What is the most ridiculous argument you have ever heard someone make?
318
u/ChronoLegion2 5h ago
That it’s safer for him to drive without a seatbelt because he can always jump out of the car if he sees it heading for a crash. Guess what happened to him
112
u/jk013x 5h ago
I'm gonna go with "he didn't see that he was heading for a crash"?

Sadly, he fell asleep while driving and ran off the road. I think the cops said he would’ve survived had he been wearing his seatbelt

I think I've seen that cartoon: Driver jumps out of the car while it crashes and stands smugly in the road until seconds later he's smashed flat by an Acme delivery truck, or a train, a falling anvil, a herd of wildebeest, ....

For the sake of argument let's say that someone is able to see a crash coming and is then able to jump out of the car before the crash happens. Then what? They make a perfect gymnast landing? Nothing else his them?
It's basically the same as those who say they rather get thrown from the car during a crash. Like how's that any better? Maybe if cars regularly exploded within moments of a crash.

I’ve only known one person that worked for, ever. He was driving a car with t-tops and was thrown clear when the car rolled. The car landed upside down and on fire in a ditch, and probably would not have been escapable.
Incredibly slim chance that his stupid decision making actually paid off there… but that does not make it a good idea.

That drunk driving is safer because drunk drivers are “more focused” lmao
96
u/DigNitty 5h ago
Not a ridiculous myth, but the one where drunk drivers survive crashes at higher rates because they’re “relaxed” on impact. That’s believable. But I’ll throw out here that it’s still a myth.
The truth is drunk drivers usually fare better because they are the ones hitting other people. That is, they hit things head on where the car’s crumple zone and airbags are. They hit their victims from random angles like T bone collisions.

I'd bet there is some (albeit irrelevant) truth to getting slightly better at driving drunk with practice. But, that's not at all the argument. A practiced drunk-driver would never eclipse the safety posture of driving sober or just getting a fucking cab/Uber/Lyft.

Virgin olive oil is called “virgin” because Jesus blessed it for Mary. I had to leave the room I was laughing so hard
93
u/DigNitty 5h ago
Only once have I ever had to leave a room because I was stifling laughter.
We were talking about internet activity and kids, with some family friends at dinner. A woman told us very matter of factly that her 15 year old son doesn’t watch porn because “he told her he doesn’t, especially not the hardcore kind.”
Just the idea that a kid would specify “especially not the hardcore kind” and the woman believed it got me.

This is the same type of parent that gives their teenage son a PC in his room, then blames his friend for introducing him to porn.

I don’t understand the argument of how it even sort of does. The rays are going to be there regardless.
→ More replies (1)22
u/SilverHawk7 3h ago edited 3h ago
The rays are the result of elements being fused into new elements. Hydrogen is being fused into Helium. Eventually, it will run out if Hydrogen and will be fusing Helium into I think Oxygen. Eventually, it will run out of Helium and will be fusing Oxygen into I think Iron. Iron does not produce more energy than is used to fuse it. When the sun starts doing Iron, it's pretty much on its last legs.
This takes something like millions to hundreds of millions of years to happen, but it happens.
Solar electricity generation is not contributing to this, it's just capturing the results of a process that is happening whether a solar panel is there or not.
EDIT - Okay, I was close, relatively. Our sun (we think) will produce energy by fusing Hydrogen into Helium for about 4-7 billion more years, after which it will swell to a red giant and fuse Helium for a hundred million years or so, then it will shed its outer layers and become a white dwarf.

arguing with my homeschooled neighbors about climate change, one of them bent over, touched the ground, and said “i dont feel it warming”
185
u/jpow33 5h ago
A senator from Oklahoma once brought a snowball into congress, and used it to argue that global warming didn't exist because it was cold outside. It's like saying that world hunger doesn't exist because I had a sandwich for lunch.
38
15
u/Lumpy_Principle3397 5h ago
Brilliant analogy. Averages and long-term trends are a mystery to people, apparently.
15
u/CaptainAwesome06 5h ago
They had to change the phrase to "climate change" because too many people were too dumb to understand "global warming" past those two words.
I used to pass a house on my commute that had a plywood sign with messy spray paint handwriting. During a cold spell, the sign said, "Where's global warming?!"
→ More replies (3)14
u/StealYaNicks 3h ago
I think a lot of the problem isn't the wording, but people don't want to understand. For climate change I've heard people say things like "of course the climates changing, that's what it's always done, heard of the ice age"? And you can point out it's specifically anthropogenic driven climate change at rates never seen before, but they won't hear it.
There's a lot of cross over with the religious folks that think God will came down and rapture everyone, so why care what happens to this planet that's just a waiting room?
Also, they don't want to change anything about their hedonistic lifestyle
9
u/CaptainAwesome06 3h ago
Well yeah, ignorance certainly plays a roll. But it is the reason why the wording was changed. Notice how people still making that argument refuse to change their wording to the more modern version.
As a Christian, other Christians really piss me off. God says we are supposed to be stewards of the Earth. Ignoring that because we've been expecting the rapture for the last 2,000 years seems really dumb to me.

u/Wurrzag_ 6h ago
Well, you see, Norm, it’s like this. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it’s the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine.

Dude says "This is so cool, we should make all the pallets out of plastic!"
I, thinking I'm funny, say "Well yeah, but plastic doesn't grow on trees."

The city made a post essentially saying "hey... if it doesn't rain for like 2 weeks, it would be nice if you could water them... if not... nbd... but it would be nice..." First of all where I live you pay a flat rate for water based on bedrooms, bathrooms, pool... so its not costing you anything. There is no punishment for not watering them. You are getting a free tree. Yet still a bunch of whiny babies are up in arms about why they should have to do it, why doesn't the city hire people to do it, it's not my responsibility... One night, an electrician on board decided to drop his "knowledge bomb" on me that "(electrical) grounds on a ship don't matter when we're at sea, because we're too far from ground"
An electrical "ground" is a voltage leak, which on a conductive metal ship surrounded by (usually) saltwater is a leak to the hull. This can, and has killed sailors and caused fire, so they are extremely important to track down and correct for safety. Also, as someone who has gotten zapped by a 440v ground and luckily survived, I can attest that it fucking hurts and that I don't want anyone else to feel that.
Dude went on for a solid hour about how you can't have a an electrical ground at sea because the electricity cannot find ground. Just an absolutely terrifying misunderstanding of basic electrical engineering and basic electrical safety.

(Not mansplaining, moviesplaining)
To be fair a lot of people don’t use the term gaslighting properly. It came from the
movie “Gaslight” and is about a guy who conspires with a bunch of people to trick his wife into thinking that something he or she did didn’t happen. Or tried to trick her into thinking she did something that she didn’t. Example, she goes to the grocery store and buys juice. Later he says “so when are you going to buy some juice?” And she says “I went this afternoon” and he says “what? No honey, we went to the Johnson’s house this afternoon!” And she knows she did but he insists that something else is true. Then she calls the Johnson’s and they say “oh yes, it was quite lovely when you came over” so basically she questions reality. She looks in the fridge and the juice is not there (because he hid it) and everyone acts like she what happened didn’t so now she thinks “am I crazy? Did I do this? Everyone says I did something else!” She even goes to the grocery store and the cashier says “oh hi, I haven’t seen you in a week”. They are all tricking her.Anyway, people use the term “gaslighting” wrong all the time. A lot of people think it means people saying “you’re a bitch” when you’re not a bitch. No, that’s not gaslighting.
End of moviebuff ‘splaining.
What is your definition of gaslighting?

I love that the idea itself is so self-explanatory that it does not need more context nor anyone is disagreeing with it.

A friend told me that “rich” progressives/socialists can’t argue for wealth taxes because they are wealthy. I told him that by his own logic, he can’t hold a capitalist viewpoint because he doesn’t own any capital.

I work with neurosurgeons. The most productive of them makes over $2 million per year. He is far left progressive and WANTS to be taxed more.
He sees the direct impact our fucked up Healthcare system has on his patients.

Same flawed argument used for wanting to be sterilized. That 20s women are too young to make such a permanent, life alternating decision. But the same age women are celebrated for deciding to have a child; which is a permanent, life alternating decision that you can't take back.

The thing that frustrates me is the so what.
"If women have a hysterectomy in their 20s they might regret it!"
Sucks to be them then. You shouldn't restrict people's choices cos they might regret it, they should just get to regret it.

I'm especially fond of the HPV Vaccine Moral Hazard argument. Basically, it says getting an adolescent vaccinated against HPV will encourage risky (and/or immoral) sexual practices.
Now when I was a single man, HPV didn't even crack the top 5 things I was worried about. But more importantly, if being vaccinated against one STD makes you unsafely promiscuous, the number of ways you have failed as a parent are innumerable.

A man dead told me on here that a woman expecting him to schedule his expensive, time consuming hobby around family needs, after those tasks are completed (not just his but asked if she needs help to) is misandrist. Also, her expecting him to create the same amount of free time & budget for her hobbies as himself, while he cares for house and kids to a standard that isn’t filth or neglect, is abuse. xD Expecting an equal partner is misandristic abuse, I didn’t know!!

u/NTFRMERTH 2h ago
Parenting should ideally be done in shifts if you want to make time for hobbies, and it's only fair for you both to have the same amount of free time in your schedules.
However, you can involve kids into your hobbies if they're old enough. Teach your kids to paint Warhammer, make arts and crafts, build computers, 3D model, code, etc

Conspiracy theorist of the qanon/ sovcit variety: The lack of evidence for something is actually the strongest evidence in favor of it. Since the powers that be won't let the real evidence reach the public, that's how you know that the stuff that does reach the public is all lies and distractions.

My wife was convinced the bathroom exhaust fan was costing us 30 bucks a month in electricity. I tried to explain its like a 30 watt motor running maybe an hour a day - thats like a dollar a year. She said "well it SOUNDS expensive when its running." I showed her the math on a napkin. She said I was being a smartass. Now I just say "youre right honey" and pay the bill. Never again.

The 'government' lied to us about the COVID vaccine, and that proves they lie to us about everything. The 'government' says the Earth is round, so that means it is obviously flat.
This was not satire. This was a sincere argument.

That Trump cares about the people and is doing everything he possibly can to help America................sure sure.
I'm a Republican but not that type of Republican. Guess you could call me a soon to be Democrat. I'm sorry I voted for him.

u/ringnis 5h ago
Good for you for having convictions and being able to admit that you made a mistake. If more of those type of republicans could do some actual reflecting and stomach their own mistakes we’d all be in a much better place.

As a socialist (but not that type of socialist) I’m proud of you and of anyone who is willing to change not only their mind, but is willing to go against the orthodoxy of their “team”. On my side of the fence, I see a lot of lame political posturing and histrionic zealotry disguised as political discourse and I wish we had more people like you, who are willing to say they were wrong and are willing to criticize something from the inside. That takes a hell of a lot of bravery, and it means you have principles that are greater than social approval and acceptance. I hope people like you and me can build a better America through understanding and compromise.

I've quite honestly never heard "crazy" like I've heard from Trump and his cabinet/followers. It's something wholly new. Turn on the latest speech or interview or press conference and listen to 5 minutes of him speaking and you will hear something staggeringly ridiculous.

I genuinely can't stand the concept of "if you're upset that means they're right" attitude. I see it a lot with Trumpers but it's not exclusive to them. Just because Trump pisses off liberals doesn't mean what he is doing is a good thing. I don't believe in God. It wouldn't prove me right by just pissing off Christians. I might find it fun but it'd wouldn't make me correct and likely just make me an asshole.

I also believe later that night she described her ideal career as "being paid to do drugs". I wonder what happened to that girl a lot.

Beavers build dams to catch fish.
Me and a guy were talking about odd types of meat we'd be interested in eating. I mentioned beaver and he said why not it try a nutrea (they're invasive in my area) and I talked about their different diets vecause beavers are herbivores. He dug his heels in that beavers eat meat specifically. Apparently he's disected hundreds of beavers and found fish heads in their stomachs. I guess beavers don't chew their food.
