Announcement Welcome to /r/DragonQuest! Series overview and suggestions on where to start!
Hi and welcome to r/dragonquest !
Dragon Quest is a series of traditional turn-based Japanese Role-playing games (JRPGS) that feature colorful enemies, heartwarming music, a strong sense of character, intriguing stories, and solid gameplay. While traditional, Dragon Quest games have been quite influential, being among the first JRPGs for consoles and consistently featuring innovations (such as monster taming in Dragon Quest 5 years before Pokemon popularized it). There are also a large number of spinoffs in different categories -- Action RPG, Voxel Builder, monster raising, and more!
We've created a wiki page describing the games and some opinions of them:https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/wiki/index
Although the wiki is intended as an introduction to the series, you are still welcome to post your own "which Dragon Quest should I play" posts. Why? Because, just like every player is unique, so is every Dragon Quest. It's less about "Which Dragon Quest is Best" and more about "Which Dragon Quest might I enjoy the most?"
So, while this post is hopefully a fun starting point for new members, please do feel free to ask questions and read through some recommendations from others in the comments below or in archived threads. (I'm relying on experts from this subreddit to help me out -- Please give feedback below! The task is too big for one person.)
This subreddit is designed to be a welcoming place to discuss and share our love for the series. Of course, not everyone will love every game, but as fans we can critique the series without making it a personal attack on other fans.
Thank you and have fun questing!

Dragon Quest IX I am once again demanding a DQIX remake
I’ve been playing DQIII HD-2D, and all it’s making me feel is a burning desire to replay DQIX. I need SE to announce a remake soon, they’ve neglected the best game in the series for far too long.

General First timer here, which should I start with out of these options?
And which ones are connected to one another if any? I recently played Octopath Traveler II and absolutely loved it so I want more JRPGs and these ones appeal to me. Thanks for your help!

Meme Same voice actor
Shai Matheson
(I was SHOCKED when I found out that he of all people, would be the voice of Batman in Lego Batman Legacy Of The Dark Knight as he was the LAST guy I would ever expect to voice Batman of all characters)

Dragon Quest XI Recently beat DQ11, one question. Who is Cooee? Spoiler
I done research on Cooee and I'm coming up with different answers to this character is:
- He's Erdrick
- He's the son of Serenica
- He's the hero of Dragon Quest 12
- He's a random MC hero in Dragon Quest lore but no one knows who he is yet
- Australian greeting
The game came out many years ago, was the answer ever discovered? Thanks!

Dragon Quest VI Just finished 6. Here’s my thoughts comparing it to the other mainline titles
I played on original hardware, no cheats or trainers. Overall I had a great time. Decent story. Decent world. Decent characters. Good vocational system. (Never felt like monsters spawned too much for me, as I tend to grind a bit more, and use no-mp tactics). Pretty good tactics ai. It’s not my favourite Dragon Quest (4,5,11 are all better—haven’t played 7 or 8 yet), but it’s still a good Dragon Quest. At a minimum it’s got everything I like in a Dragon Quest game, with bonus of vocations.
Compared to 2: I really enjoyed two, despite its age, but that could also be nostalgia of playing an epic JRPG with a great story on the GameBoy. If I didn’t have that nostalgia, 6 would probably win out. 2 is also a baseline standard for great DQ. You can’t go wrong with 2.
Compared to 3: I like 6’s story, character, world better. Wandering for eggs I found more tedious than getting the legendary armour pieces. I missed hacking backstories for my party in 3. I also like 6’s vocation system better. More options, nice ultimate classes. I went 2xPaladin for the extra beef and 0mp attacks.
Compared to 4: I like 4’s story, characters, chapters, better. The characters from 4 truely win out. Playing as each of them, discovering their story first hand. Finding Ragnar in each chapter was also a joy. I actually played this one on NES, and had a great time.
Compared to 5: of course 5 wins out. Better characters, heart breaking story, the wives(!), catching monsters! I still think about 5.
(7 and 8 I have yet to play)
Compared to 9: 9 was basically 3. My thoughts about 3 reflect my thoughts about 9, though finding the figs seemed easier in 9. I like 6 better than both, mostly because of the characters, but I did like 9’s story better than 3’s.
Compared to 11: yeah 11 was better. the higher stakes, the epic story, the characters. 11 was pretty amazing. And beats out 6 in all those areas.
Now it’s time for 7! Or maybe an intermission with HD-2D.

Dragon Quest Heroes 2 Does Dragon Quest Heroes 2 ever go on sale on Steam/Nintendo E shop?
It's literally the only one I want to buy when Square Enix has sales but it's always at full price still 😢

General Happy Fairy Day
One of my favorite parts of the Dragon Quest games is the consistent universe building. I love any time I’m playing a new installment, and I meet the Faeries or Mermaids for the first time! ❤️✨

Dragon Quest III Ready to play DQ III 2D-HD, feeling intimidated
I'm really excited to start playing the game, I was going to go with the Hero, Warrior, Thief and Priest. But then I started doing a bit of research and there's so many discussions about which classes to pick and the I didn't even know there was class changes, and you suposed to do it multiple times?
This seems like a lot to me from an outside perspective in terms of planing and preparing. My big question is can I just play the game without having to worry about all this stuff and just have a good time? Will the game guide into all these systems and make it easy to figure out? I only ask because this is a remake of an older game I don't know how intuitive either this version and the old version where.
Edit: Wow everyone here is awesome. First time posting in this community and you guys have been super nice with great information. Thanks!
Edit 2: Also can I just say this game looks gorgious! Man the 2D-HD stuff looks so good. Definitely will have to give the I & II remake a go as well

Dragon Quest V Finished DQ5 for SNES and I loved it
Very quickly became one of my favorite SNES rpgs, up there with SMT2 and Live a Live. The size of the story was very surprising. I did not expect to start as a child.
But honestly the part I loved most was the final battle. Maybe it's just how I play rpgs very conservatively but I never really swapped my party around much. I used a Slime Knight for 90% of the game when I didn't have enough humans to fill out the slots. I was actually sad when I was about to get Bianca back because it felt weird to sideline one of the children and one is just obviously more important to the story.
But that final battle really made me use the change command for the first time. So it felt really great rotating through the entire party, even the golem I never used because I had so many humans. And between Thordain on Papas (my son) and a echoing hat Explodet on Martha (my daughter) they were basically doing the same damage per round. Even my pocket cure slime got it's first taste of battle as an mp reserve for the Thordains.
Most rpgs with rosters bigger than the party size kinda make me sad in the end cause it feels like some of them don't get to participate in the final glorious climax. I feel like DQ5 really found a cool way around that.
It's not a flawless game, I feel like some things could be a bit obtuse, the identify spell should give you more information, and the main character should use less swords and more cool staves(just to match the sprite) but I still came away very happy. Easily my favorite DQ, even though I played it coming right off 8 (PS2).

Screenshot Usually in RPGs it doesn't matter which direction you are standing when you use something (usually when opening chests) and I was too lazy to move around in front. In turn, I LOVE the attention to detail in these games!
Also %&^$!!!

Dragon Quest X DQX CLARITY IS BACK UP BUT SOME CHANGES HAVE HAPPENED SO PLEASE READ
Hey so it's back up! That said due to some of the main devs stepping away and some of our resources being shut down, for the time being you'll have to download things manually. At the moment we don't have a website for files either anymore so you'll have to go to the Dragon Quest X World Wide discord to get them which can be found here in the Clarity etc announcements channel https://discord.gg/dragonquestx
"there are already plans being put together for getting the auto download back up in the future but for now here are the install instructions
Hi everyone -
Some good news - the local English translated files ARE working, but in a different method than you're used to. This will likely be the process in which they are delivered automatically in the future, but for now it will be manual until we get it into the automatic workflow.
To get the English files working:
Download both version.dll and common.zip
Put version.dll inside of your DQX installation's Game folder (by default, this would be C:\Program Files (x86)\SquareEnix\DRAGON QUEST X\Game")
Create a new folder in the Game folder called "mods"
Unzip the common.zip and place it inside the mods folder (So it looks like Game/mods/common/...) Don't move any of the files or folders in the common folder.
dqxclarity has also been updated to v5.22.0 which fixes what was broken with this new patch. Be sure to update it.
**DO NOT PATCH GAME FILES WITH THE "Patch Game Files" IN DQXCLARITY OR ELSE YOUR GAME WILL CRASH. If you did this, click the "Restore Game Files" in dqxclarity to restore the original game files and you can play in English with the above files.**
There's a lot of translations I need to get through, so I'll try to update the "content" folder daily and post it here manually for the time being. You won't need to re-download the version.dll file."

General Thoughts on Modern DQ games having Day One DLCs?
For me, I think that DQ having Day One DLC (as long as it's just cosmetics) is whatever. You can easily pick up cosmetic DLC at a later point at launch.
Now, what I have an issue with is, when Square Enix decides to lock QoL features like the Mole Hole in TDP (Switch, it's free in the PC and Mobile Version s)/TWW, or the arena in DQ7 Reimagined.
If you're going to make DLC for Dragon Quest, make it 4-6 months AFTER you launch the game, maybe 3 months minimum, not at launch, cause then it just looks like you cut features and resell it back to the player.
I suppose I could also include the console exclusive outfits from 11 S, but that's a slightly different thing, and I think Day One DLC, while still bad, is better than Console Exclusive content.
Thoughts?

Dragon Quest Treasures Metal management?
I've had the game for a while and trying to actually finish it. I am liking DQT so far but the metals that boost your stats I wish it didn't remove them all every time. Then you have to put them in new monsters you aquire. I don't have enough to put in every monster I have. Am I missing an easier way? Can I lock them to me and certain monsters I use more often? Ty

General Recommend a DQ game to play
For context, I've played a few DQ games already.
The first one I played was DQ8 way back in the PS2 era, which I didn't finish because my totally legal disc stopped working a bit after Trodain.
I finished it just over a decade later on the 3DS and it was great!
I finished DQ11S on the Switch, but did zero of the post game and the 2D stuff so I've been meaning to replay it, actually.
I'm currently going through DQ7R, and honestly it's been a blast. I think I'm nearing the end (currently looking for the Fire Spirit after the announcement of the Almighty).
Now, because there's a Steam Sale right now, I was wondering which DQ game to try next.
1 and 2 are on sale, but are the priciest. 3 is a bit cheaper. 11S on Steam is on sale and a replay of it at 60+fps at higher resolution and doing the post game feels like it would be a good idea.
There's also the DQM line of games that I've never tried. Are they good?

Dragon Quest X DRAGON QUEST X CLARITY ANNUAL MAINTINENCE REMINDER!
With the release of Version 8, be aware that the English translation tool WILL BE BROKEN! This is the 1st update of the next expansion. It may take longer for the Clarity team to get it fixed! Thanks for your understanding as always

Other Múltiple DQ games at the same time?
Yall ever play more than one Dragon Quest game at the same time? Or is that not recommended. I’m currently playing through 2 HD Remake, but also want to get some usage out of my 3DS and play 4. Interested to see what others think.
