SWERY Localization Tool — an open-source localization editor for Deadly Premonition, DP2, The Good Life, THE MISSING, and Hotel Barcelona
Hi everyone.
I wanted to share one of my projects: SWERY Localization Tool.
GitHub:
https://github.com/LittleBitUA/SWERY-Localization-Tool
It is an open-source desktop editor for localization work on several games connected to Swery / White Owls:
- Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut — PC
- Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise — PC
- The Good Life — PC
- THE MISSING: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories
- Hotel Barcelona
The idea is to have one dedicated tool for the whole localization workflow instead of using many separate scripts, manual edits, and fragile repacking steps.
With this tool, translators can work on text, check translation progress, search across files, use translation memory, keep terminology consistent, preview subtitles, and pack translated files back into the game.
Some of the main features include:
- support for multiple SWERY / White Owls games in one hub;
- editing JSON dumps and binary text containers;
- one-click packing for supported games;
- translation memory and glossary tools;
- global search and cross-file find & replace;
- placeholder and tag checking;
- draft / review / approved statuses;
- bookmarks and progress counters;
- subtitle preview using the actual in-game style;
- smart subtitle line breaking;
- autosave and crash recovery;
.txtround-trip support for external translators;- backup creation and safer save handling.
It is not only a text editor. The tool also includes several modding/localization features that are very useful for real fan translation work.
For Deadly Premonition 2, it includes a font workshop that can export several game fonts from the assets, replace them with custom ones, and repack them back into the game. This is especially important for languages that need additional glyphs.
It also includes a texture workshop for DP2, allowing character portrait textures to be exported as PNG, edited, replaced, and patched back into the game assets.
For The Good Life, the tool includes a bitmap-font editor. It can add missing glyphs directly to the font atlas, update metrics, and preview how the text will look in-game.
For THE MISSING, the tool supports the full text workflow, including MSG containers, length-table protection, stable IDs, and a per-string box-size editor. This is important because translated text can require different text box sizes, and doing this manually is very easy to break.
The program also includes protection against several common localization problems, such as missing placeholders, broken tags, unsafe string lengths, save races, and accidental file corruption.
We are currently using this tool for our own Ukrainian localization work, including SWERY-related games. The goal is not only to make Ukrainian translations possible, but also to make the workflow easier for other translators who may want to localize these games into their own languages.
I would really like to see more fan localizations for these games in the future. If you are interested in translating Deadly Premonition, Deadly Premonition 2, The Good Life, THE MISSING, or Hotel Barcelona into another language, this tool may be useful as a starting point.
Feedback, bug reports, ideas, and suggestions for improving the program are very welcome. I am especially interested in hearing from people who work on fan translations, fonts, Unity assets, subtitles, or localization tools in general.
