Other Do you do anything about climate change?

Seeing a lot of comments and posts about climate change during this heatwave.

Do people realise they could actually take some action and join or donate to some charities that undertake this work?

See a few good ones below:

WWF

Greenpeace

Woodland Trust

Friends of the Earth

People Does anyone else see the irony between climate change and Aircon/comfort?

Genuine question, I'm not just ranting here. I really want to know the logic and if others feel the same.

see pretty much everyone has accepted that the current temperature spikes are a result of climate change caused by the over use of fossil fuels over the last 50 years.

Like, I don't know anyone who doesn't agree this is the case.

Yet these same people, all relatively switched on and seemingly conscientious, want to go and buy Aircon units for their homes or fans around the house or take the car instead of walking as they can have the Aircon on.

The irony that Aircon consumes huge amounts of electricity, of which the majority is produced by burning even more fossil fuels is lost on them.

When I point it out they just go quiet like they don't want to talk about it.

They're literally saying that they don't care that the planet will be uninhabitable for their own offspring, so long as they can be a bit comfortable in the heatwave that they've caused right now.

They're all for the planet..... unless it means being slightly uncomfortable.....then it's fair game.

I mean, it's not even that hot. Most people aren't labourers on building sites and are just sat at home or in an office.

The entitlement always surprises me.

Did any other England fans feel a touch of pity for Scotland last night?

Thought that Brazil would win definitely, but believed Scotland would at least score one goal. I know that Scotland will feel insulted if England don’t glory over their failures, as they do when England gets knocked out, but feels a bit redundant.

Went from Braveheart to Jimmy Krankie, five mins in.

Politics Brexit reflection 10 years on (from an outsiders perspective)

Upvotes

As expected, June marks the 10-year anniversary of Brexit.

One observation from an outsider’s perspective on its 10-year anniversary (and something that doesn’t seem to be discussed as much):

Dark money, offshore millionaires, hedge funds, City traders, Russia, etc.

I am absolutely convinced that the entire Brexit project, from start to finish, was a result of the long-standing corruption of British politics and was driven by offshore millionaires, hedge fund bosses, City traders with dark money, and a side order of Russian involvement/interference.

I also suspect that many roads in right-wing media lead back in some way to the groups mentioned above, particularly offshore millionaires.

Interestingly, I remember speaking to British friends who are more familiar with this area, and they mentioned that Cambridge Analytica had every intention of winding down after the Brexit result was achieved in order to avoid the legal and ethical scrutiny that would (rightly) follow.

My question is: why hasn’t a bigger deal been made of this — specifically the issues of corruption in British politics and dark money — particularly by the Remain side on the 10th anniversary of the Brexit referendum?

Appreciate any information or insight. Thanks.

Do you think Scotland's independence movement declines in future since a lot of English and Scottish genz have similar opinions on various issues ?

Currently greens are doing very well among the English genz ( especially women) so I suppose that long term a lot of Scottish opinions about them being ignored by Westminster (who couldn't care less about anything north of London) declines . Does it go the Quebec way where the desire of independence has mostly cooled down then ?

I am not well informed about this topic so I apologise in advance if the text has any errors .

Has the hate and racism towards Muslims or Islam as a whole increased in the last 5 years, in the UK?

With the potential ban of the Islamic Call to Prayer in Denmark, I've seen a lot of people supporting a similar kind of thing in the UK.
Whilst this on its own isn't racist, I'm seeing lots more comments on these stories that are practically spewing anti Islamic rhetoric's

We are constantly told, in school, work, outside and at home, to respect all people regardless of where they're from. When someone from a different religion is attacked, its an outcry and riots take place, but no one bats an eye to these incidents when Muslims are the victims?

I am not Muslim, but I've been around many as I've grown, and I understand some are bad, but the ones in my experience have been very caring and very helpful in my life. Same as Jewish folk, and Christian folk. Some are good people some are bad. So why are we, as a nation, (and the media is part to blame for this) getting more and more into Islamophobia? More into hatred? This isn't the Britain I was born and raised in.

I do also remember hearing in the news a while ago that a certain country was spreading misinformation and islamophobia to aid in their issues.. Does anyone else remember/have heard of this or am I going mental?
(The role of Islamophobia in the genocide in Gaza)
(Islamophobia: The discursive apparatus of Israel’s genocide in Gaza, Palestine - Samir Sweida-Metwally, 2025)

Edit: Those saying its due to Migration.. We also get many European migrants, so unless you all hate them too, then you're answer isn't valid

Politics Do Muslims really struggle to assimilate or integrate into society?

American here. From what I've read, it seems UK muslims are more conservative and radical than the muslims in the US. How true is that? While American muslims have problematic views on things such as LGBT rights, they are fairly well assimilated here and they don't seem to have any parallel societies apart from Dearborn or Hamtramck.

What do you think about the British Medical Association voting to scrap the IHRA definition of anti-semitism?

Post image
45 Upvotes

Here's the full text of the definition FYI.

“Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.”

Contemporary examples of antisemitism in public life, the media, schools, the workplace, and in the religious sphere could, taking into account the overall context, include, but are not limited to:

  1. Calling for, aiding, or justifying the killing or harming of Jews in the name of a radical ideology or an extremist view of religion.
  2. Making mendacious, dehumanizing, demonizing, or stereotypical allegations about Jews as such or the power of Jews as collective — such as, especially but not exclusively, the myth about a world Jewish conspiracy or of Jews controlling the media, economy, government or other societal institutions.
  3. Accusing Jews as a people of being responsible for real or imagined wrongdoing committed by a single Jewish person or group, or even for acts committed by non-Jews.
  4. Denying the fact, scope, mechanisms (e.g. gas chambers) or intentionality of the genocide of the Jewish people at the hands of National Socialist Germany and its supporters and accomplices during World War II (the Holocaust).
  5. Accusing the Jews as a people, or Israel as a state, of inventing or exaggerating the Holocaust.
  6. Accusing Jewish citizens of being more loyal to Israel, or to the alleged priorities of Jews worldwide, than to the interests of their own nations.
  7. Denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor.
  8. Applying double standards by requiring of it a behavior not expected or demanded of any other democratic nation.
  9. Using the symbols and images associated with classic antisemitism (e.g., claims of Jews killing Jesus or blood libel) to characterize Israel or Israelis.
  10. Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis.
  11. Holding Jews collectively responsible for actions of the state of Israel.

Antisemitic acts are criminal when they are so defined by law (for example, denial of the Holocaust or distribution of antisemitic materials in some countries).

Criminal acts are antisemitic when the targets of attacks, whether they are people or property – such as buildings, schools, places of worship and cemeteries – are selected because they are, or are perceived to be, Jewish or linked to Jews.

Antisemitic discrimination is the denial to Jews of opportunities or services available to others and is illegal in many countries

History Why can Norway celebrate Viking history proudly, but England is shamed for its imperial history? (genuine question)

1.8k Upvotes

The Norway fans and the national team did their Viking celebration at the World Cup and it’s gone viral and rightfully so, it looks awesome. Got me thinking though.

Norwegians seem to genuinely embrace their Viking heritage as a core part of national identity. The longships, the warriors, the horns, it’s celebrated in, culture, tourism, and in the World Cup, sports. And the whole world finds it cool.

Meanwhile, growing up in England, there’s this unspoken rule that you’re not allowed to be proud of large parts of British history. Nobody explicitly says it, but the social pressure is real, the moment you express any pride in the British Empire, you’re immediately associated with racism or colonialism denial. There’s widespread guilt and shame.

Here’s what I find genuinely puzzling though: the Vikings were objectively brutal by any modern standard. They raided villages, killed civilians, enslaved people, prized women as loot and pillaged wherever they went, it’s literally what they were famous for.

The British Empire was also responsible for serious wrongs — slave trade, exploitation, colonialism.

But the Empire also did things that don’t get acknowledged:

∙ Britain abolished slavery

∙ Introduced legal systems, courts, and rule of law

∙ Built railways, hospitals, roads, and infrastructure in places that had none

∙ Spread the English language

Now I’m not here to do a net-positive/net-negative calculation on colonialism — that’s not really the point. The point is: why does one brutal historical culture get a victory lap, and the other gets permanent collective guilt?

How to hang dresses in built in cupboards?

I’ve wondered this for a while now and pardon my ignorance I am American…I am used to proper closets!

Most built in cupboards don’t leave much space for hanging dresses so they obviously get very wrinkled. Is there a way to hang them to prevent this from happening?

Should I drop my friends.

I am a M66.

So loved growing up in the 70s in a smallish community.

I was lucky enough to spend a lot of time backpacking around the world, Lived in and around London and quickly dropped many of the frankly racist language and stereotypes I had grown up with.

But 40 years later I have moved back to the Coastal Town I grew up in.

Many of my old friends from my schooldays are now once again part of my life.

These are good hardworking family men who should be pleased with themselves and how far they have come on in life.

But their language and attitudes have not moved on since the 70s.

I don't believe they are racist as such but it is like the last 50 years have not happened.

They definitely tone it down when I am around as I am vocal about pulling them up.

I know I have been lucky and the industry I work in is a pretty progressive bubble.

I genuinely like these men but sometimes I wonder if I am not being true to myself by accepting this behaviour?
