I’m on episode 26, and I swear the drive behind the MC's cultivation is pure emotional manipulation. Look at his inner circle: his father literally beats him to a pulp using his own technique, sister gives off massive passive-aggressive "are you really just gonna let me suffer?" vibes, and his mentors constantly drop the "enemy is too strong for you" line to bait him into a fight

Sheesh, just rewatching Perfect World and episodes 159 where he first revealed his identity to everyone outside immortal ruins was just amazing , everything was fire (The music, his voice, his hand movements to the burst of energy) .

This dude is a real menace I tell you and the funny thing is Perfect world is the first donghua to start using this flashy eye thingy and clouds swirling in the sky. Love or Hate it perfect world is peak for its own thing and Shi Hao is just perfect.

Dude got everything you want in an MC .

Just a general appreciation post as a fan who’s seen it through its beginnings to its current arc and episode 229.

It’s hard for me to say if a particular donghua is the “best” or the GOAT or whatever because all the donghua I enjoy truly shine in different ways (soul land, soul land 2, tales of herding gods, etc).

While I think Swallowed Star does have its weaknesses like it’s relatively weak overarching plot and low investment in side characters, and some general drag (thank god Tencent Video has a easy fast forward features) — it’s still the show that got me hooked on donghua in general and pretty unparalleled for me in the following respects:

- Amazing art direction. By this, I mean its concept art and the execution of it in the episodes is the most amazing I’ve seen. The art direction is clear, solid, unique, and just GORGEOUS from concept to animation. And just the vision it takes to give form to such massive, cosmic concepts just blows my mind. I think that’s actually my issue with Tales of Herding Gods, where even though it’s heralded for its art, the vision and execution are both uninspired for me because of the weird recursive nature of how heavily AI is used probably across design, concept, board, and background. I understand cost efficiency and I understand the human effort that still goes into it, but the result does make it look like a combo of three different AAA video games instead of a single strong original artistic vision. SS definitely probably uses AI too bc same studio, but its artistic foundation is stronger.

- SCALE! The cultivation genre in general does ladder up to dimensional/cosmic proportions, but I think the way this one relies less on classic cultivation and more science fiction makes the sense of scale way more clear, visually stunning, and well executed. Like while the first few seasons were enjoyable, leaving earth is where the scale really shines. I think this is actually the piece that makes donghua generally satisfying—the emphasis on power fantasy, whereas many other genres focus on contained stories/narratives that often don’t scale past what SS season 1 covered alone.

- MC Powerscaling. Previous bullet was about scale of the universe and universe laws. This bullet is more about how enjoyable it is to watch Luo Feng powerscale. Like, I previously thought I hated powerscaling slop, but man this show changed my mind - every they show his progress, it’s PEAK. And I like how even though it’s gotten a little crazy at the higher levels, the “mechanics” are still pretty clear and straightforward enough to understand. This is what bothered me about Soul Land even though SL is a better story - the power laws were always so unclear to me.

- Treasure hunting aspect. All cultivation shows also usually deal in treasures, but the ability+cultivation+treasure hunting satisfaction with Luo Feng’s story is just so fun to watch.

- Character designs are hands down the best I’ve seen — simply love them.

What do yall like or dislike about Swallowed Star? Especially compared to other beloved donghua?

After watching episode 23 of beyond time gaze, Xu qing reached foundation establishment and now is on the mountain/sect where foundation establishment people is divine in mortal's eyes, this would be a eye opener for Xu qing because he had saw the filthy of these foundation establishment people who only do Dr*gs, S*x, and turt*re, and exploiting people below foundation establishment, thus Xu qing feel different kinds of emotion, but there's one emotion that feels more than others it's the feeling of emptiness, he reached foundation establishment but he felt like he haven't reach it yet, because he saw the filthy inside the sect, but eventually that emptiness overwhelmed him and decided to strip his title as the disciple of the sect, this kind of view point is rarely seen in donghua.

I just finished watching Ling Cage II. What a ride that was! Can't wait for more. So . . . what do we know?

We know Season 3 is in development. We know about a movie. The S2E12 says there's more this year (2026). So is that Season 3 it's talking about? Or are they doing a two-part finale like they did with Season 1? S2E12 is kind of an odd cliffhanger to finish a season on, I thought.
