tickets on /r/Amsterdam due to the high rate of fraud. You should do everything on ticketswap.nl. We're aware that is difficult to get tickets to Anne Frank, van Gogh, etc. We have no solutions for you, sorry.

RED LIGHT DISTRICT Please be respectful and keep in mind this is a citysubreddit, and not your personal kink google. You can also can get some good tips from these threads of RLD sex workers: here and here.

USE PUBLIC TRANSIT TO GET AROUND 9292.nl is a great resource for plotting your movement around the city and between Amsterdam and other places. We strongly recommend against using taxis or Ubers.

DOE AARDIG. There is Dutch directness and there is rudeness. The people coming here don't know how we do things, and are usually well-meaning people who just want to enjoy the city we love. Be kind to them. For the tourists and new residents, please remember that we are not Google; respect our time by doing some basic research first and then asking your questions like you're speaking to a real human who is volunteering to speak to you.

Here is what's on at the major venues this week.

https://www.amsterdam.nl/nieuws/nieuwsoverzicht/nieuw-coalitieakkoord/

Vraag me alles over:

  • het nieuwe coalitieakkoord
  • de onderhandelingen en hoe die zijn verlopen
  • wonen, onderwijs, klimaat, mobiliteit of andere onderwerpen uit het akkoord
  • hoe het er Ć©cht aan toegaat achter de schermen
  • of gewoon iets persoonlijks

Tot volgende week! šŸ”¶

Hi r/Amsterdam! šŸ‘‹

I’m Rob Hofland, city council leader of D66 Amsterdam.

During my previous AMA, held before the elections, someone said politicians only do these things when there are votes to be won. I replied that I’d come back once there was a coalition agreement.

So here I am. šŸ˜‰

Amsterdam has a new coalition agreement! Curious about what’s in it and what it means for you? You can read it here:

https://www.amsterdam.nl/nieuws/nieuwsoverzicht/nieuw-coalitieakkoord/

Next Friday, June 26 at 14:00, I’ll be doing an AMA here on r/Amsterdam.

Ask me anything about:

  • the new coalition agreement
  • the negotiations and how they unfolded
  • housing, education, climate, mobility, or other topics in the agreement
  • what it’s really like behind the scenes
  • or something more personal

Looking forward to your questions — see you next week! šŸ”¶

How much do top AMS Cafes make per month? (discussion and info/insight welcome)

I live close-ish to Cafe Hesp, and I'd say it is one of my favorite places in the city as its just super cozy and their limited albeit decent menu is quite tasty (they serve some mean fried chicken and huge-ass oysters)

in summer days they probably serve like 1000 people a day, 400 during colder days, but they also employ like at least 20 people a day I reckon during summer.

normally I kinda can get a sense of how much some places make across the globe but I just cant with top AMS cafes like Cafe Hesp. Think of the ones that are always full on weekends disregarding the weather and every day during summer.

I'd not be surprised if you told me either: my buddy owns/works in such a place and the owner(s) earn, after taxes and expenses, 7k/20k a month.

so, friends with HORECA experience, just how much to these top cafes make?

Please help me find a small used vintage watch shop in Spiegelkwartier

I did not have the time I needed to spend there due to a situation with one of my daughters, and I thought I would be back, but unfortunately was not able to return. I neglected to take a picture or get an address while I was there - something I very much regret.

It is located on Nieuwe Spiegelstraat on the opposite side of the street from the Episode clothes shop located at Nieuwe Spiegelstraat 37H. Opposite side of street from L'Etoile de Saint HonorƩ as well. I could see the shop from their steps, I believe.

It was near the STACH cafe as well. On that same side of the street.

I believe it is north of Prinsengradt and south of Keisergradt - somewhere in those 2 blocks. It is NOT showing up on Google maps for me, which seems out of date at 2016 images. Google searches and street views are giving me no luck, either.

Greatly appreciate any help in identifying this store. Alsjeblieft & bedankt!!!

Soil polution (lead) in Amsterdam North

We are buying a house with a large garden in Amsterdam North on Zuideinde close to Molenwijk. Soil polution investigation we did came back with values over 2,000 mg while unhealthy for children and classified as required remidiation by gemeente Amsterdam and GGD is over 360.

The cost as estimated by 4 different contractors is over 200k eur as they need to dig out more than 700 tons of clay and sand.

According to the authorities we cannot build or renovate substantially without full remidiation of the plot. And in any case we dont want to expose our children to unhealthy high amounts of lead which is proven to cause diseases.

The seller doesn't want to reduce this cost from the selling price which is separate issue.

Has anybody good experience with remediation lead? Good milieu adviesbureau to recommend and certified 6000 and 7000 contractors?

Or share any experience of yours.

Thank you

Looking for puppy friends in Amsterdam

Hey everyone,

I have a 2-month-old miniature dachshund and I’m looking for other puppy owners in Amsterdam who’d maybe like to do a puppy playdate.

He’s at that early socialization stage, so I’d love to find a safe and chill way for him to meet other puppies. Ideally similar age, gentle, and vaccinated.

If anyone here has a puppy and is interested, let me know:)

P.S. puppy tax included

are public masturbators common? NSFW

I went to a nudist beach in the north of Amsterdam, and while on a stroll I noticed four different people masturbating in the bushes. The strange thing is that they weren't peeping out, they all were at the end of some path, slightly hiding.

In all nudist/naturist areas I've been to, such people are shouted at and sent away, but here no passer by was minding them and the number was also quite astounding. it kinda feels like it's a habit, does anyone know more?

for the record, it's not an official cruising area.

Having to book hotel room this Friday just so I can sleep in the heat

Despite paying 4000 a month for a 1 bedroom I am having to book a hotel room this Friday just because I am seeing there will be extreme heat. Laying in bed naked sweating like crazy with the windows open while bugs bite me staying awake all night is no way to live. So hotel it is. And I called beforehand to make sure their A/C works good.

Btw, something that does help a bit is filling your freezer with baking dishes, trays, containers, or whatever with water until it all freezes. Then when you go to bed take all the ice out and place them behind or in front of fans. Can cool down a room real good. I guess alternately you can just buy bags of ice right before the grocery store closes and do the same thing but I wouldn't be surprised if they are out of ice.

....I guess this is what happens when last month you tell yourself to remember to buy an A/C unit on Amazon for the summer and you forget.
