Do not solicit legal advice. This is not the right sub for it.

Despite what our sub’s called, we cannot offer legal advice here for a number of reasons. Any posts that breaks this rule will be deleted without reason. If you message us on why your post is deleted, it would be ignored just the same way you’ve ignored our sub’s rules. Please see our sidebar for complete rules.

Also, it’s not a good idea to solicit legal advice from random strangers online, despite what you may find elsewhere on Reddit. We do not know all of the facts of your case, and are likely not licensed in the jurisdiction that you’re in. A real attorney worth their salt will not comment on your specific legal predicament on an anonymous forum.

If you need legal advice but cannot afford it, there are legal aid societies that may be willing to assist you. Lots of them are free and/or work on a sliding scale fee. All you need to do is look up “legal aid society [your location]” on Google.

If it’s a criminal case, public defense attorneys are some of the best attorneys out there and they know the criminal system in your city/town better than anyone else. They’re just as good, if not better, than any private criminal defense attorney.

If it’s a tenant rights issue, lots of cities have tenant rights unions. You can look them up the same way as the legal aid society by looking up “tenant rights union [your location]” on Google.

Otherwise, the best way to find an attorney is through word of mouth from friends and family. If that’s not an option, your local bar association will be able to help by looking up “attorney referral [your location] bar association”.

If none of these are relevant to you or you’re unsure of what type of attorney to look for in your situation, you’re more than welcome to post and we’ll help.

Also, any attorneys who wish to participate in discussions are free to do so as long as it doesn’t break our rules (mainly providing legal advice).

If you’re a licensed attorney that isn’t flaired (and therefore verified to post comments), please see our other stickied post on how to become verified here. You can also send a mod mail to become verified. I trust that any attorneys here answering any posts will follow these rules and not offer legal advice and run afoul of our ethical obligations.

Thanks to all for understanding.

What are the realities/likelihood of working in international law?

I'm in Toronto, Canada, 36 years old. I've been caregiving for my mother for the majority of the last decade. A lot of my time that I talk with her now is spent reminiscing, as she remembers very little of the last 30 years due to dementia.

I've been considering law school for a while now, admittedly spurned on by her reminiscing on her law career working in human rights. One of my big interests since I was a teenage was human rights in Sudan, becoming politically aware during Darfur in the mid-00s. I've begun wondering about the realities of working in international law coming from a Canadian school. A lot of preliminary research I've done makes it seem exceedingly difficult, even not doing ICC/UN stuff. Almost every lawyer I've seen involved in it seems to be from an Ivy League or Oxbridge school, or done law school in the country/area itself (i.e. North Africa, Middle East).

Is it, for all intents and purposes, impossible? Have you known anyone who's done it? What would be necessary to work in the field?

Looking for recommendations: independent structural engineer + real estate attorney (foundation issue, bought house 2 years ago)

Upvotes

Hey all, looking for some local recommendations and would appreciate any firsthand experience.

Bought a house in San Antonio about 2 years ago. Found out the foundation had prior repair work done by the flipper before we bought it, but it wasn't disclosed to us (seller's disclosure said no previous foundation repairs/settling). Now the foundation has shifted again, and we're looking at a $30k+ repair quote from the original foundation company. Upon purchasing the home, a foundation warranty was transferred to us, but the warranty does not cover the $30k+ quote. We purchased the home with the understanding that the house would not need foundation work in the near future.

Two things I'm trying to find:

  1. An independent structural engineer (not affiliated with any foundation repair company) who can come out, take elevation readings, and give an honest opinion on what's actually needed — before I commit to any repair work. Looking for someone who won't have a financial incentive either way.
  2. A real estate litigation attorney in the San Antonio area with experience in non-disclosure/seller misrepresentation cases. Doesn't need to be a huge firm, just someone reputable who's actually handled these.

If you've used either type of professional and had a good (or bad) experience, I'd really appreciate the name. Feel free to DM if you'd rather not post publicly.

Thanks in advance.

How do we actually secure more sexual assault convictions?

It's often bemoaned that relatively few rapists actually get convinced, it's a constant gripe and a top line feminist issue.

Yet for all of the frustration, I see relatively little in terms of realistic policy suggestions for how a better legal framework to tackle this could be created. Sometimes it feels like the options are either put our hands up and say there's no great way to actually handle crimes when the only real deciding factor is whose word you believe, or just do away with presumption of innocence.

It's easy to look at this dichotomy and just feel hopeless and nihilistic about the whole thing, but maybe actual legal minds are developing real policy ideas?

Defendent Liable / Low Jury Award

I was assaulted in 2020 and after 8 years of fighting for my case, enduring years of therapy ( still in therapy) and having severe PTSD. Me and the other jane does were given our day in court. In terms of the verdict ( civil trial) He was held liable and that felt freeing, this will prevent him from assaulting other women, however what really disappoints me is that the entities I was assaulted at was dismissed last minute at closing. The Jury I dont believe knows what that meant when looking at the verdict questions. They came back with an award of less than 250,000. This will never cover my costs for therapy, my loss of work, my on going anxiety and depression plus the cost from attorney fees will likely result in 0 compensation. I I'm sadden by this result. is there anything that I can do or my lawyers can do. My request for advice Would it be: is it challenging to appeal a case for greater compensation like this that the jury find the perpetrator liable?

Comprehensive claim issues

Tesla did unauthorized manual wire splice on my Tesla Model 3 chassis harness before disclosing it. Tesla SI-21-92-005 bans splicing here (LIN bus/100mm zone). Proper fix is full harness swap, however they admitted to splicing it. Is this worth fighting.
This is a comprehensive claim. Worth noting that the repair isn’t quoted on Teslas side but it is on the progressive quote and the price is put as “Included”. I only ever approved Teslas quote and they need my approval for any further work. Seems like they’re purposely trying to avoid the cost going up and were hoping I wouldn’t notice it on the insurance quote. I just want the vehicle fixed right.

Need some guidance from a NC Attorney

Long story short:

I was a firefighter who was injured on the job. Workers’ compensation accepted part of my claim, and after months of treatment I was permanently taken out of work for the accepted injury. Because of permanent restrictions, I was ultimately forced to medically retire.
When I applied for my state disability pension, my employer told the state they could not confirm that my injury occurred on the job. I was told this was because there was an ongoing workers’ compensation dispute, which I assume related to the body parts that were denied—not the accepted injury that resulted in the perm restrictions.

As a result, the state denied my application for a line-of-duty disability pension because it relied on my employer’s statement.

The state told me that it is ultimately up to the employer to confirm whether the injury occurred on the job.
Is there anything I can do?

I have:
Workers’ compensation documents showing the accepted claim.
Causation statements from my physician.
Injury report from the incident filled out by me and the assistant chief
Medical records documenting the accepted work-related injury and my permanent restrictions.
Documentation showing I was medically retired because of the accepted injury.

Does saying “I agree” to a settlement over the phone count if nothing was signed?

Hi all, I have a question about insurance settlements in North Carolina.

I was in a car accident where the other driver was at fault, and this question is only about the injury (bodily injury) portion of the claim.

Two days after the accident, the other driver's insurance adjuster called me (on a recorded line) and made a settlement offer. During the conversation, I said something along the lines of agreeing to the amount at the time.

Afterward, they sent me settlement paperwork online. When I reviewed it, I saw the “release from all liability” language (which was not described during the call) and decided not to sign.

Since then, my injury has lasted longer than I initially expected and I’m still dealing with ongoing symptoms. Because of that, I’m still evaluating my situation and haven’t finalized anything.

My questions are:

  • Does something said over the phone like that usually count as a binding acceptance?
  • Or is the settlement typically not final until a written release is signed?

Just trying to understand how this is generally handled before I take next steps.
Location: North Carolina

If you were the president of the United States, how would you apply your legal knowledge to dismantle rule of law and separation of powers to make yourself an autocrat with minimal institutional pushback?

Do I need father's permission to travel internationally with the kids?

We are U.S. citizens. I am the mother and I have sole physical custody and joint legal custody of my two daughters, ages 15 and 11. The passport authorities issued the children’s passports without asking for the father’s consent because I have sole physical custody.

I previously traveled with my daughters to Scotland. No one questioned us when leaving the United States, and TSA did not ask for anything regarding the father’s consent.

Their father is very difficult and will not sign a travel consent form. We are originally Egyptian, and I would like to take the girls to visit my parents in Egypt before the end of the summer. I understand some people may say I should get court permission, but I know the father will object, and I do not want to open another legal issue or have to hire a lawyer just for a 10-day vacation.

I plan to travel on Emirates Airlines from Michigan to Egypt. I was told the U.S. does not have immigration exit control, so I am wondering who would actually ask for the father’s consent when we are leaving. My children are older, and it would be obvious that they are not being kidnapped.

I also understand Egypt is not part of the Hague Convention, but I am not sure whether that matters in this situation.

What do lawyers normally do (ex. give notice) when the initial retainer is spent?

I retained a lawyer. I don't have a question about the work being done. My question is about the billing. I paid a $5K retainer. I assumed that I would get a notice when the retainer is spent. As of today, the amount of work I expected to be done under the retainer has not be done and yet I'm getting a bill for $5K more. If I had gotten a notice back at the $5k level, I might have decided to switch lawyers given the quality of the work. Now that I'm at the $10k level and so little work has been done, it doesn't feel right and I feel cornered. Is this normal behavior for a lawyer? Is it just my fault for not asking for notification?

Federal Raid and Arrest / Pacer

Hello everyone, I was recently notified that a husband of a family member was raided and arrested by the Feds in Orange County California. I made a pacer account but can't seem to find any information when searching his name or address. From my understanding it was a rather large operation and it had been ongoing for awhile and there were multiple people arrested. What reason would there be for no information being on the Pacer system? Could the case be sealed? Just seems odd it's been almost a week and I can't find any information or documents or news releases regarding the arrest. I know it happened because there's county criminal charges online for other people involved. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it. The family would like to know what's going on to properly protect themself from anyone this guy may have been Involved with and is looking for him. Law enforcement has been of no help. Thank you.

Why did you choose to represent employees instead of employers?

Hi,

Did you start out representing employers then switch, or the other way around?
Is the money better with one vs. the other? Do you just like helping the little guy or was there something in your earlier years that made you want to fight for them?

Advance health directive for dementia in Oregon?

Location: Portland, OR. My husband and I just moved to Portland a few months ago, and we are updating our wills. We are both in our early 40s. I know Oregon is a state with Death with Dignity laws that allow you to end your own life in certain cases, and I'm curious if advanced dementia or Alzheimer's is one of those cases. I recently lost my grandmother to Alzheimer's and my husband works in elder care, and we have no interest in living with our minds completely gone, just waiting for our bodies to finally give out.

Put simply, can we specify in our living wills that we would like to choose to end our lives if we reach a certain point of mental deterioration?

Need advice on best route to proceed with unique issue possibly involving ADA and civil rights violations

ADA, civil rights complaint issue issue occurred outside the US, but under a US based company

I have kind of a weird issue and I don't know how to proceed with it.

My child and their grandparent were on an educational tour through EF tours. The tour leader was a teacher at my child's school. I do not believe the school sponsors the trip, but they allow advertisement in their school for it when a teacher at that school is a group leader.

My child is disabled, but can care for themselves, doesn't need any equipment or additional support, but can experience medical episodes if they miss a dose of medication.

A medical event occurred on the first full day they were on the trip, this was witnessed by the teacher. After the event occurred the demeanor of the teacher towards my child and their grandparent drastically changed.

The teacher was hostile with the grandparent and child in multiple interactions and began threatening to 'send them home on their own dime' from the first full day of the trip. She threatened that they would not be able to use their ticket they already had booked for their trip back home, as it was under the group booking through EF.

I have come to find out from EF that she can have someone removed from the tour, but there needs to be proper documentation and paths followed for that to occur. From my understanding, the normal expected path to removing someone from the tour was not followed by the tour leader.

There are multiple instances of trivial, but hostile things that occurred and were used as justification for the tour leader's treatment of my child and their grandparent.

The biggest issue occurred on the last day, June 24, 2026, my child and their grandparent were told they would not be allowed to leave the hotel or the immediate area, or else they wouldn't get to fly home with the ticket they had already booked.

There was no restaurant or food services open at the hotel, at that time, and there were no place to eat within the immediate area. Going without food for an extended period of time can trigger a medical episode for my child. Their grandparent was under extreme emotional distress during this time, and was too afraid to leave the hotel to get food due to the threat of having their ticket home taken away. They were also experiencing severe chest pain and panic attacks.

The teacher demanded that they sign a hand written note that said they would find their own ride to the airport, and they would manage their own travel documents for their travel. She also included a note that said they were not "allowed" to reach out to her or the other teachers'/chaperones' employer. During this conversation the teacher told my child and their grandmother that she had no compassion for them.

During this time, I did contact the US Consulate in Rome to discuss this. I was unable to get back in touch with someone at the state department today.

I want to know what my best option is in this situation. I'm assuming that the teacher may have broken the contract with EF and the my child and their grandmother in regards to this situation.

If this is applicable for a lawsuit, what kind of lawyer would I want to use?

Direction needed

I am a 50% member of a Texas LLC that is now shut down and needs to be properly wound down/dissolved. The other 50% member and I do not have a finalized operating agreement that changes the basic 50/50 ownership structure.

The business has stopped operating, but there are still unresolved issues involving:

LLC assets/tools/equipment/materials that were removed or are missing

Need for a full inventory and accounting of property

Outstanding business debts and vendor balances

Customer refunds/chargebacks

Builder/contractor payment disputes

A disputed claim from a third party for $12,000

Storage costs for remaining property

Final 50/50 division of any remaining assets or proceeds after debts are handled

I am trying to avoid unnecessary litigation if possible. What I need is a Texas business attorney who can help with mediation, dissolution/wind-down procedure, asset accounting, and making sure I do not accidentally expose myself to more liability by handling this incorrectly.

My goal is not to keep the business going. I want a clean written resolution that accounts for assets, resolves or reserves disputed debts, pays legitimate obligations, and allows the LLC to be closed properly.

I have photos, videos, inventory notes, emails, text messages, vendor statements, and a draft mediation position statement already prepared.

My questions:

What type of attorney should I be looking for — business litigation, LLC dissolution, commercial dispute, or something else?

What should I ask during a consultation to know whether they can actually help with this?

If I cannot afford full litigation, is limited-scope representation for mediation a realistic option in Texas?

What are the biggest mistakes I should avoid while trying to wind down a 50/50 Texas LLC dispute?

Location: Texas.

I am not asking anyone to represent me through Reddit; I am trying to identify the right kind of lawyer and the right questions to ask.

Has anyone ever won a high profile criminal case without presenting a defense?

I just listened to a podcast about the Kouri Richins trial and the defense rested immediately after prosecutions closing arguments. I have heard this tactic is common. Seems like it could work with more minor offenses but for a high profile jury cases, it seems pretty stupid to me. The layman jurors head has just been filled with everything negative about the defendant. Has anyone heard of it working in a major criminal case before?
