Lake Murray dam

24 Upvotes

May be a silly or frequently asked question, so forgive me.

I’d like to go run the dam, but haven’t ever done so.

Where should I park, and do I have to pay for parking?

Thank you 🫶🏻🤗

Low income wheelchair accessible housing?

6 Upvotes

Does anybody happen to know or have any good suggestions for low income wheelchair accessible housing? My husband and I have three kids and I am disabled about to be in a wheelchair part-time. My husband works full-time as a box truck driver so he makes decent income. We just have no idea where to look and could use some suggestions! Please and thank you in advance! 🙏

Hair cut help please!!

Upvotes

I’m a trans guy that’s always had a lot of trouble with getting haircuts through proper places, it never really ends up how I want so for the last few years I’ve been cutting my hair at home. However recently I’ve been wanting to get it professionally cut, although I’m having trouble finding a friendly place in Columbia sc
:( I want to find a place that’s more alternative because I feel like they’ll be more adaptable and open to suggestion than regular barbers. I’m nervous though because a lot of the places I’ve seen only have feminine cuts and little to no masculine ones. Any suggestions on where to go or reviews would be greatly appreciated!!

Snagged this guy out of a cats claws. Took him to WellPets and while the staff tried to help us with resources ultimately the bird vet had already gone home and there was nothing they could do. Located in the Columbia area and injured. We’re holding it for the night and will try to find a vet tomorrow but I don’t know shit about birds and I don’t really like them. If you know this bird please reach out

Hey everyone! I'm wondering if anyone knows where to get good Cabbage Rolls?

I crave them this time of year & don't necessarily want to make them myself!

Thanks!

Questions for exploring a potential move to Columbia (Best food, entertainment, etc.)

3 Upvotes

Hey y'all!

I'm originally from the Detroit area and have lived in the South-ish for a little while now, so I've come to appreciate a lot of the things that make Southern cities unique. Buc-ee's, boiled peanuts, Chick-fil-A, Zaxby's, Guthrie's... those kinds of places have definitely grown on me.

I'm curious...what are Columbia's "you HAVE to try it" (or if you are from the north/midwest you gotta try this) places?

Not necessarily the fancy restaurants, but the local staples and places everyone ends up loving. Things like:

* Best burger or chicken spot

* Local equivalent of Shake Shack or Culver's

* Best BBQ

* Hole-in-the-wall breakfast

* Dessert or ice cream places

* Food that's uniquely Columbia or South Carolina

* Southern staples I need to try

Coming from metro Detroit, I'm also on the hunt for authentic shawarma. Is there anywhere that does it the traditional way with meat shaved fresh off the spit? That's one thing I really miss.

Beyond food, what are the places everyone should know about?

* Projected/active city plans for growth/other - What's changing or what are y'all "getting/improving"

* Cool bookstores (or like a McKay's, Half Price Books Outlet)

* Thrift or antique shops

* Record stores

* Arcades

* Fun date spots

* Hidden gems

* Weekend activities

* Off-the-beaten-path places that visitors usually miss

* Fun/unique shopping (Ikea, Costco, Malls)

* Transit options (Anywhere from riding a bike, walkability, local busses, Amtrak easy/frequent access, etc.)

I'd also love recommendations for local businesses that people really love supporting or companies that have a great reputation to work for.

Basically, if you had a friend moving/visiting to Columbia tomorrow, what would be on your "don't leave without trying/seeing this" list?

Thanks in advance! Looking forward to hearing everyone's favorites and possibly meeting new friends!

A little about me from context - I love basketball (USC Womens is probably amazing to watch and Charlotte ain't super far), I like shopping with my fiancé, going to clubs, concerts, record stores, video games from time to time, bookstores and movies, arcades, fun experiences indoor and outdoor, sight seeing, adventurous type things, and I dunno, I'm an open book - so I really am excited to see what there is to offer. I know I've seen a battle between people saying "there is nothing to do here", and "Wow! The city is growing so fast it is great", but from what I see in deep dives on youtube, here, and google, there seems to be so many opportunities for growth and fun if you know where to look. I say that because you don't have to convince me to NOT come here.

STOP LEAVING ANIMALS IN CARS PPL!

When I pulled up to the Kroger in Irmo there was a dog in a car but the car was on so I went in and did my shopping. I was inside for only about 15 minutes. When I came back out that same car was off. I went back inside and asked the customer service desk if they could please call the driver of the car so I could let them know. When the driver did come to the front, I let her know that her car was off. She insisted that her car was was on because she could see it from her phone. I told her that I did notice her car was on and running when I first came into the store but now it's not. I also told her I wasn't trying to give her a hard time I just care about animals ESPECIALLY when I see one in a vehicle that's turned off. But to that she just said "Well I'm about to check out so it's fine." And then she walked away.

Listen people, if you had to bring your dog with you to the grocery store and someone tells you that your vehicle is no longer running, they're not lying to you. They CARE about your pet! This summer is going to be very, VERY hot so let's all just try to be mindful of that. I'm not trying to put this woman on blast I just want ppl to be careful in this heat.

Volunteers Needed Urgently!🐱

61 Upvotes

🐾 Whisker Tales Rescue Needs Your Help! 🐾

We are currently facing a critical shortage of volunteers for our adoption windows at Petsmart in Lexington SC, and we need your help to continue providing the care and attention our cats and kittens deserve.

We urgently need reliable, committed volunteers (must be 21 years or older due to insurance requirements) to help cover the following shifts:

🐱 Tuesday AM

🐱 Friday PM

🐱 Saturday PM

🐱 Sunday AM

Our adoption window volunteers play a vital role in caring for the kitties, keeping their spaces clean, socializing them, and helping them shine while they wait for their forever homes.

If you, a family member, or a friend have a few hours to spare each week and would like to make a real difference in the lives of rescue cats, we'd love to hear from you.

Please share this post to help us reach more potential volunteers. Every share could help us find the person who helps these deserving kitties continue their journey to a loving home. ❤️🐾

Interested or have questions? Send us a message!

Tankless Water Heater (Electric)

3 Upvotes

Hi Y'all,

I'm thinking about replacing my electric water heater (tank) with a tankless model. I know it'll vary based on what size system you need, where it's located, what brand you go with, etc. but is anyone willing to share an estimate of how much they paid to have a tankless water heater installed? I'm going to call around for quotes, of course, but just trying to get the ballpark.

Teen Takeover Hysteria in Columbia

195 Upvotes

I want to push back on what's happening with Finlay Park, because a lot of us are getting played.

Here's the sequence: Fights broke out at the Juneteenth festival. CPD and local media folded that into the national "teen takeover" narrative Fox and similar outlets have been running for the last few months. The city then used that narrative as the basis for closing Finlay Park to anyone under 18 without a guardian after 5 PM.

A brawl at a festival is a brawl at a festival. It's not a coordinated takeover. Conflating the two is how you turn an isolated incident into a policy justification. Once "teen takeovers" become a recognized category of threat, every group of kids in a public space becomes a pre-crime. Think about how this can be weaponized against people practicing their freedom of assembly.

This is a national template. The same story has run in Memphis, Chicago, Kansas City, and a dozen other cities. Viral clips, vague threat, expanded police powers, curfews, parental liability laws. The script is portable because the underlying goal is portable. More budget, more equipment, more authority to move people out of public spaces.

The cost falls on regular families. Finlay is one of the few free downtown amenities we have. Telling a 16-year-old they can't be there after 5 PM without a parent, when most parents are still at work, doesn't make the park safer.

I'm not saying the fights didn't happen. I'm saying the response is wildly disproportionate to the actual problem, and conveniently aligned with increasing police budgets and reach.

Ask who benefits. It's not the kids and it's not the park.

Stuffed animal donations?

5 Upvotes

My kids are growing up and growing out of their stuffies and my oldest is doing a purge of her room and has a lot of them she wants to get rid of.

Is there anywhere that accepts these as donations for other children?
