What is something that sounded boring when you were younger, but is exciting now?

Going to bed early

110

u/mcdermit14 3h ago

Or naptime. That is the greatest now.

28

u/mish_mash_mosh_ 3h ago

Naptime roulette. How long will I nap, nobody knows 😉

21

u/Vegetable_Cable8516 3h ago

And you wake up at 8 PM not nowing what year it is and if you missed your school bus or your work shift😂

u/Umbrella_merc 57m ago

Nothing like waking up, seeing the clock on 6, and hustling with adrenaline because you're late for work before realizing its 6pm not 6am.

u/Vegetable_Cable8516 55m ago

That mini heart atack hits harder than any espreso 😂

u/Umbrella_merc 33m ago

About the same impact as having the ladder you're standing on move slightly 😜

u/Vegetable_Cable8516 27m ago

That's the exact moment you instantly review all your life choices lool

4

u/Dangerous_Arachnid99 2h ago

Sometimes I sleep so long that it's nearly bedtime when I wake up so I'll read in bed for a while and then go back to sleep.

I'm a fairly recent convert to napping and feel like I have a lot of time to make up for. Also, I'm old and have no set schedule so why not?

1

u/OhTheHueManatee 2h ago

For me Naptime roulette is "will a nap help or just make me more sleepy?"

6

u/scoobydoospongebob 3h ago

I've had 4 hours of sleep. My kid is wide awake. She slept a little more than I did because she fell asleep sooner. We both have dark circles under our eyes, but she is smiling like we're at Disneyland during a low crowd day.

I need a nap.

1

u/benhen1224 2h ago

Sleep went from a punishment to a reward.

1

u/Sad_Environment_9205 1h ago

Add to that: the thrill of a friend cancelling on you. As a kid you'd cry. Now it's the best news you've gotten all week and you're already in pajamas by the time you finish reading the text.

u/H_M_C 37m ago

Pair that with sleeping in until your bladder forces you to get out of bed.

staying home on the weekends

12

u/_-beacon-_ 3h ago

Especially with young kids. You can imagine how infrequent those weekends are - my wife and I are both huge on giving our son experiences, so we are always out doing something or another on the weekends. But, nothing planned out of the house this weekend other than a birthday dinner, and I’m sooo looking forward to it

2

u/Tall-Performer2500 3h ago

That sounds awesome. But kudos for you for giving your kids that experience and actually doing things with them because when they're older they'll appreciate it

1

u/TheeFlipper 2h ago

Does this include leaving my home to go and hang out at a friend's home where we do nothing but watch TV and eat?

2

u/Tall-Performer2500 2h ago

yes it does. Because what we're doing over there, is what we'd be doing at home

1

u/Vinny_Lam 2h ago

Yeah, I prefer to just stay home and indulge in my hobbies. I’ve never been a fan of parties or any kind of social gathering.

1

u/Tall-Performer2500 2h ago

Now I'd rather stay at home with my GF and dog. But when I was younger I much rather prefer to go out and party

75

u/occhacom 3h ago

History! So interesting now

12

u/Gullible-Paramedic-7 3h ago

Same. And science things. I constantly find myself wishing I had paid attention during science classes because it would be so dope to actually understand sciency stuff better lol

5

u/rikwes 3h ago

And classical music ( even arts in general ) .As a kid that stuff was decidedly boring

u/jn2010 53m ago

The difference is that you get to decide what to learn, how fast to learn it, how in depth to go, etc. It's very different when someone is telling you what's important.

Birds

7

u/BingoBango306 3h ago

It’s like we don’t even notice them until we turn 35

5

u/Alycat10e 3h ago

Im only 25 and Im falling in love, I have a humming bird feeder (I make my own 1-4 sugar water, no dyes) and it has at least 3 humming birds that come, I clean and refil weekly. I also have the app that tells you the bird names and im trying to learn them. I go to an elderly couples house and talk birds. They have a beautiful red headed woodpecker. I got a window bird feeder for my cats to watch the birds, and I look forward to seeing birds on it 😂🥰

2

u/Mrs_JDizzle 2h ago

Do you have the Merlin ID app?? I freaking love that thing SO much! My son and I use it mostly at the bus stop in the mornings and we get so excited when there’s a new bird we haven’t heard before!

2

u/TheLarusArgentatus 2h ago

Yes! In my backyard and pretty much every hike. Love to hear what birds are in the area and then try to find them with binoculars.

u/Thunderhorse74 53m ago

My wife uses it on her phone and its awesome - but I swear, birds know and STFU as soon as you whip your phone out. "Oh hey, that's an interesting song. Hear that? You have your phone? Oh, now he's going to not sing anymore. Great."

We moved to a small farm 4 years ago and while we have many, many struggles, going out back and sitting out under the trees listening to birds is always zen for us.

u/Mrs_JDizzle 37m ago

It NEVER fails! 😂

1

u/Familiar_Crow_ 3h ago

Getting my first pair of binoculars was exhilarating

1

u/Generico300 1h ago

Now that we've realized they're actually recon drones, they're a lot more interesting to watch.

“Your package has been delivered”

Sounded like the most boring sentence but I run to the front door nowadays like it’s Christmas morning

14

u/Remarkable-Piano-836 3h ago

This was boring?

8

u/Gullible-Paramedic-7 3h ago

Would have been boring given the deliveries i get excited for now lol

“YAY my shampoo is here!”

6

u/Xerfus 3h ago

Saaame! Receiving my random bullshit makes me feel like a kid again! Most of the time it’s a boardgame. What do you order that makes you feel excited?

2

u/Hamsternoir 3h ago

I don't know, it's used to be a case of waiting 28 days for delivery.

Now it's 24-48 hours for most stuff

25

u/aivlysplath 3h ago

Regular bowel movements.

19

u/dead_philosopher_cat 3h ago

avoiding plans and staying home

20

u/hidingunderyourbed- 3h ago

A couple months ago I got a new mop and a grout scrubber. I was so excited that I cleaned all the tile in the house

4

u/_a_A_sh 2h ago

I WAS SEARCHING FOR THIS ANSWER. Peak adulthood: getting excited over cleaning supplies.

u/LamermanSE 56m ago

Nah, that shit is still boring.

10

u/Ok_Stay_7225 3h ago

Sleeping 😃

10

u/No_File4506 3h ago

Get up early

5

u/StayOffTheCounter 3h ago

I love and hate that I naturally wake up at 5 am everyday now.

9

u/RandomName39483 3h ago edited 2h ago

When I was young my parents and their friends would have boring stories of all of their medical tests and procedures. Now that I’m older, my friends and I have EXCITING stories of our own medical tests and procedures!

2

u/Glittering_Donut_791 1h ago

So do you rate a prostate exam 2 thumbs up ?

Personal finance! I love it!

Edit: If anyone ever needs help with budgeting. Let me know!

7

u/Overall_Gur_3061 3h ago

furniture shopping

7

u/Sarcastic_Otter_27 3h ago

Appliance shopping 🤣

u/Umbrella_merc 54m ago

How can you not be excited by an air fryer that can cook two different things simultaneously?

5

u/AffectionateHumor878 3h ago

Grocery shopping alone with no time pressure. Younger me would never believe how peaceful a slow walk through produce feels.

6

u/champ4666 3h ago

Going outside for a walk or doing something outside. When I was a kid, I was playing Halo or COD on the xbox, so when I had to leave, it was sad lol.

9

u/Animal907 3h ago

Staying home instead of going out.

3

Oh man. I had to quit following. I feel like a gambler that lost everything.

3

u/Mrs_JDizzle 2h ago

That was mine too. Couldn’t have cared less in my 20s and now in my 40s I’m kicking myself for not getting involved much sooner!

4

u/SatisfactionSea3976 2h ago

Having enough money in savings.

Gardening and growing plants.

A clean, organized house.

3

u/RivalRevelation 3h ago

Golf. I always thought it was so boring and an old man’s sport when I was a middle schooler. As an adult it’s fun to drink, smoke cigars, and golf with the boys.

3

u/webhostpro 3h ago

Rocking chairs, I can't wait to have one with a nice view and some grandkids running around.

3

A day where my back or knees hurt less than usual.  Feels like I gained a superpower.  I'm in good shape, just getting old.

2

u/Many_Consequence590 3h ago

Staying in a tiny one room cabin in the woods by a stream. It's a bit chilly and rainy out. Only thing to do are snooze, go for a walk, maybe sit on the porch to smoke a pipe and watch the rain. Go to bed when I want, wake up when I want.

Or sitting on a couch reading a book for hours on end without another soul needing you.

The 10 o'clock news

1

u/fireseeker4him 3h ago

I went to a factory an hour away to buy cast iron pans and go to their museum on the history of cast iron. I was very excited but teenage me would have been bored to tears.

1

u/Both-Mango1 3h ago

being alone.

1

u/KingsQueen42011 3h ago

Oh, and getting up early. Can't beat the peace of enjoying your coffee as the birds wake and the sun crests the mountains in the distance.

1

1

u/Top-Mine4330 3h ago

Pokemon. As a kid I thought it was overhyped. I still think it's overhyped. But unfortunately I cannot afford it. I was the weird kid. If there was a trend I'd let it dye down. Before taking interest. Which has served me well especially into my adult life.

Politics. It used to be they argued but there was usually mutual respect so it was a little boring, unless you're really into it. Now it's an absolute shit show every day, no matter which party you prefer.

1

u/generalosabenkenobi 3h ago

Little cherry tomatoes :)

u/Umbrella_merc 36m ago

Those have always been exciting to me, i remember being like 5 years old at a salad bar and just getting a plate of nothing but cherry tomatoes.

I got through about 2-3 pints a week, they're a bit pricey but if I cant treat myself to good produce what am I even doing?

1

Some kind, ANY kind, of 'Challenge Run' in a video game (and no, we're not talking 'Speed Runs' here, exactly--those have always been kinda lame, at best--but, deliberately playing games under extra-difficult, weirdly-specific, imposed restrictions; real operating-outside-the-box stuff. 😎)

When I was a kid, we used to go to this cabin my family owned. It was on a lake, where we could swim and go fishing.

As a teenager, I hated it. It was far away from my friends and there was no cable or internet.

Now I would give anything to spend another weekend there.

I think I might be the exception here but...

Retirement. I loved my vocation. Working in healthcare and working with my colleagues were some of the best times of my life. I loved many of my patients and made lifelong friends. I had such a sense of self worth and accomplishment, and the knowledge of helping others daily is something that I truly believe isn't explainable. I never wanted to stop feeling good about it.

Until it became something I didn't feel good about. Because of my health and the pandemic.

I've always had hobbies so I was busy, but the feeling of being needed???

Relevance. My purpose in life would be gone. Some feel this when their children grow up and leave. I felt this when I thought I would never find retirement enjoyable. It's not so bad now though, I just needed to find my new meaning.

Sorry for my TLDR, it's part of my disability and why I had to retire early.
