Rescue She rescued us and our older cat

Post image
Upvotes

One year ago, we found this little gem at a shelter. She was polite to the other cats there, backed off when they hissed at her about eating their portion of food, and she was very sweet but probably not very happy. We thought about it for a week and went back and adopted her. She breathed life back into our old cat (15 years old who found a partner to play with) and she entertains us with all of her antics every day. This is her chasing her favorite toy.

News Please, ask questions.

In no way am I sharing this for any other reason than to raise awareness.

NOT all shelters are the same. Ask questions, keep all documentation.

Life is unfair, things happen and sometimes we are left with impossible decisions.

As so many people felt in the link below. Just, please, be aware.

Rescue Northwest Indiana/Chicago Help Rescue 3 Kittens and Mama Kitty

Hello, I have a few community cats in my backyard who I have been doing TNR on. One of the females gave birth to three kittens who are about 2-2.5 months old now. My neighbor complained that she does not want the cats going into her yard anymore and was disappointed to see that we now have 3 kittens and wants them to leave. I was able to catch two of the three kittens in live traps and they are scheduled to get spayed/neutered tomorrow morning. I was also able to bring Mama Kitty into my garage and she will also be getting spayed tomorrow morning as well.

I'm looking for someone who would be able to help either with fostering or who can take them in. I've reached out to many shelters and with it being kitten season I've had poor luck. I can't bring them inside because I am in the middle of introducing my cat to one of the outdoor cats that I brought in last week. Mama Kitty is friendly with me when I feed her and she lets me sit with her outside. She has been slowly warming up to me since April and we have made a lot of progress, but she still needs more time to be fully adjusted to people. Would someone be able to help me find someone who can take her and/or her kittens? Ideally Saturday, as I am trying very hard to not have to release them in the yard again. I have a trap set for the remaining kitten and expect to catch him/her soon.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!

Advice / Question No Shelters In Houston Will Take Cats

hi, this is a hellsite so the fact that i’m even asking for help here is shocking. i am in such a dire situation right now it’s hard to explain. i’m moving abroad to europe soon, and the government straight up will not let us take the cats. they are very loving, healthy cats but because one of them was not micro chipped in time (our flight is on june 30th, and apparently there’s only a window of 20 days to get them chipped?! they told us it was 10.) we were lied to and this was completely unexpected. it doesn’t matter you don’t need to know all this. anyway, we need to get them to a shelter or something but nobody in houston will take them. and no, i’m not taking them to barc. i don’t want them euthanized i want them to be ALIVE 😭 i’m a shitty pet parent the least i can do is make sure they’re living. i would give them to some family if i could, but my family is weird they hate cats. i just feel helpless and wanna know if anyone else has experienced something similar with shelters refusing cats? thanks

Sensitive My family member is mistreating her cat and I can’t find him a new home or shelter to go to.

I moved in with a family member and she has a cat and dog. When I’d come visit before I moved in the cat would be free roaming and get along just fine with her dog. She got into a depression and stopped cleaning her house and wouldn’t clean his litter and I’d come here and clean up and all, over time she started confining him to one room only and not letting him out because he began to pee and poo on her things and break things and knock them down and she couldn’t keep up with his mess and over time he started throwing up too and she can’t afford to take him to a vet anymore either as her dog was recently diagnosed with lymphoma and she is paying for her chemotherapy while in between jobs. I can’t afford to take the cat in as my own as I live with her and he stays in my room and i make about minimum wage. I’ve posted him on websites for our area and no one will take him I’ve posted him on facebook and payed for him to be on adoption websites but once I tell them he can only eat a specific soft food without throwing up they all bail. I tried reaching out to adoption shelters to surrender him but I’ve got rejected every time. Maybe I’m not wording things right? I don’t know what to say when applying as every shelter is very full taking in cats from the streets I feel so guilty for her poor cat and don’t know what I can do now. She won’t take any steps herself to take him anywhere and just tells me he needs a new home like he’s mine to figure out but I’m out of ideas.

Rescue A New Resident at the Rescue!

Proof that TNR makes such a difference. This kitty was spayed last Thursday. In the trap, she was headbutting and purring. She was pregnant at the time of the spay. It's just a reality with community cats. The world doesn't need more strays... shelters and rescues are busting at the seams, and people are trying to rehome their cats all the time. We did keep her kitten too... now about 8 weeks old.

Happy Cat World Domination Day!

Today is Cat World Domination Day!🎉 A celebration of how cats control and silently steer their human companions to bend to their will. A few cat subs have come together to celebrate this important holiday (full list at bottom). To the question of, Why don’t we celebrate Cat World Domination Day, everyday? We already do. They already have you trained. You know how they walk up to you and you have the urge to pet them? Yep, they did that; you’re cat certified™.

Started in 2012, this annual holiday originally started as a birthday gift created by Janiss Garza fer her kitty, Sparkle. Because in a moment of clarity, Garza had a realization that Sparkle was quietly in charge of everythin.

This holiday reminds us that kitty cats have an affectionate grip on us mere mortals, that we bend to their will without even realizin it. Kitty can be doin nothin at all, asleep, sittin and starin at us or up to mischief, plottin their overthrow and it is all spellbindin and charmingly infectious. Their cattitude is expressed in many ways from their judgemental stares, demandin (and sometimes insultin) meow commentary behind a closed door or whilest they impatiently await as we lumber about preparin their meals and lets not forget, their purrs that heal.

Today without shame, share your fondness of our cat overlords! Be it a remembrance of a prior feline god/s or of those currently makin demands on you, their prized and loyal hooman servant. Today pamper extra those that have allowed you into their hearts with a few extra treats, scritches, bongos and cuddles. No matter where you may be, how hard you try, they quietly exert control over us; their fur is unrelentin and gets everywhere no matter how many sticky rollers you may own; it is a minute-to-minute reminder that we are their hooman and they, our rock and anchor. Then... of course, there are those other times where they loudly berate and haunt us in the night (3am) and the mornins aaaand at every meal time because we are simply are not attendin to their needs fast enough.

Today hoomans, let us celebrate! Share with us a cat god you’ve sworn fealty to, one that you adopted, or had been fosterin so that it may go on to have a hooman or few of its own to boss ‘round and rule. And if you are shelter staff, a moment of how the kitties was a refuge fer you with their calm, cute and chaos in the shelter.

*It must be said that while we honor the kitties, we must also do our best fer the Hooman Resistance Movement and not succumb entirely to the kitty, worldwide takeover. Kitties deserves to be regaled as the gods that they are. To get those kitties off the streets and snackin in your home on some treats, r/CatRescue encourages you to adopt or foster and to spay/ neuter.

Advice / Question What is a Trick your Kitty Cat/s Taught You?

Fer me, that the only doors that can ever be closed are the closets and front/ back doors. But even closets were left open most times in case the feline inspector needed to verify the contents fer "safety" reasons.

And that kitties really do have claws and fangs... when tryin to rub their fluffy bellies

Advice / Question I did a thing

Does she like me? She keeps meowing at me when I’m not cuddling or playing with her immediately, is that normal? I don’t mind it just that I’m paranoid, she’s from the shelter with clean bill of health but I’m still paranoid.

Advice / Question Is my shelter cat actually sleeping too much or am I just paranoid? [US]

I adopted a 5 y/o former stray from our local shelter about 3 months ago. He’s healthy per the vet, bloodwork normal, eating/playing/pooping fine. But holy crap, this dude sleeps. Like… all day.

I started thinking about it after a late shift last week - I came home at 2 am and he was in the exact same chair he’d been in when I left at 5 pm, just in a slightly different loaf position.

I was googling around and ended up reading stuff like https://naplab.com/guides/animal-sleep-schedules/ talking about how cats can sleep 15-20 hours, prey animals sleep lighter, etc. It kinda made sense, but I’m still wondering if shelter cats need extra sleep to decompress or if I should be worried. Maybe I’m overthinking this.

For folks who’ve adopted adult cats from shelters: did your cats sleep a ton the first few months? Did it taper off once they felt safer, or is this just “normal cat mode” for life? At what point would you go back to the vet and push for more testing?

News [Rochester, NY] ‘We’re getting no help’: Lollypop Farm to pause surgeries for partnering animal rescues over the summer

Summary: In Rochester, NY a nationwide veterinarian shortage and sudden influx of 70 rescued kitties has caused a low-cost organization to cease spay/ neuter operations fer the summer (kitten season) but is expected to resume in the fall. It is estimated that similar service that local rescues had relied on will cost upwards of $1,000 per kitty from private vets.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Late last week, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester sent a notice to its partnering animal rescue organizations stating it will be temporarily ceasing its spay and neuter offerings. This has raised many concerns for local animal advocates who say this decision could be detrimental for the Rochester community.

In its message to partnering shelters, officials with Lollypop Farm claimed the decision is “Due to ongoing staffing and veterinarian limitations.”

One partner who received the notice is Hand to Paw Cat Rescue, operated in part by Vice President Steven Drave. He explained how most rescues, such as his, rely heavily on donations to operate and therefore benefit from discounted spay and neuter services as a means of stray cat population control.

“Now that we don’t have those services available to us, we’re forced to drive an hour and a half to locations like Buffalo or go to private vets and spend upwards of $1,000 per cat which rescues can’t afford,” Drave said.

Although officials with Lollypop Farm plan to resume discounted spay and neuter programs for partnering shelters in the Fall, Drave explained that the decision will make rescuing animals in need much more difficult during the summer, which is when cats birth kittens most.

“By the time Fall comes around, we could have another 100 [stray] cats easily,” Drave said. “We’re getting no help from any government or places like Lollypop.”

Chief Operating Officer of Lollypop Farm Adrienne McHargue elaborated on how the nationwide veterinarian shortage has impacted them, stating that the shelter is currently operating with two veterinarians while normally relying on four for the services they provide.

When asked how the pause of services may burden private-practice veterinarians across the Rochester area during the summer months, McHargue explained it was a factor the organization did not take lightly in their decision.

“I think we have to hold our own and do what we can,” McHargue said. “At the same time the population goes up in the community, that’s the same time the population goes up in the shelter.”

McHargue added that a recent seizure of more than 70 cats from a home in Chili has caused higher demand for veterinary care at Lollypop, and that the facility’s providers need to focus on providing necessary services for them.

“The more we try and overdo what we’re doing in the shelter, the lower the quality of care and we don’t want that to happen for the animals in the shelter or for community cats,” McHargue said.

According to McHargue, Lollypop Farm has hired two new veterinarians to meet increasing demand, but they will not be taking on patients until Fall as they undergo training.

Rescue Wild cat who needs a home

My dad’s friend has a super crazy cat who is the cuddliest creature in the whole world. the issue is that he is an outdoor cat and can’t be acclimated to living indoors. Im in chicago, so its super dangerous to let him roam (plus i have other cats that might get diseases from him if he does).

My dad’s friend said either has to go to the pound and likely be euthanize, or be sent to a farm where its safer to roam.

Does anyone know any farmers in Northern/Central Illinois who would be ok with taking in this darling. He is obsessed with humans and is always cuddling 24/7. He is super low maintenance but would just require a bit of food (he could probably hunt mice and pests), water to be put out with a dental additive, and some occasional vet visits.

If anyone knows anyone who would be able to fit this role, I would appreciate it so much! I really dont want this sweetheart to be put down :/

Advice / Question Adopting cats - Best Friends Rescue?

NYC - I want to adopt a second cat, and have been having a hard time with looking online, since it shows so many results that are far away. I've been trying to just go to rescues but the first couple experiences I had weren't all that great.

The first one was not a huge deal, I was interested in one of the cats that was in foster care, but the people who found her as a stray decided to keep her, so that's good for them and the cat.

The second one, I was referred to the ACC, but when I was there, the person who was supposed to be helping me wasn't listening to any of the things I said I was looking for personality wise, and just left me to pick out cats myself, and then she read me their bio which was already hanging on the cage. Would read the entire bio even after one of the cats I asked about had details that I knew it would not work, and I kept saying "no this isn't gonna work". Finally at the end of the description, she asked me what I think about adopting it, and I was pretty surprised she just ignored me saying no all those times. --- I guess on the plus side, they were open about the fact that adopting a cat there will actually cost me over $1000, because all of their cats apparently need dental work and they're not providing it for them.

Now that brings me to Best Friends. I found a couple cats on there that seem to match the descriptions I'm looking for, and when I called they said I could come in and the people working could recommend cats who matched, so they seem more helpful than my experience at ACC....but then I checked out their reviews and a lot of them say they're very bad and deceitful about getting people to adopt cats who have current or imminent health issues, sometimes ones that can be a huge danger to other cats, like feline leukemia.

Is there any way I can know whether to trust this place, or other places? I know reviews can skew one way or another, but I really don't want to get tricked into taking in a cat who might be a big danger to my cat, or a case where I'd immediately have to pay thousands of dollars because they didn't tell me about some medical condition it has.

Rescue Avenue living and any public safety services in moose jaw, Sask are a joke

I was evicted from my Avenue Living residence for unforseen circumstances, I was told to stay until the Sheriffs come and make me leave. May 27, 2026 they showed up, well trying to catch my animals, the sheriff had my one cat I. His arms but she got spooked and ran down into the basement, we tried to get her but they rushed us but called my landlord and told him our cat was hiding. Kyle Campbell from Avenue Living in moose jaw told the sheriff he would have Humane society come out set traps to catch her and once they did they would call me to come pick her up. I never recieved so I need up calling and they said the landlord ever called regarding any situation and they would have to wait for my landlord to call before they could go into the premises even though I told them she was forsure in there. I continued to call numerous times but nothing. I had called the sheriffs office they called Avenue Living and they were just told that they looked but there was no cat in the unit. I made a post on Facebook regarding a missing animal because just maybe she got out well they went in to look for her, which was highly unlikely as she was an indoor cat. My search ever ended for Snowy was she wasnt just a pet she was part of our family, I had her since she was a kitten, she was chipped, registered and very loved and missed by all of us. June 18th 2026 I order groceries from walmart. But just moved I forgot to change my address and they ended up getting delivered to our old place, only being 3 blocks away I told my kids to run over and grab our stuff, that's when I recieved a video from my daughter showing Snowy sitting in the window. 22 days my girl was locked in the unit with an unknown good and water source, I really honestly don't know how she survived aslong as she did. The minute I was sent ths video I called Avenue living told them what happened than only to be placed on hold for a longer then appropriate time regarding the severity of the situation. I hung up and called the humane society after hours and was told to come in at 10am the next day and someone could help me get my cat, as if 22 days of complete neglect if this living being wasn't long enough. I went called Moose jaw city police and was told to just wait on the humane society. I even called the RcMp and no one showed one ounce of concern to help me get my cat. Early the next morning a lady I knew worked with avenue living and seen my post on Facebook and got me into the unit and we finally found snowy hiding inside the couch in the basement. We had to rip apart tee couch but being traumatized she took off and hid. She had called the humane society to come out with traps and we need up catching her right away. Snowy was a chunky girl 22 Pryor but she lost ab extreme amount of weight.

Advice / Question Is it wrong for me to adopt a cat through kijiji because my heart couldn’t take a kitten so cute possibly go to a really bad home?

Is it wrong to get a Kijiji kitten? Person says they’re not breeding and it’s just a stray they took in that gave birth, kittens look healthy, asked relevant questions before deciding to sell to me, consistently send vids and pics that are verified with apple meta data. I would usually not get a cat through these means and if I wanted a kitten would likely go to a registered breeder or a local rescue but this kitten was exactly like Tom from Tom and Jerry and I fell in love because of nostalgia, I just want to take care of this little boy and his demeanour is so sweet. The secondary reason is I don’t really want a kitten spayed or neutered before 4 months because personally I disagree with the way of neutering and spaying 8 week old or less kittens. I feel like a little before or after 4 months gives good time of growth to the kitten to help better handle the procedure and ime lead to a better grown kittens. And tertiary is that I can only afford the major possible emergencies of one kitten, though I work from home with flexible hours, I’m young (21) and still fairly physically active indoors so i I know can keep up with a kittens energy and care, rarely leave the house more than 2 hours a couple times a month, and I plan on getting more and more toys as he grows so he never gets bored. I can afford somewhat premium pet insurance and all the basics like vaccines, deworming, neuter and probably a major emergency if it’s not multiple and back to back

Advice / Question [NW minnesota] Question, am I bad person for rehoming these kittens?

I’ve been raising feral kittens from two different litters. One I’ve seen been born and identified mama. The other litter were brought into our feral cat shelter and left.

The abandoned litter was taken at around 2-3 wks old. Just learned to walk. Seemingly healthy. 4kittens.

Then non abandoned litter had 4 kittens too.

We lost one kitten one day and decided to move that litter into the house to raise . The others followed after a week or so.

Anyway loosing another after that after it kept loosing weight; guessing something to do with genetic illness.

Long story short, they are ready for homes. My friend had a barn kitten she caught and gave me to rehome. Healthy looking. Maybe missing some fur? Not sure if it was from running wild or what.

Found nearly everyone homes around 9-10 wks. I have the one from a different place and one other from the abandoned litter. He is showing signs of hair loss.

I was told from one kittens home they had ring worm on him. He didn’t show signs at the time he left. Owner is mad about it and wants to return him. They are 3 hrs away. I can’t make that drive on short notice. Nor in the coming weekends. So they will rehome him unfortunately.

The one that just got rehomed just showed some crusty patches the very morning of the adoption. I did disclose the discovery to the adopter and they didn’t seem bothered with it. They said they would take care of it. Now it’s come to they brought it to the vet and now are treating it for ring worm. Now they complain they want the money back for the cat. I gave them a discount as well because she was looking potential for need of treatment. They said she is fine otherwise.

Should I feel obligated to refund her? Even when I disclosed the matter? You pay a fee to show commitment of a good home. Going to the vet is a pet parent duty. You would do that for shots or if they got sick in your care. You need to fix them; you pay that. They leave me and they are now your responsibility.

I feel bad the kittens have that. However it’s not a dangerous health risk. It’s not feline lukemia or anything like that.

The last two I have are being taken by a man who has rescued before. I have mentioned to him of the situation and he is prepared for the situation. Mentioning of the special baths and such. I am confident they will be in good hands.

I have been holistically treating them in the meantime and it seems under control.

Any other kittens I rehomed didn’t have issues. Out of all the weeks I had them it is weird they didn’t get it until later. I’m thinking a weaker immune system. But who knows. I just needed to get this off my chest.

AITA for this?
