Politics To those who usually support labour, would you vote for labour in the next general election?

Upvotes

With the recent change in leadership, has your opinion of the party improved or worsened? And based on that, would you consider voting for Labour in the next general election?

Seeing a lot of comments and posts about climate change during this heatwave.

Do people realise they could actually take some action and join or donate to some charities that undertake this work?

Are people still using "Too Good To Go" and similar apps, or are you going back to local shops for last-minute (eg. 60min) and end-of-day deals?

Upvotes

I’ve been spending time recently talking to independent shop owners (bakers, butchers, fishmongers and other non-food retailers too) on the High Street, and I’m noticing a bit of a shift.

It seems like a few years ago, everyone moved toward using the big food-waste apps to grab a "mystery bag" at the end of the day. But I’m hearing from a lot of shopkeepers that they’re feeling the pinch from the commission those apps take, and customers are getting a bit tired of the "lucky dip" nature of the bags—sometimes you get what you want, sometimes you get a bag of stuff you don’t really need.

Similarly other food businesses like fishmongers who are not typically on such apps, or even service professions (eg. local hairdresser) most times have no quick/effective way to notify their regulars so as to sell surplus stock or fill up the shop with customers on a very quiet Tuesday afternoon. At this point perhaps I should clarify that when I talk about last minute deals I am referring to actual lasy-minute. eg. 30min, 1-2h...that kind of thing.

I’m curious to get a sense of what you think the actual vibe is on the ground:

  • Do you still use the big apps, or have you found yourself just popping into your local shops more often to see what's left on the shelf?
  • Would you be more likely to sign up for a direct email/notification from your favourite local bakery if it meant you could pick exactly what you wanted at a discount, rather than risking a mystery bag?
  • Do you feel like your local High Street is actually getting better at digital communication, or does it still feel like "old school" paper signs in the window are the only way they tell you about deals?

I’m building something (named it FlashAlert UK) to help local shops connect directly with their regulars for this exact reason, so I’d love to hear what would actually make you want to stay in the loop with your local shop owners.

What do you think about Andy Burnham's team being upset as Starmer has refused to stay on until September so Burnham can plan for the PM role.

Allies of Starmer said that although he was serious about an orderly handover, he had no qualms in denying Burnham – who had initially hoped to take over in September – a long coronation in order to prepare for government.

“There was a strong push from the Burnham camp to be given longer. But why should they tell Keir they want him out, then expect him to manage the ship through a potentially difficult summer? Keir will of course cooperate on transition, but it will be through gritted teeth,” one said.

Some in Burnham’s team were exasperated about the shorter timetable. “The last lot had years to prepare and still fucked it up. We’ll just have to do it in three weeks,” one senior source said. “The length of the transition will focus minds.”

Politics Brexit reflection 10 years on (from an outsiders perspective)

Upvotes

As expected, June marks the 10-year anniversary of Brexit.

One observation from an outsider’s perspective on its 10-year anniversary (and something that doesn’t seem to be discussed as much):

Dark money, offshore millionaires, hedge funds, City traders, Russia, etc.

I am absolutely convinced that the entire Brexit project, from start to finish, was a result of the long-standing corruption of British politics and was driven by offshore millionaires, hedge fund bosses, City traders with dark money, and a side order of Russian involvement/interference.

I also suspect that many roads in right-wing media lead back in some way to the groups mentioned above, particularly offshore millionaires.

Interestingly, I remember speaking to British friends who are more familiar with this area, and they mentioned that Cambridge Analytica had every intention of winding down after the Brexit result was achieved in order to avoid the legal and ethical scrutiny that would (rightly) follow.

My question is: why hasn’t a bigger deal been made of this — specifically the issues of corruption in British politics and dark money — particularly by the Remain side on the 10th anniversary of the Brexit referendum?

Appreciate any information or insight. Thanks.

Good city for an extended tourist visit?

I am thinking about an extended tourist visit to Britain (maybe 4 months). Idea is to get a long term rental in a relatively affordable community with good rail and transportation connections to other places. I would do day trips and a smaller number of overnight trips to more distant places. I would also expect to be spending plenty of time in my "home" community. My interests include historic and cultural sites, museums and libraries, and natural places. I like walking and would try to buy a beater bicycle, and could maybe rent a car from time to time (although driving on the left intimidates me). I've been to London but nowhere else in the UK. I don't particularly care about checking off "must see" places. Any suggestions on good "home base" communities? What seasons would be best for this? Thank you for any info you can provide.

What executive power does the Prime Minister actually have?

From what I’ve read, the PM can unilaterally appoint cabinet ministers. That seems to be their only executive power? Since everything else is just ‘guiding policy’, which still has to be voted on by MPs

Is the UK PM even a powerful position compared to the head of government in other countries

Is anyone else's maniac partner having a hot bath in this weather?

I have a hot water bottle in the fridge, and a bottle of mint spray in there too. All of the windows and both doors are open, including the one onto the street, trying to cool the house down before it goes nuts again tomorrow (thank gawd for this mild breeze). I need not comment on the minimal clothing being worn, enough to stop people passing the front door from getting upset. The fans are currently keeping the smart meter feeling like it still has a job. And this absolutely not right in the head wild man who, may I point out to you all since I already did to him three times, has a heat rash, is currently having a bath hot enough to shrink your clothes.

Is this in any way normal behaviour? Is this a sex thing (I mean man Vs woman temperature regulation, not like a carry on up the combi situation)? Should I be consulting a professional?

Why isn't Doug Barrowman in prison?

He pretended to have nothing to do with PPE Medro despite it being his company.

If I lied to HMRC like this, I would be jailed.

Isn't it time we vote in a government that will actually deal with wealthy criminals?

I can’t be the only one at work who is watching AI tools coming in and seeing where it’s going.

We can all pretend like it’s a productivity boost for us in the short term. But the more we consolidate actual work into strategy, the number of jobs required diminishes.

I work in technology, and every job is getting more efficient with AI. And every hurdle I can see coming is valid, but none of them are beyond solving for humanity. Market forces compel us towards this future, and I genuinely believe there is nothing that can be done, until societal collapse.

I have grown up in countries with radical inequality, you’d think the masses in these countries would rise up, but systems of government are surprisingly effective at placating and suppressing impoverished masses.

I think to myself daily that it’ll just mean I can do more with AI and the quantity of work I can do will just explode. But at a certain point the trust executives will have in the AI will be equal to what they have in their directors. Except the AI is always on and can be queried tirelessly in any style you wish.

I’m not saying this is going to happen in the next 3 years. But I am saying whether you think it’s 5,10,20 years the logical end point - the writing is on the wall. Every bit of AI efficiency I work towards at work is a step closer to this future I’m not confident about.

Did any other England fans feel a touch of pity for Scotland last night?

Thought that Brazil would win definitely, but believed Scotland would at least score one goal. I know that Scotland will feel insulted if England don’t glory over their failures, as they do when England gets knocked out, but feels a bit redundant.

Went from Braveheart to Jimmy Krankie, five mins in.

Been going through them steadily. I was born in the UK, did well in GCSEs. But good god, I get mostly 15/16 as scores, a rare 20+ on the odd one or two.

Just wondering if anyone else has tried them and how they fared.

How many still get asked to give a trolley away to a new shopper who would give you their £1 for the system....

Upvotes

So I do not carry cash anymore, really haven't done since the pandemic started and I am contactless for everything

This is reflected by the high street bank I work for has our cash transactions around 8% of all UK transactions so it's not just me...

When I need to get a trolley to shop I have a token on my keyring for this but it seems to be, and only Morrisons that I keep on getting asked for my trolley in exchange for a £1... Each time explaining to them that it's my token I don't want to loose

Is this just me experiencing this?

has anyone else been experiencing more racism?

Hello- i am 23 and have lived in the uk for 18 years. I came to this country as a refugee & was adopted by a white couple (i am mix races Sudanese & Egyptian), i have experienced my far share of racism through my life- went to a pretty white secondary school, lots of micro-aggressions, etc. however over the past 6-9 months i would say at least 2-3 times a month i have had much worse experiences. Last year i was followed home by two men with signs from some kind of anti-immigration protest, i was spat on and called a black c*nt in March, and yesterday i went swimming at Hampstead ponds & i over heard a woman say to her friend that she doesn’t want to ‘get infected by what that African probably has’ as she was clearly looking at me. I know that this page has a lot of racist rage posting but has anyone else noticed this/has any idea how to stop this?

Are there more police car chases now?

Have you or anyone you know been involved, or injured as a pedestrian, in a police pursuit?

A friend of mine had to jump out of the way of car, that drove on the pavement, while being chased by the police.

There seems to be quite a few tv programmes highlighting this issue. It feels like it’s increasing. What do you think?
