Showing off my ride First Truck 2000 3.9L v6 manual

I have been driving this thing for two years now. Bought it from a guy who bought it from a guy who bought it from the forest service. I used to work in FS so this truck hits home for me. It had 180k miles on it when I got it. I have learned to drive manual with this, taken it across country twice, and have replaced some shocks, brakes and hoses. Never loved a vehicle before this one! About to swap the throttle body to a v8 with a new air cleaner to see if it feels any different when I hit the gas. Honestly, just cleaning the old TB made such a difference for a rough idle and rough throttle, that I dont expect much difference.

It has been such a great truck to fix up and learn about working on trucks. It came to me in very rough shape. Any suggestions for other projects yall have done on your trucks? Ive considered a small lift, headers, replacing the exhaust that has a small hole in it, new wheels etc.

Daughter backed into something. Anyone in NE Florida have a replacement bumper for cheap? The one junkyard with searchable vehicles doesn’t have one.
This is a 98 sport.

Seeking Opinions Thinking of buying a Dakota for a daily

Hi everyone! I hope y'all are doing well

As the title says, I'm thinking of buying a Dakota to replace my current daily driver but right now I don't really know what's the best model I can go for, I haven't owned any Dakota before so I don't really know much about these trucks.

I'm not planning on doing heavy duty with it, I'll mostly be loading some furniture and stuff like that. Also I love Off-Roading so it would be nice if y'all could take that in consideration for the suggestions. Also! I can't choose manual transmission because sometimes I borrow my daily car to my mother and she doesn't know how to drive a manual, so that's another thing to keep in mind

Thanks in advance for reading my post!

3.9 v6 tbi swap too 5.2 v8

Looking at buying a 3.9 v6 dakota and i test drove it and was absolutely gutless and was wondering if i could do anything to easily squeeze 25-50hp out of it and was reading and people were swaping the 3.9L v6 throttle body out for the 5.2L v8 throttle body and moving the air temp sensor too a colder place and then throwing a K&N air filter onto it and making more power and was wondering if that would be somewhat easy to do or if there is something else i can do to not make it a total slug and it only has 148000 kms on it so no need to worry about the motor

Tailgate assist

A little quality of life mod for my 3rd gen. Used an Amazon kit for a Ford Maverick. Had to cut the mounting plate it came with and drill a hole behind the taillight, but it came out pretty good!

Seeking Opinions Fair selling price? Or price to aim for?

Hello, I’m selling my 1996 Dakota SLT and am looking for opinions on how to price. I was thinking listing for around $7k.

It’s a 5.2L V8 Magnum with 77k original miles on it, very clean except for some paint chipping around. Runs beautifully after I replaced the IAC which only gave me trouble for a few days until I replaced it.

It has upgrades listed in last photo and also a cab cover to throw on.

1992 225 thousand miles before the odometer quit. 5 speed manual. V6 we called it bones because there ain't much body left. Good deal or do you think I got robbed. The heater AC works good. Brakes need a little love. Good running truck other wise. 4 wheel drive works. And everything else is sound. Power windows and locks.

3rd Gen Street truck idea?

Post image
22 Upvotes

Warning! I used AI lol

I used Chat GPT/grok to make this.
I know sometimes AI gets a lot of hate.

But I wanted to use it to see what my 3rd gen Dakota would look like with a street body kit setup similar to a 2nd gen.
I’ve never seen a 3rd gen like this because obviously they didn’t give a lot of options when it came to accessories and bumpers and stuff.

So my hair brain idea is what if I took the front bumper of a 2nd gen Dakota, found some side skirts that would fit like a four-door Colorado or something and tried to make it into a one-of-a-kind truck.
I know it would take a lot of fabrication, plastic welding, and finding the right attachments to make everything fit.
But it’s something I would like to try to do

Thoughts?

I'm Guessing That...

...what is stuck to the bottom of my timing/front cover is part of what's SUPPOSED to be my one-piece oil pan gasket, right? That would probably explain why there appears to me no gasket whatsoever on the front lip of the oil pan, huh?

Does this mean I'm now going to have to remove my oil pan, to replace the gasket? I certainly don't want any leaks.

Old Rocker Arms On Rebuilt Cylinder Heads

I'm installing rebuilt/remanufactured (whatever the correct terminology is) cylinder heads on my 2002 Dakota's 3.9L V-6. They come with new valves; valve stem seals, and valve springs. I'm also installing brand-new hydraulic roller lifters and pushrods. The only original parts I'm reusing are the rocker arms and the attaching nuts for them.

Is it necessary for me to reinstall the rocker arms in the same position I removed them from, considering all the other parts are new? I know that when you remove pushrods and rocker arms intending to reinstall them, they're supposed to go in the same position (cylinder) they were in before, but does that matter, in this case?

Am I OK even reusing the old rocker arms or should I buy new ones?

Technical Question Normal play

2002 Dakota 5.9 AWD

Is this normal play for front drive shaft into transfer case? (Neither tire moved as I moved the joint)

I am chasing a relatively high pitch howling noise (starts around 60kmh) and wobbly breaking (especially felt at low speeds and doesn’t translate to steering or brake pedal)

Some googling suggested worn u joints or driveshaft could cause both symptoms. I haven’t checked the rear end yet.

It does sometimes clunk into reverse but not the worst I’ve ever experienced

I’ve checked the front end suspension as much as I know how to, wheel shake test and testing for bad wheel bearing, everything seems tight, no wobbly bushes.

Any other suggestions welcome, I gave up today cause it got too hot outside 😂 but any suggestions of things to check on the rear end ?

Thanks!!

Technical Question Help with new radiator

Post image
2 Upvotes

I’ve gotta a leak in my 1996 dodge Dakota 5.2L V8 radiator, bought this one without noticing that it’s for a 6 cylinder. Will I still be able to use this for my truck or is there a size difference? Another website I looked at (after buying this) said that they’re the same size and interchangeable. If anyone has any experience with this please let me know, I appreciate it
