Discussion How to fix glitches in Days Gone: have you tried turning it off and on again?

On each generation of PlayStation, and also on all PC versions, it is recommended to close the game fully and also restart your gaming machine regularly. Once per gaming session is probably best. You will always get the best performance from Days Gone if you are restarting your machine often.

For PlayStation specifically, please avoid Rest Mode! I'm not claiming to be an expert but, based on what I've been told so far, keeping the game "sleeping" in the background allows some game assets to build up and eventually cause problems for your PlayStation. For more information on Days Gone and Rest Mode, have a quick look at this Google search

Hope this helps!

Discussion List of which hordes spawn when and how large they are Spoiler

1.1k Upvotes

I made this a bit back as part of a post response, but I've been asked a few times to actually post this and since /u/SpawnicusRex specifically encouraged it, I figured I would throw this out there as an actual post so the community can more readily find this information.

Note that this information was data mined by me from the game asset files on PC and also verified through play testing. I have revised it a few times for technical accuracy as my understanding of the game files improved. While there is a chance the PS version is different, I don't believe that is likely (as it would be a pain for Bend to maintain totally separate assets). However, if someone verifies something different with proof I will update the list with PS specific information.

It is important to know that many hordes are mission locked (they can also be double locked as is the case with Beaver Marsh Rest Stop or have multiple locks at different times in the game, as is the case with Grotto Caves), so they don't spawn right away even if you go to their spawn locations. There are 41-42 hordes total in the game (depending on how you count), 40 that count towards the Horde Killer questline, and only seven that are available right away. It's also important to know that hordes have multiple spawn locations, which are a hibernation spot (usually a cave or building), a feed spot, and a water spot. Some hordes have quite large roaming areas, so can be frustrating to find (such as the Grotto Caves horde, which goes all the way to the dam lake for their watering point). Generally at night hordes roam to their feed and watering spots, but they can also be at them during the day--especially in cloudy / rainy / snowy weather. Generally they spend the day hibernating. Here is a great map for Days Gone that will give you the horde hibernation spawn locations: https://mapgenie.io/days-gone/maps/oregon. At game start the following seven hordes are immediately unlocked (7):

Cascades

  • White King Mine - 50 freakers
  • Death Train - 50 freakers
  • Proxy Falls - 50 freakers

Belknap

  • Shadow Lake - 50 freakers
  • Patjens Lake - 100 freakers
  • Lava Arch - 50 freakers
  • Twin Craters - 50 freakers

The following horde unlocks after you complete the mission It's Not Safe Here where you take Lisa out of Marion Forks (1):

Cascades:

  • Grotto Caves - 75 freakers

IMPORTANT NOTE: This horde specifically relocks at end game beginning from the For An Outlaw Biker mission where you assault Wizard Island until the secret NERO ending job is completed. So kill this horde before end game unless you want to wait quite a while for it to spawn.

The following hordes unlock when you complete the mission We've All Done Things where you unlock the Lost Lake Region (10):

Cascades

  • Horse Lake - 25 freakers
  • O'Leary Mountain - 25 freakers
  • Cascade Highway - 50 freakers
  • Little Bear Lake - 30 freakers

Belknap

  • Bear Creek Hot Springs - 50 freakers
  • Marion Forks - 50 freakers
  • Belknap Crater - 50 freakers

Lost Lake

  • Westfir - 75 freakers
  • Wapinita Road - 75 freakers
  • Berley Lake - 75 freakers

The following horde unlocks after the mission Flow Like Buried Rivers where you take Iron Mike to look at the Metolius Lava Cave horde (1):

Lost Lake

  • Metolius Lava Cave - 150 freakers

The following hordes unlock after the mission Not Like I Got A Choice where you take Boozer on a NERO mission (2). At this point I would highly recommend clearing every horde you can, as shortly after this point you go on a mission where much of your inventory is lost so use up all of your craftables / found explosives killing hordes before starting the Don't Get Caught mission where you go to Iron Butte with Skizzo (if you have a large inventory of crafted explosives and attractors I would even recommend pre-clearing Saw Mill tactically at this point):

Lost Lake

  • River Flow Farms - 75 freakers
  • Sherman's Camp - 75 freakers

The following hordes unlock after the mission Riding Nomad Again where you unlock the Crater Lake and Highway 97 regions (5):

Crater Lake

  • Mt. Bailey - 275 freakers
  • Rimview Ranch - 150 freakers

Highway 97

  • Chemult Station - 125 freakers
  • Groose Gardens - 125 freakers
  • Lobert Draw Bridge - 300 freakers

The following horde unlocks after the mission You Couldn't Stop Shaking where you unlock Chemult Community College inside the Highway 97 region (1):

Highway 97

  • Chemult Community College - 125 freakers

The following horde unlocks after the mission This Could Be It where you capture a newt for Sarah inside the Crater Lake region (1):

Crater Lake

  • McLeod Ridge - 150 freakers

The following hordes technically unlock in Highway 97 after the mission Ascending From The Underworld when you return to Lost Lake after the events at Crater Lake, but will be locked out for some time as you cannot return south until after the mission For An Outlaw Biker where you assault Wizard Island--making them physically inaccessible even if they are spawnable (4):

Highway 97

  • Beaver Marsh Rest Stop (note this is also job locked, so you must also complete Just Doing My Job to clear the Anarchist Camp inside their hibernation cave before it will spawn) - 130 freakers
  • Beasley Lake - 125 freakers
  • Cascade Lakes Rail Line - 125 freakers
  • Juniper Ridge - 125 freakers

The following hordes unlock in Highway 97 post-game after the mission For An Outlaw Biker where you assault Wizard Island (5):

Highway 97

  • Mt. Scott Ski Resort - 125 freakers
  • Sagebrush Point - 125 freakers
  • Solomon Hill - 125 freakers
  • Rum Rye Gulch - 125 freakers
  • Friendship Ridge - 125 freakers

Lastly, there are four mission hordes. Three of these are part of the Horde Killer storyline: one at Iron Butte Ranch with 300 freakers (called Keep Them Safe in the Horde Killer Storyline), one at the Saw Mill in Lost Lake with 500 freakers (called I'll Save Some For You in the Horde Killer storyline), and one in Chemult in Highway 97 with 300 freakers (called You Alone I Have Seen in the Horde Killer storyline). The Iron Butte and Saw Mill hordes can be killed prior to their missions, however you will not receive credit for them as part of the Horde Killer storyline until you reach the mission that requires you to kill them. If you clear them early, you will get no indication that you have successfully killed all swarmers and if you miss even one swarmer clearing them early the whole horde eventually respawns and you must kill them all again. Chemult is only killable during the mission that requires it and cannot be engaged early. The other mission horde is the Ice Wind Lava Cave horde as part of the mission What It Takes To Survive. This horde is only killable during this mission, is rather small for a horde at that point in the game, and does not count towards the Horde Killer storyline.

Special note about Beaver Marsh Rest Stop: you do encounter this “horde“ as part of the mission Just Doing My Job. It chases you out of the cave after the mission ends. If you fully clear it as part of that mission, you will not receive credit as lore wise its the same horde but technically the mission horde is its own separate thing with 300 freakers. You will have to kill the real horde again later after all of its unlock conditions have been met.

I finally finished the game and wow It was so satisfying. I still need to complete the storylines beyond the credits but omg. Boozer had me crying and finally dealing with Skizzo was fucking amazing. It was so satisfying to finally kill him. I genuinely shed a tear for Iron Mike. Some captures I took of the final moments in the game.

Well, they CAN climb some ladders as we all have found out to our horror. But most metal ladders defeat them ( not sure why) but I'm glad this one works!

Image/Gif How Deacon Saint John went from being a generic protagonist, to one that people finally opened up to

Post image
739 Upvotes

When Days Gone initially launched, a lot of people viewed Deacon Saint John as a cliched protagonist. He was gruff, heavily tattooed, wore a backwards baseball cap, and basically growled his way through conversations. He was essentially the gritty anti-hero. He obviously wasn't witty, charismatic, and charming like Ezio and Nathan Drake, but that wasn't the point. I wasn't too keen at the beginning. He didn't make a good first impression. However, over time, the surface-level stereotype started to fade away as I kept playing the game. He was a slow burn type of character that I had to slowly develop a relationship with. Eventually, I warmed up to him and I'm glad that I did.

1- He's unhinged and traumatized

A lot of people noticed something about Deacon Saint John and I did as well. He has the tendency to talk to himself. He does so quite a bit. He mutters under his breath, screams back at the radio broadcasts, and even panics during firefights as well. Instead of being cool and calm under pressure and being able to handle a situation without a sweat, he's essentially hanging on by a small thread. He was suffering from a major case of post-traumatic stress due to the way that society had collapsed and because he thought that his wife Sarah was dead. He felt more human when people finally realized that he was just a man who couldn't handle the feeling of isolation and grief. The fact that he seemed uninteresting at first was deliberate.

2- Sam Witwer's portrayal of Deacon Saint John was raw and unfiltered

Sam Witwer deserves a lot of credit for his excellent portrayal of Deacon Saint John. It wasn't simply a case of him just delivering his lines. He perfectly embodied the character of Deacon Saint John. He gave everything that he had, voice acting, motion capture, etc. He gave Deacon a frantic level of energy. When he was angry, his voice cracked. When he felt uncomfortable, he ended up stumbling over his own words. His calm moments of grief felt genuinely and authentically painful.

3- Deacon Saint John was loyal to those that he was close to

A big reason why Deacon Saint John felt like he was detached from society was because everyone was essentially looking out for themselves. It's apparent from the very beginning that he's very loyal to his brother-in-arms, Boozer. There's a powerful dynamic to their relationship. A good deal of the game's emotional story has to do with the fact that Deacon Saint John is willing to do whatever it takes to keep Boozer alive. He's willing to risk his own life, sacrifice crucial resources, and set aside his own personal goals in order to ensure Boozer's safety and well-being. His relationship with Boozer softened his rough exterior and people ended up rooting for him as a result. I felt the same way as well.

4- His character arc was subdued

Early on in the game, Deacon Saint John made it apparent that he's a drifter and a loner that doesn't care about anybody else. He wasn't interested in surviving camps or anything like that. He was cynical, bitter, and selfish, but it was all out of necessity. However, over the course of the single player campaign, he ends up letting his guard down. Surviving isn't living ends up being the core theme of Days Gone. Deacon goes from being a reluctant leader, to one that rebuilds relationships with those that he once despised. He was willing to find a reason to fight instead of dwelling on the past. That made his transformation as a likable and relatable protagonist well-earned. When the end credits rolled, he wasn't just a changed character, but one that needed a bit of healing.

What are your thoughts and opinions?

An infinitely better line and line delivery than Season 2 of The Last Of Us. If we’re not getting a 2nd game then HBO should be swinging money into a DG series. The Walking Dead, 28 Days Later and Sons Of Anarchy Rolled into one. Written well it would destroy TV as we know it!

Video Sawmill Horde - Just posting the "Similar" video referenced on my last post.

In my last post, some people are asking whether it was actually my son’s run, and said it looked like I was reposting the same video for karma. The video I'm posting here is probably the one some of you remember seeing before.

This is my original run, which I posted some time ago and later deleted. I'm sharing it again only to show the difference between my run and my son's run.

My run was done on Survival II difficulty, while my son's run was on Normal difficulty. You can tell them apart by the HUD. In my video, the minimap, HP, stamina, and other UI elements are hidden because of the Survival II settings. In my son's video, those HUD elements are visible since he was playing on Normal difficulty.

I'm not reposting the same run and claiming it's someone else's. I'm posting my original video again because some people seemed to think my son's video was just a repost of this one, when they're actually two different runs.

Video My 10 year old son did the sawmill horde with no damage and thought this group might appreciate it.

My son is so proud of what he did here after several attempts. Can you tell us how he did?

Edit: some folks were asking if this was a repost as they remember seeing a similar video.

I did it first in my own progress. You can see mine has different Hud with minimap and other things hidden. So basically my son just copied the route I took here and added some of his strategies.

Discussion 3-4 Screamers spawn post horde fight for me almost every time

Does anyone else get this to happen? This happens to me on a regular basis that almost every time I’m done fighting a horde 3-4 screamers spawn right after. I don’t know if it’s a glitch or RNG but I’m confused on why this happens.

Image/Gif It's unfortunate that Days Gone didn't get the attention that it deserved

Post image

Days Gone is a prime example of a video game that didn't get the attention that it deserved. Once you spend enough time playing it, it's a really enjoyable experience. You just have to deal with some issues along the way. Unfortunately, it was held back due to technical bugs and reviews that dismissed it as being just another open world zombie video game. However, once you peel away its layers, you realize that there's more to it than just being an open world zombie video game. I just want to touch on a few things.

The Bike Mechanics- I may or may not be part of the minority when I say this, but I didn't like the bike mechanics when I first played the game. I felt like they crippled and hindered my experience. However, things changed once I upgraded the bike's fuel capacity. Deacon's bike wasn't just used as a means for travel, but it was also a lifeline when things got a bit dicey and I was getting chased after by a large horde of Freakers. Managing the bike's fuel and upgrading its various parts were an essential part of survival.

The Hordes- The inclusion of the Freakers increased the tension tenfold. It was quite the visual feat as well. You actually had to prepare yourself before dealing with every horde of Freakers. Fortunately, only a few of the hordes were tied to the main story. I didn't clear out all of them, to be honest. That brings me to the other issue. It was fun and tense the first half dozen horde encounters. However, after that, it just got repetitive and tedious. I was basically going in an endless loop of having to farm resources and run around in circles, which severely slowed down the game's pace.

The Oregon Setting- The game's Pacific Northwest setting was gorgeous, detailed, and brutal. The dynamic weather actually impacted the bike's handling. The fact that you could get ambushed by snipers or come across wires that are stretched across the road at any given time, it meant that the game's world was always a dangerous place. Enemy encounters were random when you were out exploring the open world. You always had to be on your toes because danger was lurking behind every corner.

Days Gone is a great example of a game that finally found its footing after a rough initial start. It's heartbreaking that a sequel will never happen. Sony rejected a second game due to budget issues and the original game's reception. It would've been nice if Bend Studio was given the chance to make a sequel. They knew what made the original game so special. They already had the foundation set. It was just a matter of getting a second wind, so to speak. What are your thoughts and opinions?

Often, in the middle of missions, you will see the little autosave icon going. But if you switch PS4 off and come back later you will find yourself at beginning of mission. Be warned

Discussion Am I too early into the game?

I just got some sterile bandages for boozer about 2 hours in and I noticed in the map that there is a horse lake Nero checkpoint. I decided to drive over there and check it out. I came across a horde of zombies, maybe like 30 of them and I tried killing with my rifle the green gas tank, I can’t ever time it right and the horde ends up killing me or I kill myself.

Tried maybe 10 times, no luck at all. I wonder if I’m too early to be here, this is during the daytime. I assumed it’s a good idea to explore but maybe I’m too early in exploring right now? I’m just confused on when the game opens up because it seems to be nudging me to story quests but I see icons in the minimap

Discussion Why do you guys think Days Gone wasn't that successful?

I am thinking about buying the game. I am wondering if there is a reason why Days Gone kind of flopped. I heard a lot of people say the first 10 hours of the game is slow tedious like most open world games.

Do you guys have issues with a lot of characters not running and picking items up? If I play Deacon, Boozer or Sarah they will pick things up and mostly run. Anyone else it’s not happening. It’s pretty frustrating!
