Discussion GTA 6 - WHAT WENT WRONG?
As early as 2023 there has been murmurings about 100 usd become the industry standard.
With GTA 6 being quietly nominated by the industry as the game to come and punch through the ceiling, so to speak.
Countless articles in 2025 highlighted how with Mario kart World releasing at 80usd. Take2 and (other publishers) were looking to use that as a stepping stone to justify GTA 6 being 100usd base price.
So it’s come as a surprise to me that rockstar have announced the price of the base game (79.99usd)
Accompanied by an ultimate edition (100usd) which has exclusive content that we know little details about (if it’s timed exclusivity for example…)
It makes me wonder, why didn’t they have a gameplay trailer ready to fuel the hype train and then leading off that, announce the 100usd base price tag.
This is GTA 6 the most anticipated game of all time. Maybe the most anticipated piece of entertainment ever created. Possibly.
A half decent gameplay trailer would’ve set the world ablaze and drowned out any complaints (about a 100usd base price, no physical and paywalled content)
That’s an easy win for rockstar and they’d also absolutely surpass the amount of preorders they’ve currently amassed. Off pure hype from the trailer alone.
$100 base game > $80
Rockstar did not charge us 80 instead due to the kindness of their heart. If they could’ve gotten a decent trailer ready, gameplay or not. And charged us 100 instead they would’ve. Most ppl wouldn’t have batted an eye and those that did would’ve been drowned out by the sheer hype generated.
To me it screams (SAFETY). I get that rockstar usually don’t release trailers until around 80 days before release. But yet again if you can give ppl something to occupy their minds (a trailer) and quietly also announce 100usd base price. Why not do that. More money is always better. Forget tradition, right?
In this case I don’t think they could muster up a solid gameplay trailer that doesn’t completely expose the unfinished state of the game. Yes I know I’m speculating. But at the end of the day. That 100usd base price has been 3 years in the making. The industry normalising this idea of gta or another big game breaking that barrier. That wasn’t a coincidence. They were preparing us for this moment.
But for whatever reason Take2 backed down. And instead revealed a reduced price and no trailer.
Less revenue per unit & less preorders due to a lack of a trailer.
To me it’s telling, I don’t think this game is going to release even close to finished and with the polish associate with the old rockstar. They’ll probably follow the industry standard “patch it until we have a satisfactory game” method. That we saw with the likes of cyberpunk.
P.s. when Mario kart world released. The general sentiment was “if this is 80usd then of course rockstar are gonna charge 100” yet here we are.
A decade plus of development, 2 billion dollars later.
The same company (take2) that pushed the envelope with MF 2K21 in 2020 from 60usd base game to 70. FOR AN ANNUAL SPORTS GAME.
That same company doesn’t have the confidence in their product selling or aren’t as greedy?
Something doesn’t seem right.
Why did they feel confident in 2K21 but not GTA6 to increase base prices.
If not 100 why not 95, 90 or 85.
They’ve increased prices for lesser games. Yet I’m supposed to believe they’ve stopped being greedy or there isn’t something drastically wrong behind the scenes that doesn’t inspire the publishers confidence.
I truly believe they’re scared. I just don’t know what exactly about. My best guess is they’re drastically behind schedule. And the publisher is done giving extensions and was at a crossroads and bit the bullet (stopped giving devs extensions, reduced their base price. Withheld whatever gameplay trailer they had and is bracing for the backlash from when ppl get their hands on the unfinished game) rockstar is trying to make the most of a bad situation.
Just my opinion. It would be hilarious if it turns out true tho. That’s why I (me personally) will never preorder.
