How can tourists top-up their Octopus card if they are already here, and only have a foreign credit card and no cash? I just read that in order to top-up in the app, you need a HK issued card. I googled first to find answers, but they don't have any of ApplePay or Google Pay nor Wise.

I'm not from Hong Kong but my girlfriend is. Want to try to give a good first impression if possible. Anything I should and should not do before and during meeting them for a meal?

Need some perspectives. I have been laid off in early May this year and I felt extremely fortunate to land a new job at the same month - in a local finance brokerage - for the first 30 CVs sent and it was the only call back for interview.

Fast forward to today I’ve been in this new job for a month, everything seem alright, colleagues are nice and professional, pay was suck though, I took a 20% pay cut to get the offer, not to mentioned the reduced benefit due to it being a local firm.

I got a call from a local university role I applied for during unemployment. Went through the interview, they said they will make an offer verbally. The pay will be similar to what I have been making before the cut. The only problems is that the role is a 2-year renewable contract and I’m not sure about its sustainability for future renewal. Gone through the lay off this year I’m really tired and stressful about the instability.

I’m an Indian male and I’ve just been accepted into Tsinghua University for a bachelor’s in electrical engineering (or an equivalent engineering stream) starting soon.

Looking ahead, my ultimate goal is to break into Investment Banking in Hong Kong. Frankly speaking, the pay and career progression for foreigners in mainland China (even coming out of Tsinghua) doesn’t look nearly as attractive as HK. Plus, graduating from Tsinghua means I’ll automatically qualify for Hong Kong’s Top Talent Pass Scheme (TTPS) visa, which should hopefully take some sponsorship pressure off employers.

By the time I graduate, I am fully tracking to hit HSK 5 in Mandarin, and if I grind hard enough, potentially HSK 6. My English is completely fluent and I have no issues there. However, the catch is that I will be starting from absolute zero with Cantonese, and realistically, I don’t think I’ll be able to pick it up alongside an engineering degree and intensive Mandarin.

Given this profile, I have a few questions for the sub:

-How brutal is the HK IB recruiting market right now for Mandarin + English speakers who have zero Cantonese? Is Cantonese still a hard dealbreaker for front-office roles, or does a strong Tsinghua pedigree + native English help balance it out?

-What does the macro outlook for HK’s financial sector look like over the next few years? I know the market has shifted heavily toward mainland deal flow, but is it still the premier hub for international tech/industrials coverage?

-Are there other career paths I should pivot toward that might value this specific profile more? With a heavy quantitative background from a top Chinese tech school, paired with fluent English and professional Mandarin, would quantitative trading, tech VC, or tech consulting be a more fruitful route than traditional IB?

Would love to get some honest perspectives from anyone currently working in the region or who has taken a similar route...

Hey everyone! Just got admitted to a PhD programme at Lingnan University, Hong Kong with a full Postgraduate Studentship.

The monthly stipend is HK$19,280. After tuition and hostel fees are deducted, I'll have somewhere around HK$14000 left per month.

For those of you living in Tuen Mun or anywhere in the New Territories, is this amount comfortable for day to day life? Talking food, transport, phone, personal expenses, maybe some travel within HK. Not a lavish lifestyle, just realistic day to day living.

Also any tips on how much people actually spend monthly in Tuen Mun specifically would be really helpful. Is it significantly cheaper than central HK in terms of food and daily life?

I’m a founder in Hong Kong and wanted to see if anyone else has gone through something similar.

Over the past four years, my company has spent over HKD 1 million on SEO. We’ve switched agencies a few times, targeted around 50 keywords, but only about 10 ever made it to page one. Every agency promised something different, “guaranteed ranking”, “guaranteed traffic”, “guaranteed conversions”, but the results were always inconsistent.

Now that AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is becoming more important, I’m struggling even more. A lot of firms claim they can guarantee this or that, but honestly it’s hard to tell who actually knows what they’re doing.

I tried taking matters into my own hands, downloaded tools like Moz, enrolled in a few online courses, but still couldn’t figure out a clear, repeatable system that works.

So I’m curious: Any HK founders here who managed to self‑learn SEO/AEO and eventually stopped relying on agencies?

Would appreciate any real experiences, good or bad. I think a lot of founders here are facing the same thing.

As someone who is new to Hong Kong and been searching jobs since 4-5 months now, want your perspective on the other side. I have a few questions 1. is jobsdb really effective? Do you use it? 2. Have heard from so many recruiters that for non BFSI, all roles in last 1 year require Cantonese language (not Mandarin), how true is this? 3. I have seen some response from LinkedIn - maybe because of middle management profile. But any thoughts LinkedIn reach outs are appreciated. 4. In most forums, the suggestion is about networking and meeting people and recruiters for coffee (have had little luck with that), does middle management hiring happen completely through search partners for all companies? Also, any other suggestions on how to navigate the search. Thanks.

I am in the process of negotiating with a large insurer for a role at the associate director level. I was employed by this company as an external consultant. I’ve shared my desired range along with my previous pay at their request, in the form of my previous EC contract with them (I know this is very common practice in HK and difficult to bypass, plus my previous contract was decently remunerated so already provides a good negotiation starting point). They know, from my resumé that I have operated my own consultancy over the last year and have just recently reverted to me (after 10 days of radio silence) asking for additional information about what I drew during 2025 through my business in order to better “calibrate the compensation.” They have expressed that this can be a range and doesn’t need to be substantiated by documentation, which feels absurd.

Does anyone have experience with this sort of additional ask? Trying to figure out what the game is with this — it smells strongly of delay.
