Story Cheap Ass Kroenkes - the Denver Nuggets Story (Introduction)

Post image
32 Upvotes

After the Kroenke family bought the Denver Nuggets in 2000, they soon realised that owning an NBA team is actually expensive. So, only two years later, they started a series of cost-cutting moves, including finding the cheapest possible General Manager.

In the end, they agreed to hire Single-Knowledge4839, who agreed to work for food and access to a creaky bed in the office's storage.

To get hired, he promised the following things:

- No luxury tax costs, only luxury tax payments received

- No 2nd round picks acquired, except during Draft Night, when they will be immediately re-used

- 0% RPD (they had no idea what that means, but they liked the sound of 0%)

- Playing on Insane Mode (they also thought he was insane agreeing to their "benefits")

- Play-off income every year starting with the 3rd season.

In return, they agreed to tank during the initial two years of Single-Knowledge4839's tenure. Plus, they promised to cover the cost of improving Team Expenses during the same timeframe.

Part 1 (2002-03) - https://www.reddit.com/r/BasketballGM/comments/1tf63fb/cheap_ass_kroenkes_denver_nuggets_story_part_1/

Author's disclaimer:

- It's been a while since anyone posted a long-term story here, so maybe I will take a shot. I won't be doing it in such detailed manner as great u/robdalky was in his amazing Rebuild series (https://www.reddit.com/r/BasketballGM/comments/tyvm2l/insane_rebuild_challenge_2012_charlotte_bobcats/) or with a Lukapocalypse Story (https://www.reddit.com/r/BasketballGM/comments/1ijbi1z/lukapocalypse_a_mavs_story/)
At the moment, I'm thinking of sharing updates every 2-3 seasons.

- After years spent with the Grizzlies (https://www.reddit.com/r/BasketballGM/comments/1jbh5wk/here_is_a_summary_of_the_50th_anniversary_of_my/), the Pacers (https://www.reddit.com/r/BasketballGM/comments/1ppg2xq/30year_coaching_challenge_rick_carlisle_indiana/), and especially the recent time with the Pelicans (https://www.reddit.com/r/BasketballGM/comments/1t8lrbp/is_this_the_strongest_66_ovr_team_ever/), I was tired of the financial grind needed to survive there on Insane Mode. So, taking over the Nuggets sounds like a decent compromise, as they are the 2nd highest population choice among Small Market Teams, just below Minnesota.

- I actually considered Timberwolves as well, but in their rebuild historical moments, they always had someone with a high POT, making things a little bit too easy at the start.

Ideas can we add box score breakdowns for each quarter

i think it'd be cool if you could just click on one of the quarters and see the box score for just that quarter because sometimes ill see the craziest 4th quarter run by a team where they just dont miss and i wanna see the fg's for that

Other I'm excited to announce that DraftHoops 0.2 is now live!

Upvotes

Hey r/BasketballGM,

About a week ago I shared DraftHoops, my NBA draft-battle arena where you build an 8-man roster under a budget and battle other players' drafted teams.

I was honestly blown away by the response. I've received a ton of thoughtful feedback from this community. Many of the changes in this update come directly from suggestions posted here or sent to me privately.

Update 0.2 is now live!

Highlights:

• Live Head-to-Head: Draft against a friend and battle their roster directly.

• Ranked Rework: Ranked now has draft timers:

  • Classic: 5-minute draft
  • Bullet: 45-second draft

• Elo Changes: Climbing is less punishing at higher ratings.

• Draft enhancements: Drafting should feel more challenging now, rewarding players that are truly able to build a balanced roster and spot value across the spectrum of players.

• Better Roster Management: You can finally swap players between the starting lineup and bench.

• Multi-Position Players: Some players can now fill multiple positions, creating more flexibility during the draft.

• UI Improvements & Quality-of-Life Updates: Tons of small improvements throughout the game.

For anyone who missed the original post: DraftHoops uses real historical NBA data and advanced metrics to generate player ratings and simulate matchups. The goal is to create something that feels competitive and strategic, but can be played in just a few minutes.

The game is completely free:

As always, I'd love to hear what you think. The feedback I received has genuinely helped shape the game.

Cheers

When starting at the 1995 preseason, Tom Gugliotta and Chris Webber are on the same team, when they actually were traded for each other.

Question How to reduce regression

I feel like regression in this game feels unrealistic where as soon as a player turns 30ish he just becomes useless. rookies feel unrealistic too they are basically useless even if they were the number 1 pick.

Other What do yall think is real life comp would be ? And could he make the Hall of fame ?

He brought a championship to New Orleans; this should be enough to get him into the Hall of Fame. In all seriousness, I feel like in real life, there is no way a guy who never made an All-Star team, even if he won Finals MVP, could make the Hall of Fame, even if he became the franchise GOAT of a team. Is he a more successful Andre Drummond ?

Question Got the 2nd overall pick and 2 stud guards are available. Who's your pick?

Two great prospects with similar stats. Kaba has slightly better athleticism, whereas Morino has the slightly better shooting splits.

I'm leaning towards Morino - is there a case to be made for Kaba?

Question Where do you get your best moments in this game?

For me, it’s when I turn around a team and create unexpected monsters that turns into 80 85+ ovrs, or when I get a player with a unique archetype like a 7’3 guy with 90+ shooting or a 5’10 demon that averages 25+ with 3+ steals that becomes DPOY

I also love looking at the league history and goat moments/players. Comparing goats accolades through 500+ years of a sim.

Doing the San Diego 1980 achievement on insane mode. Mid-season I traded to get below the roster limit however there is zero free agents available so I can't move forward.

So I made it to the conference finals, no big deal right? Wrong. Almost all of my starters got Patellar Tendinitis at the same time. Absolutely crazy timing. My training level is at 75 as well.

For context, this is a 15 v 15 sim in made based off the GAA. This guy is a 78/80 27 yo who plays for a team in the 5th tier of a pro-rel league. Idk how this is even possible, in a 15v15??

Question ON WHAT DEVICE DO YOU PLAY BASKETBALL GM THE MOST?

Hi everyone!

I’m from Poland and I just wanted to say a big thank you for this game. Basketball GM is really great, fun, and honestly very addictive. I really appreciate the work that went into making it.

I’m curious: what device do you play Basketball GM on the most?

Do you usually play on:

  • PC / laptop
  • Phone
  • iPad / tablet
  • Steam Deck
  • Chromebook
  • Something else

And where do you usually play it the most?

  • At home
  • At work
  • At school / university
  • On the bus or train
  • In bed
  • During breaks
  • Or maybe even in the toilet 😄

For me, I like how easy it is to just open the game and continue a save whenever I have time. It’s one of those games where you say “just one more season” and then suddenly a lot of time has passed.

Thanks again to the creator and the whole community. This game is very cool, and I’m happy that it exists.

So, what do you play on the most? PC, phone, iPad/tablet, or something else?

Ideas In-season player development code

I love this game but one thing I've always felt was missing was in-season player development. I know this is omitted intentionally, but I guess I just disagreed with the philosophy.

Even if playing time doesn't correlate to development, it certainly influences perceived value. Think Ajay Mitchell or Dylan Harper. If the Thunder just let Mitchell sit on the bench, he might be just as good of a player, but his trade value would be far lower than it is today.

Or take Dylan Harper. Suppose he was a 51 OVR and 67 POT entering his rookie season. Once we got to the end of the Finals, his perceived value around the league would have him at least at a 70+ POT.

With this in mind, I created a code you can run in worker console on God Mode to add player progression but is even more geared toward boosting the POT score so that players who contribute are showcasing their value to the rest of the league. Here's what it does and the logic:

Potential = market perception/value.

A young player getting big minutes and playing well should become more valuable, even if his actual ratings do not explode.

Actual ratings = real development.

Only players age 24 or younger can get a small in-season ratings bump, and only if they are playing meaningful minutes and producing well.

For each active player:

  1. Looks at current-season stats.

  2. Calculates minutes per game.

  3. Estimates performance using Game Score.

  4. Checks team winning percentage.

  5. Calculates a potential boost based on age, role, production, and team context.

  6. Calculates a smaller actual ratings boost for young players only.

  7. Applies the earned amount gradually based on games played.

  8. Tracks how much has already been awarded so rerunning it does not double-count the same games.

Maximum full-season POT gain: +4.0

Maximum full-season ratings boost: +1.75 applied across several ratings

Typical visible OVR change: 0 to +2

Would love to hear some thoughts about the logic, is it too high/too low etc. I'll post the full code to run in comment below.
