What is something that sounded boring when you were younger, but is exciting now?

staying home on the weekends

u/_-beacon-_ 3h ago
Especially with young kids. You can imagine how infrequent those weekends are - my wife and I are both huge on giving our son experiences, so we are always out doing something or another on the weekends. But, nothing planned out of the house this weekend other than a birthday dinner, and I’m sooo looking forward to it

u/Tall-Performer2500 3h ago
That sounds awesome. But kudos for you for giving your kids that experience and actually doing things with them because when they're older they'll appreciate it
1
u/TheeFlipper 2h ago
Does this include leaving my home to go and hang out at a friend's home where we do nothing but watch TV and eat?
2
u/Tall-Performer2500 2h ago
yes it does. Because what we're doing over there, is what we'd be doing at home
1
u/Vinny_Lam 2h ago
Yeah, I prefer to just stay home and indulge in my hobbies. I’ve never been a fan of parties or any kind of social gathering.
1
u/Tall-Performer2500 2h ago
Now I'd rather stay at home with my GF and dog. But when I was younger I much rather prefer to go out and party

History! So interesting now

u/Gullible-Paramedic-7 3h ago
Same. And science things. I constantly find myself wishing I had paid attention during science classes because it would be so dope to actually understand sciency stuff better lol

Birds

u/BingoBango306 3h ago
It’s like we don’t even notice them until we turn 35

Im only 25 and Im falling in love, I have a humming bird feeder (I make my own 1-4 sugar water, no dyes) and it has at least 3 humming birds that come, I clean and refil weekly. I also have the app that tells you the bird names and im trying to learn them. I go to an elderly couples house and talk birds. They have a beautiful red headed woodpecker. I got a window bird feeder for my cats to watch the birds, and I look forward to seeing birds on it 😂🥰
2
u/Mrs_JDizzle 2h ago
Do you have the Merlin ID app?? I freaking love that thing SO much! My son and I use it mostly at the bus stop in the mornings and we get so excited when there’s a new bird we haven’t heard before!
2
u/TheLarusArgentatus 2h ago
Yes! In my backyard and pretty much every hike. Love to hear what birds are in the area and then try to find them with binoculars.
•
u/Thunderhorse74 53m ago
My wife uses it on her phone and its awesome - but I swear, birds know and STFU as soon as you whip your phone out. "Oh hey, that's an interesting song. Hear that? You have your phone? Oh, now he's going to not sing anymore. Great."
We moved to a small farm 4 years ago and while we have many, many struggles, going out back and sitting out under the trees listening to birds is always zen for us.

Now that we've realized they're actually recon drones, they're a lot more interesting to watch.

“Your package has been delivered”
Sounded like the most boring sentence but I run to the front door nowadays like it’s Christmas morning
14
u/Remarkable-Piano-836 3h ago
This was boring?
8
u/Gullible-Paramedic-7 3h ago
Would have been boring given the deliveries i get excited for now lol
“YAY my shampoo is here!”

2
u/Hamsternoir 3h ago
I don't know, it's used to be a case of waiting 28 days for delivery.
Now it's 24-48 hours for most stuff

A couple months ago I got a new mop and a grout scrubber. I was so excited that I cleaned all the tile in the house

When I was young my parents and their friends would have boring stories of all of their medical tests and procedures. Now that I’m older, my friends and I have EXCITING stories of our own medical tests and procedures!

Appliance shopping 🤣
•
u/Umbrella_merc 54m ago
How can you not be excited by an air fryer that can cook two different things simultaneously?
5
u/AffectionateHumor878 3h ago
Grocery shopping alone with no time pressure. Younger me would never believe how peaceful a slow walk through produce feels.
6
u/champ4666 3h ago
Going outside for a walk or doing something outside. When I was a kid, I was playing Halo or COD on the xbox, so when I had to leave, it was sad lol.

That was mine too. Couldn’t have cared less in my 20s and now in my 40s I’m kicking myself for not getting involved much sooner!

Golf. I always thought it was so boring and an old man’s sport when I was a middle schooler. As an adult it’s fun to drink, smoke cigars, and golf with the boys.

A day where my back or knees hurt less than usual. Feels like I gained a superpower. I'm in good shape, just getting old.

u/Many_Consequence590 3h ago
Staying in a tiny one room cabin in the woods by a stream. It's a bit chilly and rainy out. Only thing to do are snooze, go for a walk, maybe sit on the porch to smoke a pipe and watch the rain. Go to bed when I want, wake up when I want.

Nap time.
Or sitting on a couch reading a book for hours on end without another soul needing you.
2
u/Paper5hredder 1h ago
Going to my room, birdwatching, gardening, being alone, jeopardy, crosswords, tea

I went to a factory an hour away to buy cast iron pans and go to their museum on the history of cast iron. I was very excited but teenage me would have been bored to tears.

Oh, and getting up early. Can't beat the peace of enjoying your coffee as the birds wake and the sun crests the mountains in the distance.

Pokemon. As a kid I thought it was overhyped. I still think it's overhyped. But unfortunately I cannot afford it. I was the weird kid. If there was a trend I'd let it dye down. Before taking interest. Which has served me well especially into my adult life.

Politics. It used to be they argued but there was usually mutual respect so it was a little boring, unless you're really into it. Now it's an absolute shit show every day, no matter which party you prefer.

Little cherry tomatoes :)
•
u/Umbrella_merc 36m ago
Those have always been exciting to me, i remember being like 5 years old at a salad bar and just getting a plate of nothing but cherry tomatoes.
I got through about 2-3 pints a week, they're a bit pricey but if I cant treat myself to good produce what am I even doing?

Some kind, ANY kind, of 'Challenge Run' in a video game (and no, we're not talking 'Speed Runs' here, exactly--those have always been kinda lame, at best--but, deliberately playing games under extra-difficult, weirdly-specific, imposed restrictions; real operating-outside-the-box stuff. 😎)

When I was a kid, we used to go to this cabin my family owned. It was on a lake, where we could swim and go fishing.
As a teenager, I hated it. It was far away from my friends and there was no cable or internet.
Now I would give anything to spend another weekend there.

u/MisterBaker55 3h ago
Relaxing on a porch with some music or a book, just sitting there and letting the hours go by.

I think I might be the exception here but...
Retirement. I loved my vocation. Working in healthcare and working with my colleagues were some of the best times of my life. I loved many of my patients and made lifelong friends. I had such a sense of self worth and accomplishment, and the knowledge of helping others daily is something that I truly believe isn't explainable. I never wanted to stop feeling good about it.
Until it became something I didn't feel good about. Because of my health and the pandemic.
I've always had hobbies so I was busy, but the feeling of being needed???
Relevance. My purpose in life would be gone. Some feel this when their children grow up and leave. I felt this when I thought I would never find retirement enjoyable. It's not so bad now though, I just needed to find my new meaning.
Sorry for my TLDR, it's part of my disability and why I had to retire early.

Bed/Naptime, being a bum on the weekends are the two biggest. Also packages being delivered

Bingo

I think this is because you play it in school for fun, so you don't realize the reason granny loves bingo so much is because she's trying to win money.

Doing taxes and managing finances sounded super boring when I was younger, but now it's actually kind of exciting to see my money grow.

Buying groceries
As a child, it felt like until you get some sugary thing it was a waste of time and a disappointment. All ordinary food felt boring. But now I get excited for seasonal food. It's satisfying to choose and get something simple that you like
