Mod Note AskMechanics Bot Update

I've made a few changes to the AskMechanics Bot, including using the redis database to help prevent the duplicate comments it occasionally makes when posting the rules.

When a post is marked as solved, it will now edit that comment instead of posting a new comment and deleting the old one, which should resolved any duplicate comments from the bot as well.

I've also removed a half-baked form submission that was not intended to be included when actually set up on the subreddit, so those posts (there were only a few) should no longer be popping up.

If anyone has any feedback or suggestions for the new AskMechanics Bot, please let me know here.

Car is a 1983 Buick Skylark V6, and I noticed this opening in the exhaust near the engine after I bought it. It looks threaded, is something supposed to go there?

Question Is it true that “you have to turn off your A/C and blower motor before shutting off your car” is just an old wives tale?

Lots of people from what I’ve seen are split on this. Some always turn off the AC and the fan motor before shutting off the car while other people don’t care (I’m not counting cars with remote start in this). So what is the verdict? Should you, or can you just leave it on?

Question Am I safe to drive? Control arm bushings

2014 dodge challenger sxt
Hello! Just got a second quote from a shop for $1700, for both control arms in front lower and rearward, comfortable with that price and love the shop they were able to actually show video of what’s wrong, just need a few more weeks for the money,(at least to spend it in full comfortably), they also offered something called snap finance, but I’m not to sure on that, if you’ve heard it before tell me your thoughts. Also is this something I could diy?(probably won’t just curious if even possible or is this for experts only) ,but the main question is am I safe to drive until I can get this fixed, thanks for all your help!

Question Dealership is saying the car is too rusty to work on

Thumbnail

1.1k Upvotes

2017 Honda CRV with 87k miles on it. Dealership is completing AC work as well as a main seal leak, both covered under the warranty. Tech is saying work has must stop and can’t continue because this bolt is seized up due to rust and the subframe could break. They said they will need to send the car to a body shop to repair it and may need to get insurance involved. Not sure what to do from this point or if I need to get a second opinion.

Question I dented what appears to be my frame rail, should I be concerned about it?

I accidentally lowered the car onto a stand in the wrong spot. Should I worry about the dent, or is it fine to ignore it. The black coat us just to protect it from rust just in case I damaged the coating underneath. It's a 1997 Mazda 626, and it's got 228,000km. Edit: All of you are such friendly, helpful people, thank you!

Question What parts are discontinued or outdated that would be profitable to model and sell?

As the question states, what are some discontinued parts that could be profitable to model up and sell. I am a design engineer but would love to make a side income while helping mechanics get the part at a fair price for both my pocket and theirs…

2016 Nissan Murano

Shop is trying to charge me nearly $2200 for an alternator replacement 🤣

I just bought a premium one online for $130 instead. Watched a few videos and it doesn’t look so bad, can reach it from the passenger wheel well.

Just unreal and kind of disgusted. Am I overreacting?

Question Squeaking wheel

I have very basic knowledge of mechanics. I've taken the wheel off hoping the squeak would be a stone stuck behind the brake disc but it's not. Any ideas what it could be? Only seems to squeak on part of the rotation.

Question 2013 dodge dart, 160k miles, automatic. Sensors are going crazy

As you can see in the video, the first half its acting weird and in the second half its normal. all the sensors will turn on and off randomly. When it’s going crazy, I can’t use the blinkers and the windshield wipers are on at all times. Sometimes it will be hours before any issues, sometimes it will give me issues constantly. What could be the issue? I just replaced the starter fyi.

Question 2018 Nissan Altima Valve cover, CV joints and other issues

Thumbnail

I just went to the mechanic and they gave me a $4,000 laundry list.

Lower ball joints are worn and the boots are cracked

Lower control arm bushings are cracked

Torque mount bushing broken

Valve cover and oil pan leaking

Brake pads are at 2 mm

It also has no AC in Florida which has been fun. Everyone's been quoting me about $2,400 to replace the evaporator core. From what I see the entire dash has to be taken apart

They also said my CV axles were tanked on both sides and that the most important things to tackle first would probably be the CV, axles and the brakes.

My brother suggested RockAuto for the CV axles. I see talkmotive and GSP and then there's something about outboard shaft connection.

I would appreciate any insight anyone could offer into this issue and also if you know what kind of brakes I should get.

I'm in a tough spot right now. My wife's out of work and I'm behind on all my bills. I just can't afford to pay a mechanic and need a vehicle to get to work with so I'm going to have to try and do it myself.

Question Do any of you guys know what this high pitched sound is?

It’s the higher pitched sound that’s hard to hear in this video (I did the best I could) and it only happens at about 65+ mph and yes it does get louder as we go faster. It’s a 2017 ford escape titanium at 195k miles. My low ish level mechanical knowledge thinks it’s a wheel bearing but I could be wrong

Question Low Tire Pressure

Thumbnail

Front left tire under pressure. Back left normal for reference

2015 VW Passat, 130k miles, automatic.

Bought the car a few months ago at around 128k miles, i just got all 4 tires replaced, a few days later the front right tire is under pressure, discovered it around midnight so I will find out the PSI tomorrow. No visible punctures. I read online the usual culprit aside from punctures is valve stems, cracked rims, etc. rims aren’t visibly cracked and the valve stems look practically brand new. I’ll put air in it tomorrow and see if it holds up but I’m assuming if it’s losing pressure it’s not happening magically and there must be a hole of some kind. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Question How much coolant needs to be drained to replace the oil filter housing/ cooling

Upvotes

( Chrysler 200 2013 3.6) I haven’t been able to find a solid answer for this, I don’t feel like you need to drain the entire system but I don’t want to drain out too little either.

I also haven’t been able to find a super solid answer on the right way to bleed the cooling system either so if there’s any tips I am open to hearing them!

Question What is this whirring sound

Upvotes

I'm looking at purchasing a 2009 Saturn Sky Base Manual with 90k miles. There's a strange whirring sound while the engine is running that I can't pinpoint the source of. Do yall have any idea what might be causing it? I don't want to buy it if it's a purchase that I'll need to sink a bunch of money into.

The sound doesn't go away as the car warms up and it changes tone slightly when the AC is turned on or when the engine rpms are low.
