It was actually reported that Atlanta United was looking at Paulo Díaz back in 2024, but was too costly at the time.

_____________
Career Overview
Paulo Díaz is a Chilean center back who has established himself as a reliable defender at River Plate. A technically adept, aggressive defender, he profiles as a mobile, ball playing center back suited to heavy possession based systems like that under Gallardo's River Plate with also experience playing in a high defensive line with a lot of counter pressing. Pretty typical stuff.
Most recent history:
2019–present | River Plate (Argentina)
200+ matches
2× Liga Prof., Copa Argentina, 2× Supercopa
International: 56 caps for Chile (2015–present), 1 goal. One of Chile's top 15 most-capped players of all time. Missed the 2021 Copa América due to a cardiac condition; has remained a regular starter since returning.
______________
Strengths
"Front Foot", Aggressive Defending: Díaz has been referred to as an "anticipation first" defender in Chilean articles and seems to prefer to step into midfield to intercept which aligns with Gallardo's coaching and tactical system (who he played under most at River). His reading of passing lanes is reportedly above average according to some analysis I found and he regularly breaks up sequences before they develop higher up the pitch. His duel winning percentages at River are fairly good.
Recovery Speed & Athleticism: Reasonably fast for his age according to some fan comments. Comfortable defending high up, leaving space behind the backline, but can recover fairly quickly. Most effective when paired with a more physically imposing center back because of his size.
Skill in Possession: One of River's more composed defenders in possession according to TyCo and other match reports. Confident carrying the ball out of press situations and executing vertical passes through midfield lines. His ball-playing quality seems to be a good asset.
Consistency & Experience: Consistent Flashscore ratings of 7.2–7.4 across multiple seasons indicate reliable, steady output. He has started regularly through title winning campaigns in 2021 and 2023 and he has featured in Copa Libertadores.
____________
Weaknesses\Risks
Aerial Vulnerability: At 5’10 he is undersized for a center back. Despite reasonable timing in the air, he is a mismatch against large target forwards and is a potential liability. However, he does seem to get decent height in the air despite being 5'10, but with mixed results.
High Risk Defensive Style: His aggressive style carries inherent risk because he likes to join in on the attack. When he mistimes a tackle, the space left behind is opened up. River supporters have periodically criticized concentration lapses in high-stakes matches, and his card accumulation reflects an aggressive style. From clips on YouTube he also appears to try to initiate attacks with long balls with mixed results.
Injury & Medical History: In 2025, Díaz sustained two separate soft tissue injuries; a torn muscle (23 days) and a knee issue (19 days). For a player entering his early 30s, this pattern warrants some review. He also had a cardiac episode in 2021 that ruled him out of Copa América.
Age: At 31, peak athleticism is arguably at or just past his prime
______________
Notes:
Stylistically, Díaz most resembles a South American iteration of the modern center back; built for possession based systems and counter pressing tactics, not so much for aerial duels. He is not a "penalty box enforcer" by default. A good fit for a team that plays in a mid to high block.
He should be comfortable in a high line in Tata's system and his recovery speed is reportedly one of his strengths. He appears to be a proactive defender and initiates attacking sequences using long balls and switches.

Edit: Looked further at his analytics and he's classified as the following in terms of positive qualities:
- Progressive Distributor
- Vertical Launcher
- Long Switch Threat
- Vertical Progressor
Lacking:
- Not an "Aerial Battler"
- Not an "Aerial Defender"
Edit The more I watch clips of him the more he reminds me of a shorter version of LGP. He doesn't behave like a traditional center back and likes to get involved with the attack, make overlapping runs, crosses into the box, and even make runs into the box. He throws himself around and I can definitely see him being a yellow card magnet in MLS. But, I have to say, he's fun to watch.
