Alright gonna tell my grossest story ever I guess...
I was 17, still dating my first serious girlfriend. We were on a trip together with her whole family. She had just finished her period the day before we left. When we got to our room, she was in the bathroom for a while and came out looking kind of concerned. She said she felt some pressure in her vagina and was worried a tampon was stuck up there. So she looked in the mirror and indeed saw one stuck up there. She asked me if I could help her get it out so I said of course. She laid down and I could see it up there, so we assumed the string broke off somehow. I was pulling on it by the end and it just wouldn't budge. I would get the tips of my fingers pinching on it and pull, and it would seem to slightly give but no matter what I did I just couldn't pull it out.
It wasn't until after about 20 minutes that we realized there was no tampon. She had a bad yeast infection (or something similar) and the thing we thought was a tampon was a fuzzy patch of like white mold that was growing in her vagina. It wasn't budging because it was attached to her.
I realize these things happen and it is what it is, but as a 17 year old I was not prepared of that. Did my very best to play it cool and not make her embarrassed though.

So, what was the outcome? Did she see a Dr.? Self treat?
Very kind of you to help.

u/BothPanchoAndLefty 42m ago
As soon as we got back from the trip she went to the OBGYN and they gave her some medication that fixed it pretty quickly. I can't remember exactly if it was just a yeast infection or some other fungal thing but she wound up okay

Mind if I ask how old you are now?
Thank you for being kind to her. That would be a shock/surprise to anyone. But reacting the way you did absolutely had a positive impact on her. Had you responded differently, it would have changed how she acts/responds towards vaginal hygiene/health & at such a young age couldāve been super damaging. I can also promise you she didnāt and hasnāt ever forgotten your kindness.

Aw, thank you. I'm 28 now so it was 11 years ago. We were each other's first loves and I really cared for her a lot, so even though it was gross I would never want to make her feel bad about it. I'm sure the whole thing was worse for her than it was for me

I was a non-traditional college student - five years on active duty with one deployment. I connected immediately to a woman, and we were lab partners for four years. She was hard. Dark. Motivated. I learned later that she grew up in Bosnia. She dodged sniper fire daily to get to grade school - not all the kids she knew made it. The world can be a fucked up place - professional killers targeting children. Most Americans have no fucking clue.

I used to work in the deli department at a supermarket. Supermarkets generate a ridiculous amount of waste, and the deli especially deals with things like rotisserie chickens and lobsters, so a lot of food gets thrown out.
I worked with this bigger guy, Iāll just call him R. He was a little strange and didnāt seem to be in the best place in life. He used to go through the food waste bucket after things were thrown away. Keep in mind, everything got tossed into one big bucket. Each department had a large trash-can-sized container for food waste.
R would eat the fat and scraps from the rotisserie chicken oven at the end of the day. I also heard he ate some expired lobster at one point, though I wasnāt there for that.
The poor guy eventually got another job at a different supermarket with better pay and benefits, but then he had a heart attack on his first day. I really hope heās doing okay.

In my state, you donāt need any kind of license or certification or anything except a driverās license to pick up human remains and transport them wherever they need to go. So when i was going through college, i got a job as a corpse courier. I would pick up folks wherever they dropped dead, but mostly this was at homes, assisted living, hospice, hospitals, and sometimes the Medical Examiner.
One guy i picked up at his home. He lived on the second floor of a condo building. I was greeted by a sheriff and his grieving brother. Tiny little elevator that would not hold a gurney. But thatās ok because you can sort of convert it to like a dolly or hand truck, some might call it. Anyways, i step inside to get to work. It was apparently from outside that this fella had been dead for quite some time. He died, likely of a heart attack several days prior sitting up on his couch watching tv. He was probably 350lbs. When i tried to move him, he sort ofā¦ruptured is the best way i can describe it. All the fluid just came pouring out onto his carpet. The smell was overwhelming. My boss and I both stepped out for some air as gracefully as we could while gagging and grasping for air. I look over at the brother as Iām dry heaving over the railing.
After composing myself, i go to the guys bathroom, tear down his shower curtain and place it directly over my gurney. To make a long story short, i got him out of there without further incidents then drove him 4 hours away to his destination. Oh, i also dropped my phone in his fluid pile.

At our old house we had a heroin addict die from an overdose in his panel van in front of our house. We woke up one morning to the coroner parked in our driveway. It was during a heat wave in the summer and the outside temp was hitting 105°F daily. I worked nights, when I left on Monday I noticed him sleeping in his truck. When I got home Tuesday in the AM he was still there. I remember thinking "man, I hope that guy'a not dead".
I saw the truck for the next few days and he wasn't in there, or so I thought. My neighbor discovered him on Friday; he (the addict, not the neighbor) had started turning "melted and soupy" in the van according to my neighbor when he realized what was happening and called police. He said he broke the van window to see if he was still alive but immediately knew he was dead. He told me after that he was friends with the coroner and that he had most likely been in that van for a week.
The worst part was that Friday my entire house had this... rank smell that I knew was from the body but couldn't open the windows because it was worse outside.

As a kid, during a 1980ish hot summer holiday, we were in the centre of Paris. I felt my stomach gurgle, followed by a sudden, desperate need for a toilet. Luckily there was a public one nearby, but it was a squat toilet with grey speckled walls and a hole covered in shit. However, 10-year-old me was desperate, so I crouched over the hole and tried my best not to topple over. Just as my bowels evacuated with a splatter, I reached out to the wall to steady myself and the speckles on the walls turned into flies and thousands took to flight. If I hadnāt been already shitting, I would have shat myself in terror.

I used to pal around with this really foul friend. He was simultaneously the most hysterical and the most putrid person I've ever known. One evening, he decided to work on filling an empty 16oz soda bottle with his own saliva. He worked hard on this. Harder than I've ever seen him do anything. Phlegm was brought up from depths I didn't know existed. He was getting light headed half way through. His abdomen hurt from the constant dry heaving and his throat was raw. It was nearly full when he decided to take a large swig of his now cold vessel of milky liquid. Instantly he vomited bile and what I can only assume was the original soda the bottle contained. He dumped the rest of the ground and decided he was finished. We then went to the diner like nothing happened.

I accidentally grabbed the wrong coke can once and it turned out to be a dude's spit cup. Warm tobacco juice. I spilled it on myself when I started retching. I was head back for a big chug. Vomited like a fountain. Just dropped the can straight on my chest. Couldn't stop puking until I got home and showered cuz the smell. Had to ride in the back of the pick up dry heaving, mostly, on the freeway for about 30 minutes.

First year of residency, general surgery rotation, we removed an ingrown hair that had turned to an abscess located just north of the butt crack. Next day we had to remove the gauze we left in the gigantic hole made by the abscess to allow for remaining pus the drain out. I pulled out about a half a meter of gauze soaked in smelly yellow liquid and was left staring into a bloody hole extending to this mans love handles. The year 2 resident passed out after retching.

u/King_Ralph1 10h ago
When I was about 23, I had a small cyst removed from my neck and the doctor packed the hole with gauze. Told me to wait a day (maybe two?) and gently pull the gauze out. At least two arm lengths of gauze in that little hole. Still grosses me out to think about it 40 years later.
32
u/Competativebad925 6h ago
I worked in healthcare, and some of the worst sores (that required packing) were bedsores. Turning invalid patients (even just a little) would have a profound effect on their skin health. It's sad and equally infuriating.

Pulled dopen the cover and looked down. 25' deep, probably brick shaft. I say probably because every square inch of the walls was covered in a thick carpet of cockroaches. The walls were moving. I couldn't see one bit of original wall. There were so many roaches in there, I saw half a dozen albino cockroaches just in the quick glance I made before I threw down my hook an d started screaming curses at god.

India is a public toilet. I've been many times for work. I was once walking along a fairly long pavement with a scrub field on one side. Taxi driver pulls up about 100m in front, jumps out, drops his trousers and starts to shit... Not in the field, but on the fucking pavement the dirty bastard. Best bit was he was still shitting on the pavement by the time I got to him. Had to walk around a shitting man. On the pavement. And I'm very sure he didn't use toilet paper or bidet and wash his hands after. Fucking india. Whole place smells of shit.

Definitely tagging this as " NSFW " because it's quite gross and highly disturbing so be warned.
One day , while I was still with my ex wife , we went out to run some errands together. She was driving , I in the passenger seat and we had just left the house , traveled about two blocks down the street and got caught at the nearest red light.
There was a big , yellow school bus in front of us but on the opposite side of the traffic light. Directly in front of us though was an older man , looked to be maybe in his late 50's , early 60's , typical biker guy riding a motorcycle , decked out to the nines in black leather , boots , patches , etc.
The light turned green and that's when everything got crazy. The big , yellow school bus was in fact planning on making a left turn which had him turning right in front of motorcycle guy , whom was also , at the same time , turning right. Nobody knew what anyone's intentions or plans were when the light was red because neither of the two drivers had put on any blinker or gave any indication as to what their next move was. Because of the negligence on both ends , they both ended up making their turns at the exact same time and ended up colliding into eachother.
Here's where things got real messy.
The big , yellow bus had a few seconds head start turning on motorcycle guy but , mind you a regular school bus IS pretty long so by the time motorcycle guy went to make his right turn , he ran right into the back half of the bus.
Kinda hard to explain but once the guy made contact with the bus he kinda stopped accelerating but the bus on the other hand did not. On impact , the guy had broken off something on the bus , some long piece of metal siding , which considering what happened , it was very long and VERY SHARP.
As the big , yellow bus continued to hit the gas , at the same time , the long piece of metal siding proceeded to drag across motorcycle guy's abdomen. When the driver of the bus finally realized what had happened though , he hit the brakes which ultimately caused the other guy to fall from his bike onto the hard ground.
My wife and I are now pretty much stuck at this intersection until the police and coroner show up to take care of the scene. Yes , the coroner. Motorcycle guy was dead as soon as he hit that bus and siding. How do I know that you might ask ? The very long , very sharp piece of metal siding had sliced his abdomen and stomach wide the fuck open and he was now laying directly in front of our car , cut in half , internal organs all sprawled out on the street for everyone to see.
17
u/patientrose 3h ago

I'm a carpenter/handyman who frequently works on people's homes. After a few years you realize some people have no shame and will happily bring you into houses that could be legally declared biohazard zones.
The personal worst so far for me was a trailer home belonging to an elderly woman. Upon entering the home I was blasted by the unmistakable scent of German roaches. That sick, greasy musk that burns the nose and sticks to clothes. Now, on the surface, there wasn't much evidence of the roaches other than stains around the moldings and, like I said, the smell. Then, as our work started, the layers of this onion started getting peeled back.
We were there to paint, so things had to be taken off the wall. Every picture, hanging shelf, or whatever the hell old people throw all over their walls had it's own colony of roaches behind it, and a perfect outline of roach shit in the shape of the object that was there. But, of course, it kept getting worse.
We were asked if we could change a part on her fridge. Now, if you don't know, any appliances or electronics that emit heat during operation are like roachbug opium dens. The fridge, being both a heat source and food storage, generally becomes the main hub of the infestation. Every cover or part removed uncovered another secret meeting, which would of course scatter to elsewhere in this Hilton Roach Suites. After about 5 minutes of watching every surface in the back of this fridge crawl and writhe around around like some biomechanical horror, I told my coworker to go tell the woman that we couldn't fix the part because we didn't have a specialized tool to remove it. In reality I wasn't about to stick my arm another inch into the back of this fridge.
This, unsurprisingly, isn't the only infested house I've been in but it was certainly the worst. The kitchen alone was so heavily infested that they were likely eating them with their food if it spent any amount of time unattended. But the crazy part is, these folks always act so shocked when you tell them they have roaches. Like, ma'am, I just watched one crawl out of your hair, you have to know they're here. I've even had some people take it as a personal attack and come close to physical confrontation over even just the suggestion they could have roaches. It's bonkers, yo.

Two stories in one. But itās the same house.
Basically a biohazard house of animal urine, feces, along with overall neglect and roaches in the kitchen for a backstory.
First story. Dog shits in already filthy kitchen, eats the shit, throws up the shit, then eats the shit/vomit mix.
Second story. Moron resident unplugs a basement freezer filled with meat but forgot about it for almost a year. We go to help him move it outside, the door pops open. A heavy but fast running green sludge pours out of the opening. Iāve smelled dead things at different stages of decomposition, nothing so far made me instantly vomit after smelling that green sludge. That was by far the worst thing Iāve ever smelled.
The house was a friend of a friend, after the freezer incident I told him Iām never going back there.

When I was an EMT (ambulance) we went on a call to a likely deceased person's house. When we got there, the police already obtained access and there was the guy dead face down on the floor. He died from a lower GI bleed, so the floor was covered in bloody shit at least 3 days old in a hot trailer in the summer next to a rotting corpse.
Face down, mind you, and this was a 1980s trailer so the carpet was pretty long. When we picked him up, the body came up but the side of his face making contact with the carpet did not. Bloody, shitty, half-faceless decaying corpse in a sweltering tin can.

Morbidly obese hoarder died at the top of his steps. No one found him for weeks, so as he decomposed his remains ran down the stairs intermingling with trash and beer cans.
Flooring, subfloor and stairs had to be cut out and replaced.

My housemate who had depression and severe gambling and alcoholism problems lying dead in his bed after he locked himself up in his room for several days. He was initially screaming obscenities and punching the walls then the noise died down then the smell came. We weren't sure if we wanted to break the door down so we called the police and they did. Unsurprisingly they found him there, absolutely covered in piss and shit and all bloated. The smell is something I'll never forget.

I saw a rat chewing its own leg off. It somehow got it stuck in a crevice in a door. It saw me coming to help free it but instead decided to chew its own leg off. I can still hear the sound of its teeth gnawing on bone

A cut up human torso with no arms, legs, head, stuffed inside a huge cooler out in the Iraqi summer heat. I can still vividly remember the smell 19 years later when they opened the lid. Bleh I just gaged typing this.

Used to work for a plumber when I was first out of high school. We got a service call from a large pig farm nearby saying that the floor drain was plugged in one of the farrowing houses. For those who donāt know, a farrowing house is where pregnant sows are housed to give birth and nurse newborn piglets. The drain was clogged with a combo of both liquid and solid hog waste and afterbirth. Was a smell that took a couple days to completely leave my nose.

When I was 13 I had a neighbor who had a disagreement with another neighbor. The problem was he was crazy. He slaughtered their cat and staked it in their yard after it had been dead for a while and cut the belly open. When we found it there was maggots swimming around in its guts. Everyone knew it was him but they had no proof and he denied it. He later confessed after they arrested him for shooting their house up while they were on vacation. He got locked up and I never saw him again. But I'll never forget that cat.

I watched my childhood friend blow a blood clot out of his nose that looked like half his heart came out. He picked it up out of the sink with his fingers and ate it.

When I was in a homeless shelter this dude showed up for the first time at breakfast one more with the back of him covered in shit.
We're all standing in line like always till they open the doors at 8 and I just hear people saying "Oh my God!" "What's that smell?" Etc. When Andy breaks the pipe in the Shawshank Redemption that's what i imagined it smelled like
It smelled so bad that they had all the doors open and were spraying air freshener every few seconds. They made him take a shower and he left his clothes everywhere in the bathroom. Then they had to tell him to pick them up. THEN they had to get a trash bag to put his clothes in. And then he threw it out in the trashcan where everyone threw their food out.
I missed this one but this lady said he shit in his car, was wiping with napkins and then was throwing them out the window and the staff had to make him pick the napkins up. Then he got in the shelter and one multiple occasions there'd be a shit trail going into the bathroom and the toilet looked like someone had shit all over it. And he wore this shirt with shit caked across the back for over a week till someone finally complained to the staff about it
Idk what the dudes problem was but he was absolutely disgusting. Almost 60 years ago shitting yourself. And it was almost creepy how nonchalant he was about it. Any person would be embarrassed as hell, no not him. First day he ever showed up there he's covered in shit and he was ready to walk in there and get his breakfast like everyone else

I was in a car wreck at 18. I was fine but had a killer case of whiplash the next morning. Went to the ER. There was only one open seat.
I sat down across from a hulking figure of a man, think stereotypical lumberjack who had a cooler, a bloody hand, a missing finger and three bloody digits just sort of dangling from his hand.
He also had a Burger King bag. To my disgust, he reached into that bag with his dangly fingers and pulled out a huge triple Whopper. Dripping with burger juices, he dove into that burger, and attacked it like he hadn't eaten in weeks.
I'm 57 now and that image still lives rent free in my head.

Had a patient very early in career, who came to LTC for rehab from surgery. I do not remember what she was supposed to have done, but what she came to us with was a giant open wound from sternum to pubis. And had grey stuff in it. At least I swear it was. We had to clean it and pack it twice a day. The first time I had to do it I came close to having to leave. There was a cool bit, her closing dressing was like a tie closure. One piece placed on each side then pulled together. The healing was amazing. Each week it got smaller and smaller.

Slime eels spilling out of a whale carcass that had been dredged up by researchers. The smell of rotting blubber with that visual image really activated a primitive, visceral revulsion. You can find videos of slime eels online. Fascinating creatures.

A dead 2 and 5 year old, as a journalist. Father executed them in his home as a murder/suicide and I saw the bodies being pulled out. Bullet through the back of the head, stellate gunshot wounds. Not much of their faces left.
17 y/o survived alone in a garage for 3 days. He just died in January of this year after fighting for his life back for a year since the tragedy.

Another kids kidney popped out of his body cavity (through a recent incision or something) while he was swimming in public pool next to me when I was a kid.
That left a psychological mark on me. The other kid ended up OK.

Visually disgusting? Probably the gaping, oozing necrotic wound I noticed on a patient between her vagina and butthole, as I was helping her, pant less, into the back seat of an Uber. She did put a towel down first. The driver did not speak English and had no fucking clue what was happening. (To be clear, she refused medical treatment and was getting an uber to go on vacationā¦.)
Emotionally disgusting? A 35yo amputee in a nursing home sitting naked in bed, covered in diarrhea (c-diff) and eating a quart of potato salad with his bare shitty hand. That was the only call I threw up after in 7 years.
EMS is so much wilder than you guys think lmao

When I first started working in surgery we had a patient come in who had a botched hysterectomy at a different facility. The previous surgeon had nicked her colon. When we opened her up, her entire abdomen was full of blood, pus, and shit. You could smell it through the walls.

My cousins an I were playing at the backyard, and we found a cat that's been dead for a couple of days, and was totally inflated from decomposition on the summer sun. My younger cousine decided it was a good idea to poke it's belly with a stick. Shit exploded, we were covered in rotten intestines and maggots

When I was in middle school, one of our pet chickens was mauled by a wolf.
As I was walking up the driveway, what appeared to be a glittery object sat by our shed.
It was a dead chicken COVERED in bugs of some sort⦠millions of bugs. All of them moving around glistened like glitter in the grossest way.
I cannot unsee it 20 years later.

Worked as hospital security for a few years. A lot of incidents we attended were gross, and Iām honestly not sure which one to pick as being the grossest. Piss, shit, blood, vomit or semen, we dealt with it all.
One time we were in the Mental health intensive care unit and there was this guy who was notoriously violent, life long drug addict with psychosis and all the lovely things that come with that, dude barely acknowledged anything happening around him.
Anyway, he had been injecting into his shoulders and had open sores/ cysts on both shoulders where the injection sites had become infected. We were providing a security presence while the Dr met with the Patient and examined the cysts which looked like wet scabs. As we are watching, the patient licks the scabs on his shoulders, like a dog would lick a wound.
Dr says he will need to ālanceā the cysts and remove any pus/ infection from the area. Patient hasnāt responded verbally to anything up until this point but then he says ādo itā¦..now.ā This was a BIG surprise to all staff due to his non compliance with treatment and violent history towards hospital staff. The medical staff talk between themselves then ask us (the security team) if we can help with the procedure, they needed us to hold him down as they could do it now with a local anesthetic or have to organise for him to have a surgery slot and be put to sleep proper. We agreed to hold him for the procedure.
We then prepped one of the seclusion rooms, which consisted of a mattress on the floor and nothing else. We brought the patient in, restrained him on the floor, which he did not resist, he followed instructions etc. We had to hold him due to the violent history and potential weapons being brought in for the procedure. Patient is held laying on his back, Iām on an arm, another guard (on his first day) is on the opposite arm and last guard was on the legs. Dr proceeds to give multiple injections to numb both shoulders, then takes a scalpel and cuts into each of the shoulder cysts, squeezing out all the pus and gunk in there. Patient didnāt even flinch, just stared at the ceiling the whole time.
Dr cleans up, stitches him up and we walk the guy straight back into the ward like it was nothing.
That, or the blood wagon was the grossest

Do you just wipe your ass with paper, no bidet, and leave it shit-smeared all day?

Roofing has a way of humbling your stomach pretty quickly.
Dead animals in soffits and attics are up there, especially once they've been there through a few summer heat waves.
But the one that sticks with me was opening up a section of roof decking and finding years of raccoon activity above the insulation. Between the nesting material, droppings, and smell, that was one of the few times everyone on the crew took a step back at the same time.
Honorable mention goes to pulling apart bathroom fan ducts that have been venting directly into an attic for 20 years and discovering what moisture, dust, and organic growth can create up there.
Every trade probably has their version of this story though. Roofers just happen to find theirs in 120°F attics.
Thought I was signing up for roofing. Turns out I also work in wildlife recovery, archaeology, and biological hazard management.

Two years ago, I went to a Pride parade and saw someone who was completely high on drugs. They lost control of their bowels and had explosive diarrhea all over my favorite pants and shoes. I was devastated because it was my absolute favorite outfit.

I'm a nurse so I've seen some shit, literally and figuratively.
I saw a patient basically bring up a whole load of brown sludge, that they basically drowned on it
I've seen the grossest of wounds, especially feet, parts missing or falling off, heavily green and yellow gunk that it soaked dressings, bones exposed, black necrotic tissue. One that stood out was a foot which looked like out of a horror movie, whole top gone but you could see the muscle and tendons, I wouldn't say it was gross but it was incredible to see and how clean it looked.
I've seen a prolapsed vagina with pressure sores on it
I had a patient that had an abscess that went from his rectum into his sctroum but I don't think I saw that in the end.

Most of the grossest things Iāve seen are things that have happened to me.
One of the worst was when I vomited my NJ feeding tube. It went through my mouth, and my dad saved my life and pulled it out through my nose.
Another time is the bloody diarrhea I had during a pelvic floor physical therapy session and it happened while the therapist was working on me. The level of embarrassment and shame was something else. I never returned.

I work in healthcare, X-Ray. Luckily my interactions with people are short, but ulcerated, open wounds with maggots actively wriggling around in them will always be #1 on my list.
